Redding will need about six weeks to recover from the operation, the Nationals said.Analysis: Redding went 10-11 with a 4.95 ERA in 33 starts last year. He was the only Nationals pitcher to win at least 10 games. The journeyman is expected to have a rotation spot waiting for him again, but he is nothing more than an NL-only option on Draft Day. He just doesn't have much upside, especially on the lowly Nationals.Profile Dodgers show interest in PettitteAndy Pettitte, SP NYYNews: According to the New York Post, the Dodgers have an expressed interest in free agent SP Andy Pettitte. "Some," GM Ned Colletti wrote in an e-mail.Analysis: Pettitte has expressed a desire to stay with the Yankees, but he's clearly willing to listen to other offers. The 36-year-old left-hander, who returned to the Yankees before the 2007 season, was 2-7 with a 6.23 ERA in his final 11 starts, and he missed his last turn because of a sore pitching shoulder. At age 36, his body might have reached a point where it can't hold up for a full season, so think of him as no better than a No. 5 or 6 Fantasy SP if he returns next season.Profile Mets still front runner for K-RodFrancisco Rodriguez, RP ANANews: Closer Francisco Rodriguez's agent won't start detailed discussions with teams until the winter meetings open in Las Vegas on Dec. 8. Paul Kinzer, who represents the free-agent closer, doesn't expect the marketplace to get busy for another 10 days. "I'll probably see the Mets at the winter meetings. I don't have anything else planned," he said Wednesday.Analysis: K-Rod will be the No. 1 closer off the board in Fantasy regardless of where he goes, because in all likelihood, a top contender will spend money on him. He is worth considering as high as the second round on Draft Day.Profile Rangers grant RP Loe his releaseKameron Loe, SP TEXNews: The Rangers put RP Kameron Loe on unconditional release waivers Wednesday, freeing him to sign with the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks of Japan's Pacific League. He would prefer to start, though, and will likely get that opportunity in Japan.Analysis: Loe wasn't a disaster as a major-league reliever, but he didn't do enough statistically to have any Fantasy appeal. He obviously won't have any appeal if he goes to Japan.Profile Phils hopeful for quick Utley returnChase Utley, 2B PHINews: Phillies second baseman Chase Utley has had arthroscopic hip surgery and is expected to need four to six months to recover. The three-time All Star had surgery Monday to trim the labrum and a bony lesion in his right hip at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, team officials said Tuesday. Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said last week he expected Utley to be ready at or shortly after the start of the 2009 regular season. Spring training begins Feb. 14. Philadelphia's first regular-season game is April 5.Analysis: Despite feeling symptoms for much of the year, Utley hit .292 and led all second basemen with 33 home runs and 104 RBI as the Phillies won the National League East for the second consecutive year. In the playoffs, he hit three home runs with nine RBI the help the Phillies win their second World Series in team history and first since 1980. Utley is still the No. 1 second baseman, but this news makes it difficult to pick him early in Round 1 right now. Knowing Utley's dirtball style, he will try to be ready for the start of the season but that might be a long shot at this point.Profile Giants give Phelps spring inviteJosh Phelps, 1B SFNews: The Giants signed first baseman/outfielder Josh Phelps to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.Analysis: Phelps has pop in his bat, but he is nothing more than a low-end reserve for the deepest of NL-only leagues at this point. He could make the Giants roster, perhaps even get some starts, and prove useful in those real deep formats. He is still a long shot to make the team.Profile Red Sox still interested in VaritekJason Varitek, C BOSNews: The Red Sox have expressed an interest in bringing back captain Jason Varitek but have not made a contract offer, the catcher's agent said Tuesday. "We've had no financial discussions with the team as of yet regarding Jason," agent Scott Boras said. "We met briefly when the club expressed interest in bringing Jason back. And we told them we were interested in looking into it. It was something we agreed to discuss in the future. So I'm sure sometime after Thanksgiving we'll sit down and talk about it." Varitek filed for free agency after 11 years with the Red Sox in which he grew particularly valuable for his defense and handling of the pitching staff. Boston GM Theo Epstein did not immediately return an e-mail seeking comment.Analysis: Varitek's offensive numbers dropped this season, when he batted .220 with 13 homers and 43 RBI in the final season of a four-year, $40 million contract he signed in 2004 after the Red Sox won their first World Series title in 86 years. Until this year Crosby had been plagued by injury and hadn't been the same since his 2004 Rookie of the Year season.Analysis: Crosby's years of disappointment and injury woes make him nothing more than an AL-only Fantasy option at this point in his career. You have to be resigned to the fact he will never reach his once vast potential.Profile Burriss to be blocked by FA?Emmanuel Burriss, SS SFNews: Shortstops Rafael Furcal and Edgar Renteria are among the free agents the Giants are targeting as possible replacements for 11-time Gold Glover Omar Vizquel. Last month, Detroit declined its $11 million option for Renteria and gave him a $3 million buyout. Giants GM Brian Sabean said just after the 2008 season ended there was "zero" chance the club would re-sign the 41-year-old Vizquel despite his popularity, positive clubhouse influence and ever-reliable defense even for his age and after undergoing left knee surgery during spring training. Committed to developing its young player, San Francisco had been grooming speedy rookie Emmanuel Burriss as Vizquel's successor, but adding a veteran such as Furcal or Renteria would allow Burriss additional time to grow into the position.Analysis: Burriss is a slap-hitting, base-stealing shortstop with some long-term potential. He can still play some defense, but he won't do anything at the plate for a Fantasy owner. San Francisco's punchless offense would be death to his mixed league Fantasy value, though.Profile Furcal among Giants' targetsRafael Furcal, SS LANews: Shortstops Rafael Furcal and Edgar Renteria are among the free agents the Giants are targeting as possible replacements for 11-time Gold Glover Omar Vizquel. Across San Francisco Bay, the Oakland Athletics also are courting Furcal. Furcal's agent, Paul Kinzer, said Monday the Giants and A's are still serious contenders to sign Furcal. "Yes, they are," Kinzer said in a telephone interview. "Right now we still have four teams we're talking to." Kinzer also said a report in the El Caribe newspaper in Furcal's native Dominican Republic that Oakland had made Furcal an offer for $48 million over four years "wasn't true" and added he had not been in contact with the Mets about Furcal's services.Analysis: The 31-year-old Furcal has played the past three seasons with the Dodgers, so he is familiar with the NL West. That's after he spent his first six major league seasons with the Atlanta Braves. He was limited to 36 games last season and activated from the 60-day disabled list during the final week after being sidelined since May 6 with back problems. He hit .357 with five home runs and 16 RBI. Furcal is getting up in years, but he can be a great injury-risk sleeper on Draft Day, especially in Rotisserie leagues and other formats that value the stolen base.Profile Brewers give Bourgeois minor dealJason Bourgeois, 2B MILNews: The Brewers signed second baseman Jason Bourgeois to a minor league contract.Analysis: Bourgeois is nothing more than organizational depth at this point in his career.
