Filed under: Equipment, Roller | No Comments » No Skating For Michael Gilday Posted on December 4, 2008 by Peter Doucet Michael Gilday, member of Canada’s short track speed skating team, shared the following on his blog; No skating for me-Today I was able to do some exerices in order to help activate some of my deep core muscles that aren’t working and putting the extra strain on my back. But this still doesn’t change the fact that I won’t skate this weekend. Although a World Cup is important, it isn’t as important as say World Championships Trials, which are in 5 weeks. Filed under: Blogs, Injuries, International, Race Series, Short Track, Skaters, World Cup | No Comments » Hyper Thread- Just Some Ideas… Posted on December 4, 2008 by Peter Doucet The thread Just some ideas…, started by letmecuturegrass, has seen a flurry of activity and responses-Since numbers arent as high as they used to be, why are we having 3 different meets at the same time? I think there should be bids to see who gets to have their meet on a certain date. If there is more than one rink bidding for the meet, i think the fair thing to do is trade off years. If each meet has 130 skaters in different locations, then i would predict you would see about 300 skaters in a single location. This makes for better competition and more excitement all the way around. It also allows the vendors to show up and be confident in the numbers, moreover, if there are 3 different meets, a vender surely cannot be present at all 3… at least not as professionally as they would prefer. Now with this system you can adequately do a series. For example, there are 4 or 5 major EXCLUSIVE meets throughout the year, so you can expect the general skating population to be present for all of them. If USARS agrees to award free entry to nationals for the winner in each division of the series or a free card for the next year, among other prizes and purses from vendors and entries, this would also draw the numbers. Since we are hitting speeds we havent hit and the equipment is evolving, why are we still skating on the same track that they used on quads? You have to figure that the faster we go, the less time there is to complete a pass on the straight away and actually make it in clean without falling down. Not to mention, if someone is really good at jamming, you really dont have a whole lot of options. however, on an oval track, the possibilities are virtually limitless. You can pass just about anywhere you want to. Many floors around the country are generally smaller in size, more often lacking the preffered width. This being said, it makes sense to evolve to a track that caters to this dilemma. The NIRA track is a great start, and im not sure its quite perfect, but it could be altered slightly to make for safer, more exciting racing. Additional ideas are openly welcome, but if you disagree, please provide, in logical detail, why. These are made up from: Men - 182 individual track, 185 individual road, 20 track relays, 11 road relays, 16 marathonsWomen - 161 individual track, 151 individual road, 20 track relays, 11 road relays, 16 marathons….amazing to think that if Hedrick was a nation he would be 4th in the overall rankings by country since championships began…over 70 years ago!!From 1937 until 1968 the European Championships and World Championships (for men) were held in conjunction with one another, so for example when Danny Kelly won the 1000m knockout in Nantes in 1963 he was crowned World AND European Champion. What is interesting is that in 1966 the combined World and European Championships were held outside of Europe for the one and only time - in Mar del Plata, Argentina. This event was held for men only. CONSIDER This…-The answer to all these questions is yes, however, it is not limited to just these aspects, and i think a lot of times we tend to forget this. Possibly the most important quality of a superior coach is humility. Read Theory & Test and Speedskater Thanksgiving- Photo from Andrew LoveMike is pressing his upper body into the push, but also keeping it square with the turn. Hard to do. I wonder how many Thanksgivings with family Mike has skipped, and will skip during his tenure with the National team, to skate with such precision? Want to beat him someday? It’s easy: Be amazingly talented, twine years of excellent coaching together with willpower to suffer, and then spend a lifetime sacrificing more than Mike has. So simple, and so hard.
