South Africa beat England in the final of the Dubai Sevens and are set up well for the next leg in George, South Africa. Samoa, with a highly experienced squad, faltered against Fiji in the quarters, whilst NZ and Fiji lost out to the two finalists England and South Africa in the semis. In the big game, before a crowd of 81,180, New Zealand humbled Martin Johnson's England 32-6, taking out the "grand slam" of beating Scotland, Ireland, Wales and England, in a great fashion with no tries scored against them during the tour. Cup Quarter finals New Zealand - Kenya South Africa - Australia Samoa - Fiji England - Argentina The Dubai tournament is being played for the first time at 'The Sevens', a brand new stadium purpose-built for next year's Rugby World Cup Sevens for both men and women and subsequent Dubai events. Editor - November 29th 2008 PIs in action worldwide Members of Pacific Islanders team return to their respective formations this weekend now that the November Internationals have finished - while England meet the unbeaten All Blacks on their present tour and Robbie Dean's Wallabies confront the Welsh in Cardiff. The IRB World Series Sevens 08/09 season has started, the IRB Sevens World Cup being staged in Dubai next March will showcase Pacific Islanders in action. Samoan DJ Forbes, Captain of the New Zealand Sevens team has been named the IRB Sevens player of the year award. The starting All Black fifteen, playing for the inaugural Sir Edmund Hillary trophy - consists of no less than eight Pacific Islanders with two more in the reserves, eight of these are Samoans which clearly shows the problems Manu Samoa face in keeping player depth. Editor - November 23rd 2008 (NZ time) Pacific Islanders beat Italy 25-17 The Pacific Islanders won over Italy in a full on , bruising encounter that epitomised the very essence of the physicality of the game that is fifteen man international Rugby. The initial part of the first half saw the Italians explore the width of the field and try to put their seal on the match in the forwards through scrums, lineouts and drives. But it was the PI team that actually shone - reduced to 14 men from Seremaia Bai being sin binned for 10 minutes for a high tackle on Mirco Bergamasco - the PIs produced some great penetration with continual forward pick up and go drives that did not let up and by half time the Italians also had a player (Kaine Robinson) in the bin and were staring at a scoreline that spelled out PIs - three tries Italy 1 try. By match end Bai showed what a great kicker he is with 10 points, Delasau had scored two tries - Ratuvou one and there could have been more but for the cruel bounce of the ball. The forwards were on their game as were the backs and the defence held, and held well and often. The hunting pack of the loose forward trio was led clinically and majestically by the human dynamo PI captain Nili Latu - from start to finish. Just imagine what could have been the results if the Pacific Islanders were given more game time? Two warm up matches were played in 2004, none in 2006 and none in 2008. Lets get this team back up and running - often! Give them 2 warm up matches - set them against the best in the world and let that world see Rugby played in the international setting that these smiling, humble, respectful and brillant players bring with them whenever they tour, whenever they visit a School, whenever they play on the Rugby field. They are the Pacific Islanders, they may come from Fiji, Samoa and Tonga, but they represent the entire Pacific Islands and they all started with a dream on a marked out field of sand, rock or dirt and they made it to the very best of stadia in the world. Keep an eye out for the forthcoming book on the Pacific Islanders! Editor - November 22nd 2008 The match with Italy will see a strengthened combination of Pacific Islanders, two games under their belt and a great understanding of whom they are up against - an Italian team that can scrum anyone off the park and a team that will rely on kicking. The Italians will meet a ready Pacific Islanders team full of hardened forwards and punishing backs. The loose forwards led by Captain Nili Latu will be on the hunt continually and will contest every ball - the Italians, true to their game should kick for touch for lineouts along with some high testing punts for the fullback to gather and perhaps the odd centering kick to the wings a la Ron Jarden. Expect a hunting pack of loose forwards, a strong, hard, tight five and a major attacking backline from the PI team which plays in a few hours - this ladies and gentlemen - is rugby at its finest - two teams on the backfoot with talent to burn wanting to win with every fibre of their being twitching to the very max. Gavin Williams Samoa PRESS RELEASE 19 November 2008 Napolioni Nalaga banned for three matchesIn a blow to the Sports Hydrant Pacific Islanders, flying winger Napolioni Nalaga has received a three week ban for a red card given to him last Saturday. Nalaga was given his marching orders in the 18th minute against France – a contentious decision that consigned the Pacific Islanders to another defeat. Nalaga was contrite following his dismissal – he even ventured close to the French dressing room where he apologised to the French number 9 Jean-Baptiste Elissade for the accident. PI head coach Quddus Fielea was understandably upset but also philosophical about the three week suspension: “It was always going to be hard to overturn the red card especially given the media outcry over the last few days. I think this was about the best we could have done." Manager Sitiveni Rabuka, who travelled to the hearing in Paris to support Nalaga, paid tribute to Nalaga’s integrity and also praised the team that defended the charges: “Napolioni is a wonderful young man, a very proud Pacific Islander and very contrite about what happened. The committee agreed there was no malice and that the collision was essentially an unfortunate accident. The team defending him performed admirably – special thanks should be reserved for Marcus Agnew, Dave Arthur and Bob Tuckey, who between them formulated an excellent case that was commented on by the hearing committee. “We must now move on and focus our efforts on the task at hand. We are confident of victory over Italy on Saturday afternoon." The Sports Hydrant Pacific Islanders play Italy on Saturday 22 November (Italian time) in the picturesque town of Regio Emillio. PRESS RELEASE - 18 November 2008 Sports Hydrant Pacific Islanders determined to atone in ItalyThe Sports Hydrant Pacific islanders have moved base to Italy to prepare for Saturday’s Test. Despite suffering another defeat, everybody connected with the squad is upbeat and has vowed to channel their wholehearted efforts into defeating Italy and recording a first victory for the Pacific Islanders. Head coach Quddus Fielea was philosophical following the 42-17 defeat against France: “It was only towards the end of the game that exhaustion got the better of us and we let in a couple of tries . The sending off of Nalaga obviously effected the game immensely however the boys played well in large patches." Forwards coach Peter Fatialofa was equally upbeat: “We have played some great rugby but we have not been finishing it off. We had our chances but didn’t take them. There is absolutely no reason we cannot beat Italy on Saturday. However, this is Test match rugby and it will be a stern test, all the more so as Italy have also lost their two games this series." Marc Lievremont, the French coach, complimented the PIs on their performance: “The Pacific Islanders have really great players and it is great to see them here. The try was a great reward for them and the great game they offered”. In other news, Napolioni Nalaga will appear before a specially convened IRB disciplinary panel on Tuesday. Census Johnston has returned to New Zealand for personal reasons, and will be replaced in due course. The Sports Hydrant Pacific Islanders play Italy on Saturday 22 November (Italian time) in the picturesque town of Regio Emillio. It is the first time a rugby union international has been played at the ground. Editorial - 16th November 2008 Boomer game changes shape At 18 minutes into the match, the Pacific Islanders were leading , playing with both tactical appreciation and passion, and carving their way into the opposition in what looked like a boomer test match when the shape of the game changed completely. PI right wing Napolioni Nalaga was sent off for a high and late tackle - reducing the PI team to play over an hour of rugby with only 14 men. Napolioni was the top try scorer in France last year - and his sending off was crucial to the game. It meant that not only was the attacking ability greatly reduced, but the players would now have to play that much harder - almost like playing up a hillside - covering the all important and now empty right flank to which the French would naturally concentrate on. The end result is now well known, but let us pause here for a moment to digest what actually happened: Napolioni was chasing an attacking PI chip kick which was kicked back "on the full" by the French half back Jean-Baptiste Elissalde - who then promptly collided with the larger committed PI winger - known for his blistering speed. Replays show that this action was both unintended and unusual - kicking a ball "on the full" when sprinting opposition is chasing that very ball is fraught with danger for both players. One French try was made when clearly there was obstruction and Epi Taione made good for his huge workload by scoring with just under 3 minutes on the clock. The end result was similar to the match with England, being 5 tries to 1 with a scoreline of 42 -17. However, the difference here was the red card which doomed the visitors to an hour of trojan like efforts of relentless tackling and covering amongst moments of "never say die" attack and defend, attack and defend. History has already recorded the score which will stand forever more, but lets all give thought to the momentous decision of a red carding based on what looked like a serious injury ( Jean-Baptiste is okay), amidst demands by a boisterous crowd, when clearly the collision was unintentional. Perhaps a yellow card was more appropriate given the circumstances mentioned, it would go some way in appeasing the home crowd and would have given the French 10 mins to play 14 men. With the benefit of slow motion replays we can see that there was no malice aforethought or "mens rea" behind the actions of the speedy PI winger. There are too many controversial game changing decisions in the anals of Pacific Rugby as it is without adding any more. These are young men playing a game they love amongst opponents they respect and share lifetime friendships with. Lets give the Pacific Islanders two warm up games before each tour and long live Rugby! The phrase "O for awesome!" was made famous by Samoan boxer David Tua. This is exactly what comes to mind when we look further into the possiblities of the upcoming match with France. Les Tricolors have maintained their winning backline from last week - going for continuity and counting on their structured back play to win the contest amongst the backs, they believe the PI team will be too" loose" in the backline and have not had enough time together to deliver the type of continual hammer blows that will break through Les Bleus. They know that the PI team have a heavy pack totally unintimidated and champing at the bit to get stuck in. Enter the true Pacific Islanders backline - the top try scorer in France last year has now joined the team - winger Napolioni Nalaga. The present top scorer is the other PI wing Vilimoni Delasau. Up to eight of the team play in France, and will know exactly how to match Les Coqs on Sat. 10 changes have been made to the team since last week - these boys do not want to go home empty handed - everything will rest on this game and the manner in which it will be played - expect a hard, hard, match with some exciting finishes by the entire PI team.. He has acknowledged that the PI team has a "tough and experienced" pack and has made changes to the two French props and number eight from the team that beat Argentina, whilst keeping the same backs, whom he says will be looking for opportunities to attack. France: Maxime Medard, Cedric Heymans, Yannick Jauzion, Benoit Baby, Julien Malzieu, David Skrela, Jean-Baptiste Elissalde; Lionel Faure, Dimitri Szarzewski, Nicolas Mas, Romain Millo-Chluski, Lionel Nallet, Thierry Dusautoir, Imanol Harinordoquy, Fulgence Ouedraogo. News - 12th November 2008 Napolioni Nalaga joins squad Fijian speed merchant Napolioni Nalaga has come into to squad to fill in for Sireli Bobo who is unavailable. Also entering camp is number eight Sisa Koyamaibole who has been released from his club. Editor - 11th November 2008 Next up, the Pacific Islanders play the French. The Pacific Islanders are now in France and getting ready for the test on Saturday. The French are known for their forward dominated style of Rugby and their backs have been the undoing of many an international team as we all know and appreciate. The "gritty" performance shown by the team in light of the lack of preparation time when playing England has given the players valuable game time together and now that they have a test match under their belt they will all be the better for it and are all looking forward to playing the French. The test with England did show some good points in the forwards, and the backs will now have a better understanding of each other - this means that the Pacific Islanders can unleash the type of Rugby that the PI teams are known for - fast, attacking backs with flair, electrifying the crowds with their pace and love of the game, heralded by hard tackling loose forwards and grunty movers of the ball in the tight five. Sacre Bleu!....Hold on to your hats.....this is going to be a good one! PRESS RELEASE - 12 Nov Press release November 12. 2008 Training hard at Montebelliard Sports Hydrant Pacific Islanders training well ahead of France clash. The Sports Hydrant Pacific Islanders are currently happily located in the exquisite surroundings of Belfort in Eastern France. They arrived on Sunday and since then have undertaken a range of on and off field training sessions including video analysis of Saturday’s Test. In front of around 250 spectators and on a clear and bright afternoon, the boys went through a light session on the first day. According to backs coach Glen Ella: “The ball handling and application was excellent and the squad has recovered well from the game on the weekend”. On Tuesday the conditions changed to wet and windy but nevertheless the squad trained well. Everything paused at 11am when in a touching scene the squad observed the 90th Anniversary of Armistice Day. Team Manager Sitiveni Rabuka joined other dignitaries at a ceremony in Montbelliard to commemorate the anniversary in more formal circumstances. The Pacific Islanders were afforded great respect by their hosts and this was returned as they laid a wreath to honour those fallen. In squad news Finau Maka has been ruled out of the French Test with a badly sprained ankle. Kele Leaware had an x ray on an injured hand but no break was found and Hale T Pole had a scan after a head knock. Once again no problems were found and they are both available for selection. A few other players are carrying the bruises from an uncompromising encounter with the English but none is serious enough to prevent them being available. Competition for places will be very strong before the team is announced at a civic ceremony to welcome the Sports Hydrant Pacific Islanders to the region tomorrow at 12pm (French time). The Sports Hydrant Pacific Islanders play France on Saturday 15 November (French time) in the picturesque town of Montbelliard. It is the first time a rugby union international has been played at the ground. PRESS RELEASE - 10 Nov Press release November 10. 2008 Sports Hydrant Pacific Islanders upbeat and keen to atone: The Sports Hydrant Pacific islanders travelled to France today (French time) to begin preparations for next week’s historic Test versus France. The squad was, to a man hugely upbeat after the five try to one defeat by RWC2007 runners-up England knowing that with limited preparation time they were always going to be up against it. Specialist skills coach John McKee was philosophical: “We did a lot of good things in the game but little things let us down. We got impatient with the ball. The set play went very well and England had to work very hard – of course we also have some things to work on in this week. After our review sessions we will park away what went on against England and look forward to, and train for the Test v France”. Backs coach Glen Ella echoed McKee’s sentiments: “When we hold the ball we can be competitive and we created many opportunities that we simply did not take. Maintenance of possession, better defence around the ruck and maul and the kick chase are the specifics that will make us better this week. There could be some changes - we will pick a team that might be different but will still be strong as we have a squad full of quality players”. Last word went to tyro second rower Filipo Levi who knows well the task ahead: “We take much confidence from the game on the weekend. We were competitive and have only been together for a week. With the right courage we can defeat France. It starts tomorrow at training where we will progress on the work done so far."
