Welcome
to the Abacus Racing Website
The
syndicate was formed with five members in 1999. Some of us had previously had shares in racehorse syndicates. Having become a little disillusioned with the way they were being run, we decided that we would buy a
greyhound. This had the benefit that we could watch it race locally at Hove, on
a regular basis, and own in its entirety.
Having decided this was what we wanted to do, contact was made with the Racing Office at Hove's Coral stadium. They in turn contacted one of their attached trainers on our behalf who duly
rang us to talk about what we wanted to do. This turned out to be Derek Knight. After his initial contact and
discussion amongst ourselves, it was agreed that Derek would ask one of his contacts in Ireland to look out for a dog at the sort of price that we were willing to pay.
In due course we were contacted
by him and given plenty of reassurance that he would not rush into anything but
would find a dog for us as soon as he could. A few weeks later we agreed to
purchase our first greyhound, and money changed hands!
Our first greyhound, Ballin
Star was purchased in March 1999. After much deliberation, we gave him the kennel name of Rocky. As you can see from his photos, Rocky's sire was Frightful Flash.

Some of the dogs
mentioned here are not owned under the syndicate name, but are still owned
by the majority of the syndicate, our latest addition Droopys Charlize is
the latest to run under the 'Abacus' banner.
Steer
the Way, was the second greyhound we ever owned, although her career was
relatively short, she was one of the fastest bitches over 475m at Hove.
Ellie is now in Ireland with Michael Brennan and is the proud mother of
our lone Pup, "Baby Ells". Ellie also has a litter of 5 pups
to Droopy's Kewell
We purchased Toumpane Ruby mid 2002
in order to relieve some of the pressure from "Tubby". "Ruby" reached the
semi-finals of the Brighton Belle at Hove in 2003 and won numerous Open
Races during her short career.
Our exploits and the great times we have
enjoyed with Druids Highline, throughout 2001 and beyond, will remain
embedded within our memories for ever. Tubby reached the quarter finals
of the 2001 Wimbledon Derby amongst many other achievements and,
although he reached veteran status in Oct 2002, he went on to win a
number of open veteran races after his comeback from a Gracillus injury.
Tubby has now retired from racing after reaching the Veterans Derby
final at Wimbledon in 2003.
Druids
Emmey Jo, one of our current runners, has been a loyal servant to us
since we have owned her, she is the first of the dogs we have owned to
be able to run over the 6 bend trip at Hove & won a Maiden open back in
August at Hove.
