End of story. But for those embroiled in the Starcaps scandal, there are certainly some extenuating circumstances related to the case that make it a little less cut and dried, as can be seen with a little background and outline of both sides of the issue.
Regardless, the NFL upheld the four-game suspensions of six players, Tuesday, meaning each -- barring a legal injunction -- will miss the rest of the regular season. Those affected by the ruling include Deuce McAllister, Charles Grant, and Will Smith of the Saints, Kevin and Pat Williams of the Vikings, and Bryan Pittman of the Texans.
The team hit hardest by this obviously is the Minnesota Vikings, who stand to lose two Pro Bowl defensive tackles while holding just a one-game edge in the NFC North. The New Orleans Saints for all intents and purposes are already out of the playoff hunt, although they have yet to be mathematically eliminated.
The big problem with the Vikings losing both the Williamses is not only that they lose an almost impenetrable wall against the run game up front, but that the absence of their two tackles will allow opponents to consistently double team defensive end Jared Allen, who has been a terror for opposing quarterbacks of late.
The team is also scheduled to face some of the league's better rushing attacks in the coming weeks, and the loss of their two best run stuffers significantly damages their chances of winning those contests.
It almost seems unfair that so much could be lost due to these suspensions, but the league's policy is what it is. And the players helped dictate that policy -- which really limits the options of the players' union in cases like this -- by agreeing to it in the last round of labor negotiations.
Obviously this is something that needs to be looked at when both parties prepare to hammer out the next CBA.Comments (0)PermalinkBurress Could Face Extended Jail Time After Shooting HimselfMonday December 1, 2008 Has wide receiver Plaxico Burress played his last game for the New York Giants and perhaps even his last in the NFL?
As has been reported by multiple outlets, Burress accidently shot himself in the leg at a Manhattan nightclub early Saturday morning. By all indications, the wound he received was relatively minor as gunshot wounds go. However, the 40 caliber hole he put in his right thigh -- with a handgun that he was allegedly carrying illegally -- may be the least of his worries at this point.
Obviously Burress could face sanctions from the league based on its policy on firearms. The bigger problem from his perspective, though, is the penalty he could face from the legal system since possession of a concealed weapon without a permit in New York City is punishable by a minimum mandatory sentence of three-and-a-half years in prison. So unless his lawyer somehow gets him off the hook or strikes a deal allowing him to plead guilty to a lesser charge, Buress could soon give Michael Vick a solid option in the Mean Machine's passing attack.
Linebacker Antonio Pierce could be in some trouble as well seeing as he allegedly stashed Burress' gun in New Jersey following the incident, which could constitute obstruction of justice, at the least. And if it can be proven that he took possession of the gun while still in New York City, wouldn't he face the same charges as Burress for possessing the thing?
Either way, this whole incident strikes of stupidity on Burress' part, especially since it has drawn other teammates into the fray. Why did Burress feel it was necessary to carry a loaded weapon with him to the club? If he felt he needed protection, why not just hire a bodyguard? It's not like he doesn't have the money. And if he were in fear for his life, why go out at all? It just doesn't make sense.
And now it's very possible that, because of his decision to carry a concealed weapon, Burress may have played in his last game as a Giant... especially if the team continues to play as well in his absence as they did in Sunday's win over the division rival Washington Redskins.

Perhaps the most feared defender on the college level, Maualuga passed on entering the NFL Draft in 2008 following his junior season despite being projected as a first-round prospect. He's a big linebacker at 6-3 and 260 pounds, but he carries his size well. He's a very smooth athlete with sideline-to-sideline speed and even better short-range quickness. He possesses great instincts, has a nose for the ball, and always seems to be playing downhill.
For more of our thoughts, along with some nice photos of his college career, check out this Illustrated Profile of NFL Draft prospect Rey Maualuga...

Try Something New!Wednesday November 26, 2008Getting tired of the same old office pools that pop up each year with the opening of the football season? As the playoffs approach, why not try something different like a prognostication pool?
What is a prognostication pool?
It can be a one-time thing or a weekly contest featuring your favorite team, or perhaps pick the top match-up of the week. The idea is to successfully predict the outcome of a series of questions based on the anticipated results of a particular football contest. Questions can be as simple as who will win the game and as obscure as which quarterback will post the highest passer rating. Each question, generally anywhere from 10-20 total, gives the participant the opportunity to register one point each by correctly predicting a certain outcome. The player who makes the most correct predictions is that game’s winner, or you can accumulate points over an entire season to determine a champion.
Here's an example of a prognostication pool...Comments (1)PermalinkSee More Blog EntrieszSB(2,5);Free Football Newsletter!Sign Upif(z336>0){w(''+ap[0]+at[4]+as[0]);adunit('','','about.com',ch,gs,336,280,'1','bb',3);w('')}if(z155>0){w(''+ap[0]+at[4]+as[0]);adunit('','','about.com',ch,gs,336,155,'1','ps',4);w('')} Discuss Recent Comments Sooners Juiced by USC, Leinart Faces Decision 2009 NFL Draft Prospect Rey Maualuga New College Football Forum Added Community Forum w('New posts to the Football forums:Steroid SuspensionsAny Boys fans interested?Romo MVP, Ware DPOY?') if(zp[7].d){Dsp(zp[7],'ip')}if(zp[4].d){Dsp(zp[4],'ip')}if(zp[11].d){Dsp(zp[11],'ip')}zSB(3,3)Explore FootballMust ReadsNFL Playoff Scenarios for Week 14NFL Playoff StandingsNFL Power RankingsFree Football Picks2009 NFL Mock DraftMost PopularFootball Glossary - A Dictionary of Football TermsNFL Playoff RacePlaxico BurressNFL Tiebreaking Procedures2009 NFL Mock DraftSearchBy CategoryFantasy FootballFootball 101NFL TeamsNFL Player ProfilesNFL RumorsNFL Schedules & ResultsNFL DatabankNFL DraftNFL HistoryFootball HistoryFootball Trivia & Games Super BowlCheerleadersYouth FootballCollege FootballsplitList(gEI('bc2').getElementsByTagName('ul')[0]);More from About.comWork Hard, Travel EasyThe best tips for business travelers.Dog CareGet tips on training and caring for dogs of all ages.48 Hours in VegasPlan a hot weekend in Sin City.Hotel AdviceThe must-stay hotels worldwide.Browse All About.comprepareTools();zCi();validateForms(); Footballvar h1=document.getElementsByTagName("h1")[0];if(h1.getElementsByTagName("a")[0].firstChild.nodeValue.length>28)h1.className="long";HomeSportsFootballMost PopularLatest ArticlesAdd to: iGoogleMy Yahoo!RSSAdvertising InfoNews & EventsWork at AboutSiteMapAll TopicsReprintsHelpUser AgreementEthics PolicyPatent Info.Privacy PolicyOur StoryBe a Guide©2008 About.com, a part of The New York Times Company. All rights reserved. var tcdacmd="dt;da"; |
