Money abounds, but why are so many amateur athletes cash-strapped?By Ed WillesVancouver ProvinceThere are many problems in the confusing and often contradictory world of Olympic funding in this country but this says something about the system as its currently constructed.The amount of actual money is far down the list of those problems.Last year, Own The Podium directed $18 million to 13-targeted national winter sports organizations as part of its $23-million commitment for the '07-'08 season and its $118 million in total funding in preparation for 2010.Those numbers, moreover, aren't to be confused with the $64 million earmarked for the 2012 Summer Games by the Road to Excellence program; the $8 million or so Jane Roos and her colleagues at the Canadian Athletes Now fund has raised over the years; or the private funding individual athletes have uncovered on their own.Full Story
