MONDAY JULY 30TH 2007 - OFFICIAL LAUNCH DAY FOR THE NEW BRITISH HORSERACING AUTHORITY (BHA) - The long wait is now over - what rating the BHA is to accomplish remains to be proven. December 7th 2007 - a harsh and cruel authority out of touch with reality. Racing is regulated by old men and operated by young men at the dangerous sharp end who rarely ever speak to each other.

year legal battle over data rights.
British horseracing's financial future rests with three appeal
court judges who were told on Tuesday June 28th 2005 by
barrister Mark Platts-Mills QC
representing William Hill "This dispute is not about whether
racing will go on or whether bookmakers will pay for it, but
this dispute is about who controls it".

TURFCALL STATEMENT
IF British Racing was
being regulated properly, then none of this would have happened. Do
we think that the British Horseracing Authority has the
ability... and the credibility... to regulate the sport in Great
Britain? NO WAY.

"How could Kieren
Fallon, a jockey of this calibre possibly have time in his busy
daily work schedule to be doing anything like this? Surely this
must be a gross injustice and an insult to his integrity. Also
what expertise within this particular environment do those
chosen to sit in judgement have to ensure a level legal playing
field. In Turfcall's view NONE WHAT-SO-EVER!"

One of racing's most popular
personalities
Brian Holmes retires from Racing Welfare
From Left to Right The Reverend Locking, Rowan Hyde
and Brian Holmes at Lambourn Open Day Friday April 6th 2007
(In Brian's words... "The Rose between two thorns!")
Brian Holmes popular racing personality
finally retired on Friday August 31st 2007. Brian, long term secretary
to Dick Hern and for a short time Jenny Pitman, commented that “to those
of you whom I have managed to help a lot, it has been my pleasure: to
those whom I only helped a bit, I wish I could have done more: and to
those to whom I have been no use at all, I apologise! I will miss all of
you enormously as you have become friends as well as customers, and you
have always looked upon me as one of your own, which I am very proud to
say that I am”.
Brian raised the profile
of Racing Welfare in Lambourn. Rowan Hyde who joined Racing Welfare last
year and worked upside Brian, said “Brian put Racing Welfare on the map
and that raising of our profile has been so important. Everyone is going
to miss him and we wish him a long and happy retirement.” Sarah Hopkins
has been chosen to fulfil Brian’s position.
Turfcall Comment...
How is it that the
British multi-billion pound horseracing industry cannot and will not pay
a fair wage to all true horsemen and horsewomen for their skills?
Instead
these professionals who work daily at the dangerous grass root sharp-end
are paid peanuts, working as slaves and left to rely on a charity
for support in hard times and old age.
Should it not be the case
that before commencing their career (in which there is no evident career
structure anyway) that they are told the true facts, that they are
expected to work for a scant wage beneath the umbrella of a charity.
A Wonderful Day was had by all (Thank
you Lester)

LESTER ALL SET FOR HIS BIG DAY
Lester Piggott, arguably
the greatest jockey to have graced the turf, is all set for the Victor
Chandler-sponsored day being held in his honour at Newmarket a week on
Saturday (September 22). Newmarket's most famous resident is back in
great form following the heart problems which saw him in intensive care
in a Swiss hospital in May, when "Lester Piggott Day" was originally
scheduled to have taken place.
"I'm really looking
forward to Saturday, September
22, reliving my Guineas victories when they're shown on the big
screen and meeting the public during the afternoon," said Lester today.
"I was disappointed that I was unable to make the original date in May,
but am back in good health now."
One of the main features
on the NatWest Rowley Mile during the afternoon will be a display of
iconic photos from Lester's childhood and riding career, together with
memorabilia and pictures from Lester's own home which he and his wife,
Susan, are lending for the occasion. The display has been put together
by the National Horseracing Museum and the £2 admission fee will go to
racing charities chosen by Lester.
Lester Piggott Day,
sponsored by Victor Chandler, will start with the VCBet.com Association
of European Racing Schools Crepello Apprentice Handicap, featuring some
of the most promising youing riders from across Europe, all aspiring to
be a Lester Piggott of the future. Lester will present the trophy to the
winning jockey.
Lester will present at
least one other trophy during the afternoon, while he will sign copies
of his book, Lester's Derbys, and co-sign copies of Sir Peter
O'Sullevan's book, Horse Racing Heroes, in the Eclipse Marquee where the
"Lester The Legend" display will be housed.
Before each of the seven
races, which have been named after Lester's seven Guineas winners (it is
50 years since the first of them, Crepello, won the 1957 2000 Guineas),
the footage of that victory will be shown on the paddock screen, while
racing celebrities will pay their tributes to Lester over the racecourse
PA system.
