SMACK-
by Keith Studnick- MAPTA Staff writer
As the schedules are being
prepared and preparations being made at the 16 locations around the
Philadelphia
area, men’s D1 paddle is in the air. This year we will be able to follow all
of the courts being played on www.mapta.tenniscores.com.
There will be no hiding in the shadows this year for any of the D1 players.
Last year we witnessed a
newly improved Martin’s team emerge to the top of the regular season
standings with the additions of Scott Falatek and Greg Friggerio. Their season
of destiny fell 1 game short in the semi-finals to Philly Country for which
Captain Dan has spent the entire offseason practicing with his merry men to earn
that additional game this year. Some say that his off-season playing time lead
to their teams utter collapse on that cold night in February, but other feel
that is what is going to be required of future champions.
Aronimink
also had a tremendous season but suffered injuries late in the play-offs losing
to the eventual champion Waynesborough. Many squads fear the voracious forehand
of their new pro
Pierre
. As a newcomer to paddle, he can add a lot of depth to this formidable squad.
Couple this with a healthy John Stefanik and perennial Men’s MAPTA favorite
Drew Friel, this squad looks to run the table in the 2008/09 season.
Waynesborough 1
had trouble fielding their complete squad, as injuries and poor travel schedules
hampered this squad which suffered four losses during the regular season, one to
the hands of the Waynesborough 2 squad. This force seemed to come together in
the last week of the season blanking Philly Cricket and then made the
unprecedented run of winning all 12 courts in the play-offs, dropping only 5
sets in the process. The team returns all of its starting squad with Dick Dunkel
returning from his extended trip in
Japan
as well as the 2008 MAPTA’s “ninth man award” winner Vlatko to fill in as
needed. Captain Tom fully anticipates this squad will face numerous challenges
during the season as he too hopes to keep his spot on the squad as the other
monkey's are also biting their nails.
Philly Country
capped off their incredible year by making it to the finals of the play-offs
defeating Martins Dam in what can only be called “the upset of the century”
by one game. No one is counting this team out from repeating last years
performance as they have been consistently improving their squad and record as
well.
Greenville
won their last 4 out of 5 matches jumping up many
notches on the board to finish in fifth place. Two huge question marks remain
for the 2008 season. Can Simon and Todd improve upon the awesome duo of Steve
and Tom in the first court? Can Dana repeat last years stellar play racking up a
win on his court week after week? Only
time will give us the answer to these questions.
Merion
looks quite capable on improving of their below 500 record from last season as
their veterans and newcomers are quite capable of taking down any of the teams
in this league on any given week. Teaching Pro’s Pascal and Furman’s games
can only go up and these talented rackets players will compliment the veteran
core of Chaz, Chip, Jeff, Dan, and Roger. If this team gets serious this season
they could easily take home the crown.
Philly Cricket
had a disappointing season despite adding a fourth court to their facility.
Their sub 500 record certainly does not indicate the potential that this once
feared squad can do week in and week out. Unfortunately, their aging membership
coupled with a lack of a teaching pro will keep them out of the top echelon for
another year. Don’t get me wrong, when this team fields its top 8 players, it
is quite capable of defeating any team in this league but we all know how hard
it is to field your top 8 players for fourteen weeks.
Overbrook’s squad
also will have trouble keeping up with the big boys this season. With the recent
loss of last years Rookie of the Year award, this team is not expected to reach
much above the infamous
Mendoza
line (that would be 3 wins this year). That could all change if they bring in a
paddle Stud to replace last years Rookie of the Year award winner to sure up
their squad. It seems that with Greg Eger’s arm a huge question mark for the
season, this team will need to rely on their aging but brilliant veterans in
Tim, Jon, and Neil as well as the current MAPTA champion Tom to keep this team
from potential relegation to D2 this year.
Waynesborough 2’s announced
going down party was made too premature last season as they managed to take
down Kennett in the super secret affair that left them as the last one standing
in the D1 race. This squad is proud to be here and will remind everyone that
says that they do not belong here that they had won something like 24 out of 25
matches while in D2 over two seasons which also included two complete sweeps in
the finals of the play-offs of D2.
Vic Mead is
making their return to D1 after their one year of relegation in D2 last year. If
they can pull their full squad together for the Overbook and Waynesborough 2
matches, they will be able to dance with the big boys in 2009/10, otherwise it
will be another winter in D2 after this year.
