New York Post
"Mike Schmidt is full of it. At least that was the Mets' interpretation of the Hall of Fame third baseman's motivational e-mail to the Phillies yesterday. In a message that was posted on the Phillies' clubhouse door, Schmidt, who spent his entire career in Philadelphia, wrote, in part: "The Mets know you're better than they are. They remember last year. You guys are never out of the game. Welcome to the challenge that confronts you this weekend." David Wright's reaction? "He is obviously biased in his e-mails," Wright said after the Mets' 3-0 loss to the Phillies in the opener of a three-game series last night. "I see a starting pitcher that goes out and throws like Brett Myers [last ..."

Chicago Tribune
"Carlos Quentin emphatically denied he slugged a locker in Boston, and he stressed he has slammed his right fist on the top of his bat after missing or fouling a pitcher "thousands" of times. Yet, the freaky nature of Quentin's right wrist fracture added to the frustrating probability that his amazing story is over for this season. "My last at-bat, second pitch, I fouled it off against [Cliff] Lee," Quentin said in describing to about two dozen media members how he broke his wrist Monday. "Something I've done thousands of times since I was a kid, I had my bat in the left hand and kind of hit down on the bat head with my right hand [with a] closed fist. I hit it a little bit low and nicked ..."
D-Backs scratch Randy Johnson for Sunday

East Valley Tribune
"Randy Johnson will miss his scheduled Sunday start because of left shoulder inflammation, manager Bob Melvin said. Max Scherzer will start in his place. Johnson said he felt the soreness while warming up for his Monday start against St. Louis, in which he gave up four home runs, tying a career high, although the D-Backs came back to win, 8-6. "I tried to pitch through it," Johnson said. Johnson, 10-9, will have four more starts as the D-Backs conclude their regular-season schedule with 17 straight games beginning Friday. Johnson will make his next start Saturday."

"Billy Wagner is closing in on a return to the Mets, but not necessarily as their closer. Manager Jerry Manuel made that clear yesterday, saying how Wagner performs in a possible minor-league rehab assignment tomorrow in Brooklyn, or in his first few big-league appearances next week, will determine his role. "Nobody is guaranteed nothing here," Manuel said. "If that [first] performance is what we hope it to be, sure, he'll come back and do what he's been doing. But if there are any signs of shakiness, then I'll have to make a decision. Whatever it takes to win the game, that's what we'll do." Wagner has been on the disabled list since Aug. 3 with a strained left forearm and swelling in his ..."

Buffalo News
"Cooler heads finally prevailed in the confounding Jason Peters affair. The Buffalo Bills’ Pro Bowl left tackle informed the organization Friday that he will report for work today and end a 43-day holdout. Peters will not be in uniform for Sunday’s season opener against the Seattle Seahawks. However, his return eliminates the biggest cloud that has been hanging over the organization all summer. “It is our understanding that Jason has filed a reinstatement letter with the National Football League and that he is reporting to One Bills Drive tomorrow morning,” said Russ Brandon, Bills chief operating officer, in a statement. The announcement is an emotional lift for the team just 72 hours ..."

Houston Chronicle
"Before the Texans left Houston today for Sunday’s opener at Pittsburgh, right tackle Eric Winston signed a five-year, $30 million contract extension. His deal includes a $6 million signing bonus and $10 million in guarantees. Winston, the second pick in the third round of the 2006 draft — 66th overall — initially signed a three-year contract that was due to expire after this season. A Midland native who played at Miami, the 6-7, 315-pound Winston started seven games as a rookie and all 16 last year. He’s on the verge of being recognized as one of the best in the NFL at his position. General manager Rick Smith, who negotiated the deal with agent Drew Rosenhaus, wanted to extend Winston ..."

Arizona Republic
"The contract extension signed by Giants receiver Plaxico Burress this week will have no impact on the Cardinals' negotiations with receiver Anquan Boldin. That's because there are no negotiations, Boldin's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said Friday. "Anquan's position right now has been well-documented," Rosenhaus said. "He's not interested in doing a new contract with the team. That (Burress' deal) will have no bearing on his situation." There are similarities between Burress' situation and Boldin's. Rosenhaus represents both players. Both had three years remaining on their contracts but wanted extensions that would put them among the highest paid receivers in the NFL. But Rosenhaus said Boldin ..."

San Francisco Chronicle
"Alex Smith lost his starting job as quarterback of the 49ers, and now he's unlikely to be available in Sunday's season opener because of soreness to his throwing shoulder. During Friday's practice, Smith sustained what coach Mike Nolan described Saturday as "a non-contact injury" to his right shoulder. A club spokesman said Smith didn't feel any discomfort until after the practice, and Nolan wasn't aware of it when he talked to reporters Friday afternoon. Smith told The Chronicle on Thursday that his shoulder "felt fine," but earlier in the preseason he said it wasn't 100 percent. He said he noticed a little difficulty on long throws, but was confident the strength would return with more ..."

The Contra Costa Times has learned that Ellis has admitted to the Warriors that he wasn't truthful about how he hurt his ankle, and the two sides are in talks about how to put the situation behind them.According to a team source, the Warriors now know that Ellis' ankle injury _ which was repaired during surgery on Aug. 27 _ was not sustained "in a gym," and "it happened out doors and not while playing basketball."The source did not reveal what Ellis told Warriors management he was doing when he got hurt, only that he "was scared to tell the truth at first," but eventually did.At first, ..."

"Andrew Bynum walked into the Lakers' practice facility well after 11 a.m. Friday, apologizing for his tardiness. There was a twinkle in his eye as he listened to the first in a string of questions about his surgically repaired left kneecap."I'm doing well, man," he said, breaking into a wide smile. "The knee's good. Everything's ready to go, 100 percent. I've been training, getting stronger."Bynum said he plans to begin workouts with assistant coach Kurt Rambis on Monday, another step toward a return from a season-ending kneecap injury that required surgery May 21. Cleveland Plain Dealer
"The Cavaliers have signed veteran center Lorenzen Wright to a contract, General Manager Danny Ferry announced Friday. Per team and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed, but NBA sources indicated it was a one-year deal for the veteran's minimum of $1.2 million. Wright, 32, played 13 games last season with the Atlanta Hawks and five games with the Sacramento Kings. The 6-11, 255-pound center was drafted out of Memphis by the L.A. Clippers with the seventh overall pick in the 1996 NBA draft and has played in 761 career games (445 starts). He averages 8.1 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. He is expected to fill the role vacated when forward Joe Smith was traded in the deal ..."

"Heat President Pat Riley called the expulsion of guard Mario Chalmers from the NBA's Rookie Transition Program "an embarrassment." Chalmers was expelled from the program Wednesday for violating rules regarding outside guests at the Rye Brook, N.Y., hotel utilized by the league, with the expulsion also linked to the presence of marijuana. "It's something that really can't be tolerated," Riley said before Friday's induction into Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. "I don't think he's that kind of person, and I don't think he'll get himself caught in that kind of situation again." Chalmers expressed contrition in a statement issued by the team. "Tears started welling up in Mats Sundin's eyes as he glanced around the Air Canada Centre. Moments earlier, before having even stepped on to the ice for the player introductions of last night's Right To Play Festival Cup celebrity hockey event in support of Special Olympics, the several thousand fans in attendance already were standing in anticipation of Sundin's appearance, which may have been his final on-ice one at the ACC. As he fought back his emotions at the heartwarming reception, the long-time Leafs captain broke into a big smile. "Perfect," he said as he doffed his helmet to the crowd. Are we to read into his reaction that this was the "perfect" way to say farewell to his days as ..."

Tampa Tribune
"Before offering his first critique as an analyst, former Lightning coach John Tortorella didn't hold back in assessing his prior team's new regime. While Tortorella, who was fired in May after seven years as a Lightning coach, will begin working for TSN television as a studio analyst this hockey season, he didn't hold back on Thursday during an interview with 1200 The TEAM in Ottawa. When asked by hosts Steve Lloyd and Jason York about the changes the Lightning made over the summer, which included firing Tortorella, the 2004 Jack Adams winner didn't have kind words for the Tampa Bay's new ownership group led by Oren Koules and Len Barrie. "The International Ice Hockey Federation may have added a new twist to the Alexander Radulov saga on Saturday. In declaring its findings after an investigation into six disputed international player transfers, the IIHF announced that Radulov's case will go to an applicable court or - if all included parties agree - to arbitration, where a verdict could not be overruled. Radulov signed with a Russian team earlier this summer despite having a year left on his contract with the Predators, who suspended him indefinitely on Tuesday. Radulov's case was the only one of the six scenarios left unresolved. The other five involved players moving from Russia's Continental Hockey League to the NHL, and ..."

"The Toronto Maple Leafs management didn't come armed with any surprises when it met with former captain Mats Sundin on Friday. General manager Cliff Fletcher had a face-to-face discussion with Sundin and his representatives but didn't offer the 37-year-old any new reasons to come back and sign with the team. "It was a nice meeting but what was said wasn't anything that hasn't been said before," said Sundin. He was back in the city to take part in a charity hockey game along with other NHLers and celebrities in support of Right To Play.
