Lee | December 2, 2008 | Tennis Diary Normal 0 This means certain people call to mind certain other animals. 'Nuff said - here's my ATP & WTA list:   Rogi - fluid, graceful, fine temperament: Lipizzaner dancing, locks flowing Rafa - snorty with big muscles: championship young bull, what else Spike (Djokies) - pointy head, beats chest, will bellow, wants to steal harem: teenage       gorilla Andy M - lean, opportunistic, clever, with fangs: big coyote looking for food del Potro - tall, rangy, hairy: Irish wolfhound in training Feli - beautiful but nervous: thoroughbred at the races Nalbandian - a little chunky, drowsy in summer but moves fast when motivated, rather          demanding to care for, can be crabby: iguana Pete - athletic, dark, classic: German Shepherd on the attack Lleyton - yappy, tenacious, jumpy: miniature fox terrier being territorial Andre A - bald, walks funny, a little plump these days - plucked prize rooster... So having lived most of my life as a student, albeit maybe a grad student, I am finding it both amusing, then absurd, and now increasingly annoying at how one's perspective changes as a result of receiving a large sum of money. The absurd part is that we're supposed to be in a really down real estate market, nothing is selling. And yet after only a couple of months on the market my mom's house sold and nearly at the asking rate. My two younger sisters and I scratched our heads over that one, but we have to thank those two gay boys for taking one look at the place and falling in love with... Read more  |  4 Comments  |  Tags: tennis user-pic Sampras returns to competitive action as we take a brief look back at his illustrious career By Thomas Rooney | December 1, 2008 | Tennis Diary Tennis legend Pete Sampras will return to London for the first time in six years on Tuesday as he takes part in the BlackRock Masters. The American hasn't made an appearance in London since crashing out of Wimbledon's second round back in 2002. The record 14-time Grand Slam champion will participate in the conclusion to the senior season and fascinatingly, he will come up against John McEnroe in the group stages. The pair met three times during their competitive careers, with Sampras winning all three. I imagine that McEnroe will hold this in high significance as he goes head to head with him again. In fact, the often outspoken McEnroe has already signalled his intentions by saying giving a message to Sampras and the other professionals taking part - 'I'm not coming to London to lose'. In terms of these 'other professionals', well, the likes of Stefan Edberg, Pat... Read more  |  2 Comments  |  Tags: Tennis user-pic The 2008 Top 13 and Roddick's New Coach By Nina Rota | November 29, 2008 | Tennis Diary I've recovered from my trip to Brazil, the flu, and an over-full stomach, and now I'm ready to get back to my exhaustive obsession with the world of tennis.  Starting with, of course, those terrifying year end lists. It's not just that I'm startled to see another year sneak up on me much, much faster than I imagined possible - the worst part is realizing I'm not much closer to some of my dearly held goals than I was at the beginning of the year, it's the task of predicting the future of tennis players who's psyches may not be up to the task of being the next big thing.... Read more  |  13 Comments  |  Tags: Tennis user-pic FUZZED: It's The Team, Stupid By Lexa W. Lee | November 28, 2008 | Tennis Diary We can delve into many ugly truths these days, thanks to the miracle of the internet; we can learn more about everything than ever before possible, for better or worse. Along with the tennis world, I watched most of the Davis Cup final and followed the news and comments in the aftermath of Spain's tremendous victory/Argentina's bloody fall/David Nalbandian faces his inquisitors. The Oscar and Nobel Prize are awards that only bring fame to a few, and do not recognize others who may have been essential in the effort. That's one reason I don't pay much attention to the winners, good or bad. At least Davis Cup is always awarded to a team. However, just as with those other awards, we don't usually hear the whole story behind the win - which are often more interesting than the actual result. Teams usually try to hide the unpleasant things; it's natural... Read more  |  3 Comments  |  Tags: Tennis user-pic You Choose the Year-End Best of, Okay? By Nina Rota | November 27, 2008 | Tennis Diary I'm stuffed with turkey and flan and cannot move, let alone choose the best players of the year, etc.So please help me out here by populating the following list with your choices - feel free to add categories if you choose. I'll be back tomorrow with my choices and a piece about Andy Roddick and Tracy Austin. Happy Thanksgiving wherever you happen to be in the world.1. ATP player of the year2. WTA player of the year3. ATP match of the year (I know, I know, but maybe some people disagree)4. WTA match of the year5. ATP most improved player6. WTA most improved player7. ATP coach of the year8. WTA coach of the year9. Player who abuses the medical timeout rule the most10. ATP player who is most likely to drop far down the rankings next year11. WTA player who is most likely to drop far down the rankings next... Read more  |  10 Comments  |  Tags: Tennis user-pic Stepping Over the Lines: Dear Novak By Patricia Davis | November 24, 2008 | Tennis Diary Novak Djokovic made a good run in Shanghai to cap off his year by winning the men's year-end championships, but just how firm is his place in the Top Three? One of our frequent readers, Sakhi, thinks your time at the top will be short, Novak. In one of her recent comments, she thinks you won't make it to the semis of the Australian in two months time. I found that rather interesting, because I was saying exactly the same thing about a year ago, when people were predicting that 2008 would be your year, that you'd be Da Man. Then I thought you were still not the real deal, that your game lacked the full variety it would take to keep you up there, that it was even kind of boring at times. Your year did turn out to be somewhat flawed, you tended to get bogged down in... Read more  |  17 Comments  |  Tags: Tennis user-pic Spain Takes the Davis Cup as Verdasco is the Last Man Standing By Nina Rota | November 23, 2008 | Tennis Diary Spain ruined home country Argentina's try for its first Davis Cup title as Fernando Verdasco beat Jose Acasuso in a tough five set match.  You could say that the ATP got what is deserved. It had a year-end championship without its top player - Rafael Nadal's knees couldn't take the pounding anymore, its second ranked player wasn't feeling so good either - Roger Federer hurt his back, and then Federer wore out its fourth ranked player - Andy Murray fell apart in the semifinals after beating Federer in the last round robin match....
