Petanque SA Rules Menu Events Results Huh? FAQ Talk Rules Photos News Short introduction to pétanque (boule). The word pétanque is a corruption of the French term, "pieds tanques", meaning (more or less) "feet tied together". It refers to the position from which the boule is thrown and differentiates it from other similar games. To be able to play a game of Pétanque you need, firstly, to be nice enough to have at least one friend. Games can be played between two people, each using three boules. The boules are metal balls obtainable at a number of shops selling sporting goods. One can also play in teams of two or three people. (Teams of two also play with three boules per person, while teams of three play with two boules each.) You will also need a small wooden ball (called a cochonnette, a pig, a piggy, a coche, a woody etc), and any open space of at least 3m by 12m. In many parts of the world it is also seen as a prerequisite to have at least one bottle of wine at hand before a game can commence. A coin is tossed to see which team starts the game. A member of the starting team draws a circle of between 35 an 50 cm in diameter. Standing with both feet in this circle, a member of this team, lets call them team A, then throws the cochonnette a distance of between 6 and 10 meters. Any member of team A then throws their first boule to end up as close to the cochonnette as possible. (Boules are asually thrown underhand with the palm of the hand showing downward) Members of team B then attempt to get one of their boules closer to the cochonnette. Once they manage this, team A then attempt to get even closer. A team continues to throw, untill they are closer or run out of boules. If a team runs out of boules without getting closer to the cochonnette and the team that is closest still has boules left, they throw these to get as many boules as close to the cochenete as possible. An end is completed once both teams have thrown all their boules. The team that is lying closest gets as many points as they have boules closer to the cochonnette than the opposing team's closest boule. If the cochonnette moves during an end, the new position of the cochonnette is valid. The scoring team now has the privelage of throwing the cochonnette. If the game is being played in a restricted area, the next end will be played back down the terrain. (In the opposite direction of the previous end.) If it is being played on a large open area, the scoring team draws a circle around the position of the cochonnette and choses any direction in wich the cochonnette can be thrown 6 - 10 m and does this. The above process is repeated until one of the teams gets 13 points and wins! More detailed rules adapted to South African Conditions are available here.
