Tae Kwon Do is a relatively new Korean martial art though its rootsare hundreds of years old. Loosely translated Tae Kwon Do means "Way of the Handsand Feet". Tae Kwon Do is a hard and linear style. It uses strong blocks, punches,and kicks to disable an opponent. One facet that distinguishes Tae Kwon Do from othermartial arts are the quick and powerful kicking techniques for which Korean artsare known. Tae Kwon Do has several physical and mental benefits. Conditioning, buildingendurance, and developing muscle tone are just a few of the physical benefits. Increasedconcentration and focus are just some of the mental benefits.
Classes are taught at RPI by Master Ray Boccagna, a 5th degreeblack belt in the art. The RPI club is run under heading by Master Daniel Grant,a 6th degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, who runs a school in Hudson, New York.Classes consist of a 15 minute warmup and stretching period before class. Generally classesbegin with practicing series of different blocks, strikes, and kicks. Forms are thenpracticed which build balance and proper technique. One steps are practiced in whicha rapid series of strikes, kicks, blocks, throws, and joint locks are executed againstan attack. Some free sparring is also done to build speed, timing, and quick reactions.The club meets in the Armory Basement every Tuesday and Thursday from 5:45 pm to 7:15 pm.Our club welcomes all ranks of martial artists. From beginners to those with much moreexperience - we believe that we have something to offer everyone.
