Our primary goal is safety and theworkouts are centered around an encouraging spirit of judo thatencompasses camaraderie, etiquette, and sportsmanship. Sensei'sHead SenseiMark Glaser, Yodan.Assistant Sensei'sJoel Carlson, YodanRalph Bajema, ShodanChris Melton, Sandan Mike Sullivan, ShodanPractice ScheduleThe judo club workout schedule is Tuesday and Thursday from 7-9p.m. at the WWU Aerobics Center.Practices are held fall, winter, and spring quarters.Judoka may choose to compete at tournaments held Saturdays fromSeptember to May.PracticesPractices are geared for tournament competition. Athletes who donot wish to compete are welcome to join in or watch any part of practice.Kata (formal technical demonstration) is encouraged for anyone interestedin learning forms.Usual practice format includes 40 minutes stretching andpracticing break falls, 30 minutes of uchikomi, 20 minutes of newaza (matwork) techniques and newaza randori, and techniques, and 30 minutes oftachiwaza (standing) randori.Practice starts at 6:00 and runs till 9:00. Please come early to get suited up and ready to practice. Team MembersThe club is open to WWU students, faculty, staff and community members. Beginners are welcome anytime. Our club is composed of a diverse group with players from 12 to 65 years young. We often are joined by many judoka's from around the world.Cost and MembershipWestern Judo Club is a member of the United States Judo Federation(USJF).Membership in the club is $50 which pays for a years USJF card.This card provides athletes with a secondary insurance plan, and allowscompetition in tournaments.Judo gis (uniforms) must be purchased forapproximately $30-$40 depending on size. Sweats are fine for the firstfew practices.Club HistoryThe club was originally started about 1980. Early on the club was runby Joel Carlson. When Sensei Carlson moved on fromWestern Washington University in1982 or 1983 the club was left without a regular sensei and kind ofdrifted with no real direction until 1987. In 1987 Sensei Glaserstarted to attend WWU and immediatly re-registered the club as an Associated Students club.From that point he worked on setting up consistant class times and a consistant place towork out. In 1989 the club applied for and was accepted into the WWU Sport Club Council.As a member of the Sport Club Council the club recieves funding from the school and ahigher priority in reserving campus facilities.
