Boston little man Dustin Pedroia won the AL MVP award Tuesday, becoming the first second baseman to earn the honor in nearly a half-century. Pedroia easily beat out Minnesota Twins slugger Justin Morneau and added to his ever-expanding trophy case -- generously listed at 5-foot-9, the Red Sox star was the top AL rookie last year while winning a World Series ring. Pedroia led the AL in hits, runs and doubles in helping the Red Sox win the AL wild-card berth. He batted .326 with 17 home runs and 83 RBIs and also stole 20 bases. Basically he did everything for the Red Sox and when they needed a big hit, he delivered. Pedroia will get much more respect this season from fantasy owners. 11/18/2008 1:46 PM   RYAN DEMPSTER (P) » CHN CUBS AGREE WITH DEMPSTER  ... The Chicago Cubs and free-agent pitcher Ryan Dempster reached agreement on a multiyear contract that will keep the two-time All Star in Chicago, the Chicago Sun-Times said. Dempster, who won 17 games for Chicago this past season, will likely get at least $52 million over four years, the newspaper said, citing people it didn't identify. He's expected to sign the contract later today, the Sun-Times said. Dempster was a big surprise this season and provided consistency for fantasy owners as he kept his ERA down to 2.96 on the season. The Cubs will return another very solid offense that should provide good run support for Dempster in '09 so get ready to draft him earlier than you have in the past. 11/18/2008 1:46 PM ALBERT PUJOLS (1B) » STL PUJOLS WINS MVP  ... St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols has won his second National League Most Valuable Player award. Pujols won by a comfortable margin over Philadelphia Phillies slugger Ryan Howard . Milwaukee's Ryan Braun was third and Los Angeles outfielder Manny Ramirez came in fourth after playing just two months with the Dodgers. Pujols got 18 of the 32 first-place votes. He also won the award in 2005. Pujols hit .357 with 37 home runs and 116 RBIs despite playing much of the season with a sore right elbow. Pujols is a fantasy stud and will again be a first rounder in 2009. 11/17/2008 1:05 PM CLIFF LEE (P) » CLE CLIFF LEE WINS CY YOUNG  ... Indians SP Cliff Lee won the American League Cy Young Award in a runaway on Thursday, capping a dominant comeback season that made him the second consecutive Cleveland Indians lefty to earn the honor. Demoted to the minors in 2007, Lee went a major league-best 22-3 this season with a 2.54 ERA. He received 24 of 28 first-place votes and 132 points in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Lee might not have been in the top of your rankings last season during the draft but he will be for 2009. The New York Yankees have acquired center fielder-first baseman Nick Swisher in a trade with the Chicago White Sox , baseball sources tell ESPN.com. Minor league pitcher Jeff Marquez is headed to Chicago in the deal, the sources said. It's uncertain if any other players are involved. Swisher hit .219 with 24 home runs in 153 games with Chicago this season. He likely won't be an asset to your fantasy team with a batting average that low. 11/13/2008 2:57 PM KEVIN GREGG (P) » CHN CUBS GET KEVIN GREGG ... The Chicago Cubs have acquired Florida Marlins reliever Kevin Gregg . The Marlins received 21-year-old right-hander Jose Ceda in return. Gregg, who was Florida's closer for most of the 2008 season, saved 29 games last season and was 7-8 with a 3.41 ERA. He blew nine saves for the Marlins in 2008. In 72 relief appearances for the Marlins last seasons, he held batters to a .203 average. The rich get richer as the Cubs add another very good arm to their bullpen. It appears the Cubs mean business and will make another run at the World Series in 2009. However, Gregg will likely go from getting saves to just getting innings in most fantasy leagues. Kerry Wood is a free agent but could return and Carlos Marmol is ready to take over the closer's role. 11/13/2008 2:57 PM TIM LINCECUM (P) » SFG LINCECUM WINS CY YOUNG  ... On Tuesday, Giants SP Tim Lincecum was named the NL Cy Young winner for his outstanding season on the mound. Lincecum is only the second Giants pitcher to win the award and it had been 41 years since Mike McCormick won the award in 1967. Lincecum was 18-5 with a 2.62 ERA and 265 strikeouts on the season. Most people thought Brandon Webb had the award wrapped up but the writers realized that Lincecum was dominant despite the rest of his team struggling most of the season.
