Arizona Fall League - Week Five (11/3 - 11/8)

Nov 16th, 2008 by Chuck Anderson Gordon BeckhamMonday was Clay Buchholz’s final AFL start, and under the eyes of GM Theo Epstein he allowed four runs in 3.2 innings. For the first time this fall walks were a large issue, he gave up four to go along with five hits. Buchholz finishes his tour with a respectable 3.86 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, and a sub par 1.89 K/BB. His role with the Red Sox going forward is uncertain. Phil Hughes (NYY) came out with his best start of the fall, five shutout one hit, no walk innings. 41 of his 59 pitches were for strikes. Somewhat oddly, of the outs put in play, all seven were fly balls. Brett Wallace (STL – 3B) was the day’s hitting star, he went 4-5, R, 2B, HR, 6 RBI. The home run was off Buchholz. JP Arencibia (TOR – C), Chris Pettit (LAA – OF), Mark Trumbo (LAA – 1B), and Carlos Triunfel (SEA – SS) had three hits apiece. Jason Donald (PHI – SS) hit his third home run and Michael McKenry belted his seventh. On Tuesday Brooks Brown (ARI) matched up against Brian Matusz (BAL). Through five innings Brown allowed two hits and three walks, but no earned runs. Matusz pitched four innings, but was roughed up in the first, giving up a three run homer. He settled down, not allowing another run and striking out six. Kevin Pucetas (SF) threw five quality one run innings. In relief Jason Vargas (NYM) gave up his first run in 18.2 innings. Aaron Poreda (CHX) was also scored upon for the first time, with five runs allowed. Logan Morrison (FLA – 1B), Daniel Murphy (NYM – 2B), Chad Huffman (SDG – C/OF), Josh Thole (NYM – C), Nolan Reimold (BAL – OF), and John Hester (ARI – C) all had multiple hits including home runs. Scott Cousins (FLA – OF) went 4-5 and drove in five. Jeff Larish (DET – 1B) was 3-4 with a double and a walk. Bill Rinehart (WSH – 1B) was also 3-4, with two doubles. Chris Pettit was 3-5 and stole three bases. Brian Bogusevic (HOU – OF) was a perfect 4-4 with a triple and two steals.Three starting pitchers gave strong efforts on Wednesday. Jesse Estrada (CHC) let seven men reach base in five innings, but only one run scored. Sergio Perez (HOU) went five, also only allowing one run. Josh Tomlin (CLE) pitched five shutout innings, giving up three hits but not walking anyone. Ross Detwiler (WSH) hit his first speed bump, courtesy of a Mark Ori (HOU – 1B) two run homer. Other batters bidding for inclusion on “Touch ‘em All” included Logan Morrison, Brandon Snyder (BAL – 1B) - twice, Wes Hodges (CLE – 3B), and Cole Armstrong (CHX – C). Jeff Larish, and Evan Frey (ARI – OF) doubled twice. Gordon Beckham (CHX – SS) bounced back from a hitless effort, going 2-4. Julio Borbon (TEX – OF) hit in his seventh straight game. Quintin Berry (PHI – OF) reached base four times and scored three runs.On Thursday Sean Doolittle (OAK – OF/1B) homered off Tommy Hanson (ATL) to spoil the pitchers’ scoreless streak. Hanson recovered to go five innings, he let up two hits and a walk in all. He also set an AFL game high for strikeouts with 11. Relieving Hanson, Stephen Merek (ATL) had his ninth straight scoreless appearance, but Kris Medlen (ATL) gave up three runs in two innings to break his shutout string. Jeff Marquez (NYY) had his best start, five shutout innings without a run or a walk allowed, and eight ground ball outs to two fly balls. Batting third in the order, Gordon Beckham had himself a day: 5-5, 5R, 3B, 2 HR, 7 RBI. In the same lineup Daniel Murphy and Ian Desmond (WSH – SS) had three hits each. Bill Rinehart went 3-6 with a double, home run, and four batted in. Cole Armstrong went only 1-3, but he walked three times and his hit found the seats. Josh Reddick (BOS – OF) and Kevin Frandsen (SF – 2B) each had two hits and a home run. Nolan Reimold and Matt Young (ATL – OF) each reached base four times, Logan Morrison three.Following Beckham’s outburst, another member of the 2008 draft class led the way on Friday. Justin Smoak (TEX – 1B) went 4-4. In limited playing time his average stands at .405. Lucas May (LAD – C), Josh Donaldson (OAK – 1B), Kevin Frandsen, and Evan Frey had three more hits each. Darwin Barney (CHC – SS) extended his hitting streak to eight. Daniel Murphy was 2-3 with two walks. Ian Desmond doubled and homered. Mike Baxter (SDG – OF) was 2-4 with a home run and 3 RBI. He leads the league in OBP (.548) by a wide margin over Murphy (.507). Catchers Tyler Flowers (ATL) and Mark Wagner (BOS) each homered. Aaron Poreda bounced back with a perfect inning. Timothy Wood (FLA) reduced his ERA to 1.80 with a perfect inning of relief. If you believed Phil Hughes turned a corner with Monday’s start, Saturday’s effort left you shaking your head again. 2.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 3 K. The only similarity was all of his outs in play were once again fly balls. Kevin Whelan relieved him, and brought his ERA down to 0.68. TJ Large (BOS) and Casey Fien (DET) are two other pitchers throwing in relief that have excellent stats so far. Ross Detwiler was touched for four runs and could not make it through an inning. Blake Davis (BAL – SS) and Mark Trumbo led the hit parade with four each. One of Trumbo’s hits left the yard and he drove in four. Drew Sutton (HOU – IF) is still in the top ten in most hitting categories. He had three hits, a home run, and 3 RBI. Chris Pettit had three hits. He had multiple hits in every game this week, and was named Offensive Player of the Week. He edged out Bill Rinehart (3-4, 3 RBI) and Jeff Larish (2-4, HR). Brian Bogusevic went 3-5 and hit .556 for the week. Steven Hill (STL – C) had two home runs and 5 RBI. Josh Thole also homered and drove in four. Dustin Martin (MIN – OF) went 3-4 with a home run and a double. Austin Jackson (NYY – OF) contributed three hits and scored three runs.Brooks Brown’s start on Tuesday earned him Pitcher of the Week. Bottom of the 9th…

Matt Holliday traded to…

Nov 10th, 2008 by winabango Matt HollidayIt looks like the Oakland A’s have acquired the top outfielder available.  Nothing is completely official, but the speculated deal goes like this:Matt Holliday for Carlos Gonzalez, Houston Street, Greg SmithThat is quite a solid haul for the Rockies, but I am not sure as to why the 2008 Salary dumping A’s acquired a top teir player that may leave for free agency at the end of 2009.  But that part of the deal doesn’t matter to those of your reading this.We care about his Fantasy value change for 2009…Unfortunately, my initial thoughts (as a Holliday owner in a keeper league) are not good.  Holliday hit significantly better at home (but who doesn’t), and now he is going to one of the worst hitter parks.  I also really do not think the speed numbers were for real over the past season, and now he is going to a team that did not run as often.  However, the A’s did have the second highest SB% (81%) in the majors.  To top all the changes, who is hitting around Holliday in 2009? Jack Cust and Ryan Sweeney… are you kidding me?  So I am not too excited about where Matt Holliday is going. However, I am very pleased about Carlos Gonzalez heading to Colorado.  Gonzalez is one of the top rated prospects.  In fact, I had him ranked 22nd on the Prospect Watch Top 50.  He did not fair to well during his first call-up, but did perform a little better in September.  He really has a chance to blossom in a hitters park that inflates numbers on an annual basis.  Overall, Gonzalez receives an upgrade, but I am not sure if he will start on the major league level to start 2009.The acquisition of Houston Street is an interesting one.  The Rockies spent alot of money on Manny Corpas last year, and to bring Houston Street to close could mean they do not have confidence in him.  However, I have read about talks that the Rockies are going to move Street to another team.  We shall see. Arizona Fall League - Week Four (10/27 - 11/1)

Nov 8th, 2008 by Chuck Anderson Logan MorrisonCatching prospects grabbed the hitting headlines Monday as Colorado’s Michael McKenry cranked three home runs and drove in seven. Matt Wieters hit his first AFL home run. He has not grabbed many daily headlines, but is producing well with a .304 AVG and .429 OBP. Determined not to be left out Steve Clevenger (CHC) had two hits and two RBI. Julio Borbon (TEX – OF) reached base four times, and has a fan in ESPN’s Jason Grey. Steven Tolleson (MIN – 2B) and Sean Doolittle (OAK – OF/1B) each had multiple hits including a home run. Ian Desmond (WSH – SS) was 3-3 with a pair of walks and drove in three. Batting next to each other, Austin Jackson (NYY – OF) and Rhyne Hughes (TAM – 1B) reached six times in eight plate appearances. Pedro Viola (CIN) had a strong start, going five innings and Kris Medlen (ATL) continues to pitch well in relief. Two scoreless innings Monday lowered his ERA to 1.80.Michael McKenry (2-4, HR), Steven Tolleson (2-5), and Julio Borbon (2-4, SB) continued to collect hits in bunches on Tuesday. Wes Hodges (CLE – 3B) doubled twice and drove in four. Eric Young (COL – OF) had three hits, including an inside the park home run, and 4 RBI. Batting out of the same order, Logan Morrison (FLA – 1B), Jeremy Slaydon (PHI – OF), and Casper Wells (DET – OF) all had two hits and 3 RBI. Kevin Pucetas (SF) pitched five shutout innings, and Luis Marte (DET) made it two straight four inning, one run starts. He allowed eight base runners in this outing and struck out six. Eddie Kunz (NYM) pitched two scoreless innings in relief and Aaron Poreda (CHX) was perfect in his inning of work.Clay Buchholz (BOS) had another quality, if not dominating start. Over five innings he allowed five singles and two walks, resulting in one run. He struck out three, his K/9 in the AFL is a marginal 6.23, down significantly from any of his stops in the minor leagues. Buchholz was opposed, and actually outpitched by Andrew Carpenter (PHI). Carpenter needed only 56 pitches to get through five innings, and allowed no runs. Brian Matusz (BAL) was on the hill too, and the long ball bit him. Mike Baxter (SDG – OF, 5-5), Jordan Danks (CHX – OF, 4-4), and Steven Hill (STL – C, 2-5) were the three hitters that homered off Matusz before he was lifted after the third inning. Ross Detwiler (WSH) surrendered three hits, but got out of his inning without allowing a run. Also notable was Brooks Brown’s (ARI) quality start: 4.2 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, BB, 5 K. From the names already mentioned department: Steven Tolleson (2-5), Sean Doolittle (3-5, HR, 4 RBI), and Julio Borbon (3-4, BB, SB). Chad Tracy (TEX – 1B), Shelby Ford (PIT – 2B), and Jeff Larish (DET – 1B) each had multiple hits and a home run. Darwin Barney (CHC – SS) filled out his line score with three hits, a run, a double, 2 RBI, and a steal. On Thursday only one team reached double figures in runs scored. The starting pitchers set the tone. Shane Lindsay (COL) struck out six over four one run innings. Josh Tomlin (CLE) went four innings as well, allowed no runs and struck out five. Jason Vargas (NYM) was used for three innings out of the bullpen, but he ran his scoreless streak to 15.1 IP. Kevin Whelan (NYY) also pitched three relief innings. He allowed one run, his only so far in 10 IP. Stephen Merek (ATL) and Kris Medlen (ATL) each pitched a shutout inning. They were backing up the best pitcher in the league so far, Tommy Hanson (ATL). Five more shutout innings, with three hits, no walks, and five strikeouts for Hanson. Chris Johnson (HOU – 3B) had three extra base hits including a home run. JP Arencibia (TOR – C) homered twice, Steven Tolleson had two more hits including a home run, and Kevin Russo (NYY – 3B) left the yard as well. Tyler Greene (STL – SS, 2-4), Wes Hodges (2-4), Tyler Flowers (ATL – C, 2-5), and Eric Young (2-5) are all hitting over .330 at week’s end. Finally, Logan Morrison hit for the cycle and drove in five.Jeff Marquez (NYY) made his longest outing of the year in his start Friday, pitching four innings and allowing one run. Jesse Estrada (CHC) also made his longest appearance, five one run innings. Out of the bullpen the Mets’ Tobi Stoner and Eddie Kunz combined for three shutout frames. Josh Thole (NYM – C), Ian Desmond, Justin Turner (CIN – 2B), and Logan Morrison collected three hits apiece. Josh Reddick (BOS – OF), Wes Hodges, and Chris Johnson each had two hits, a home run, and drove in multiple runs. Steven Tolleson had his seventh straight multiple hit game.On Saturday Sean West (FLA) bounced back from his worst start to throw five shutout innings, striking out five. Three relievers, Ross Detwiler, Aaron Poreda, and Jeff Gray (OAK) continued their scoreless streaks. Bud Norris (HOU) pitched two perfect innings with four strikeouts. Some hot hitters kept rolling as well. Tyler Flowers was 2-4 with a double and a home run. Jason Donald (PHI – SS) was 4-6 including a home run and two doubles. Darwin Barney emphatically extended his hit streak to seven going 3-5. Tyler Greene (STL – SS) has a matching seven game streak, he went 2-4. In only his fourth game Jordan Danks collected his eighth and ninth hits. Quintin Berry (PHI – OF) got two hits for the fourth consecutive game. Eric Young hit his second grand slam of the week, went 3-4 and added two steals. He shared hitter of the week honors with Logan Morrison. Minnesota’s Jeff Manship made two starts, allowed four runs over ten innings, and posted a 5:1 K/BB ratio to earn pitcher of the week. Posted in Fantasy Baseball | Comments Off

Arizona Fall League - Week Three (10/20 - 10/25)

Oct 31st, 2008 by Chuck Anderson Tyler FlowersOn Monday the Mesa Solar Sox beat the Surprise Rafters 28-1. Mesa scored 2+ runs in every inning from the second onward and was the beneficiary of eight errors which led to nine unearned runs. I feel a bit cheated that Tim Kurkjian has not delivered a report. Hitters that particularly enjoyed this stat padding day included: Jason Donald (PHI – SS), Jeremy Slayden (PHI – OF), Steve Clevenger (CHC – C), Scott Cousins (FLA – OF), and Matt Young (ATL – OF). In other action Pedro Viola (CIN) and Adam Ottavino (STL) pitched well in their starts, neither walked a hitter. A pair of catchers, Josh Thole (NYM) and Chad Huffman (SDG) combined for six hits, three doubles. Kevin Frandsen (SF – 2B) went 4-4 and Drew Sutton (HOU – IF) homered and reached base three times. On Tuesday Sean West (FLA) allowed four base runners over five innings and one run. A bigger story was his batterymate Tyler Flowers (ATL – C) who went 4-5 with two HR. Other players with four hits on the day were Sean Kazmar (SDG – OF) and Justin Turner (CIN – 2B). Daniel Murphy (NYM – 2B), Austin Jackson (NYY – OF), Steven Tollison (MIN – 2B), and Rhyne Hughes (TAM – 1B) each collected three hits with Hughes including a triple and a home run. For the second straight day Eric Young (OF – COL) had two hits, a double, and a steal. Aaron Poreda (CHX) got his inning of work in, retired all three hitters, two on strikeouts.Clay Buchholz took the loss in his game Wednesday, and struggled. In 4.1 IP he gave up four runs on seven hits and a walk. He struck out only two. On the positive side none of the hits were for extra bases and he is carrying an ERA of 2.92 into his next start. Starting opposite him was Luis Marte (DET) who threw four stellar innings, allowing one run and striking out eight. He was backed up by Kris Melden (ATL) for two one-hit innings. Through 10 innings Melden has a 1.80 ERA and a 9:1 K:BB. Jason Donald (4-6, 2B) and Logan Morrison (FLA – 1B) (5-5) did the most damage off Buccholz. Offensive stars from other games include Sean Henry (CIN – 1B) 4-6, HR, 5 RBI, Carlos Triunfel (SEA – SS) 3-6, RBI, SB, Rhyne Hughes 3-6, 2 RBI, Justin Turner (CIN – 2B) 4-6, 2B, RBI, and Desmond Jennings (TAM – OF) 3-5, 2B, HR, 3 RBI. Leonard Davis (WSH – OF) and Tyler Greene (STL – SS) homered in support of Bobby Parnell (NYM) 4 IP, H, 0 BB, 5 K.Thursday Max Scherzer stretched out to seven innings and 93 pitches. The results were terrific, only three hits, a walk, and six strikeouts. A first innings home run by Austin Jackson accounted for the only damage. Scherzer’s teammates Steven Tollison (MIN – 2B), JP Arencibia (TOR – C), and Eric Young provided more than enough offense to get Max his first win. Jason Vargas (NYM) pitched five shutout innings on only 54 pitches. Stephen Merek (ATL) picked up a win in relief and is currently unscored upon. He was part of this summers Mark Teixeira trade package. Daniel Murphy and Drew Sutton continued to produce, generating two hits each and combining for five RBI.Saturday was another AFL day dominated by hitters. Tyler Flowers sewed up offensive player of the week honors with two hits and a home run. Wes Hodges (CLE – 3B) went deep twice. Jeff Larish (DET – 1B), Cole Armstrong (CHX – C), Bill Rinehart (WSH – 1B), Mark Wagner (BOS – C), Sean Doolittle (OAK – 1B/OF), and Michael McHenry (COL – C) all collected a home run and at least two hits. Quintin Berry (PHI – OF) had three hits for the second straight day and Tyler Greene (STL – SS) reached base again, he has played eight games in the AFL and gotten on in each of them. Rhyne Hughes homered. At week’s end he led the league in hits and RBI. Eric Young went 3-5 with a double and a triple, and stole his league leading ninth base. Arizona Fall League - Rising Stars Showcase

Oct 28th, 2008 by Chuck Anderson Tommy HansonLast Friday there was but a single game played in the AFL. The Rising Stars Showcase is an all star game of sorts, but players are selected more for their performances over the course of the full minor league season than what they have accomplished in the Fall League thus far. Check out who made the cut here.As expected, there was a marquee matchup of starting pitchers, Phil Hughes (NYY) and Tommy Hanson (ATL). Hanson blazed through his three innings, not allowing a hit and needing only 43 pitches. He walked two hitters in the first inning before striking out the side. Nobody else reached base and Hanson finished with seven strikeouts. Hughes has been up and down so far in Arizona, and this was a down night. He matched Hanson’s three innings, but allowed three hits, two walks, a hit batter, and four runs. Three runs were unearned, but that does not change the fact that Hughes did not pitch well. He allowed two home runs, threw only 54% of his pitches for strikes, and recorded only one ground ball out. The New York Post’s Joel Sherman spoke to a scout who was especially troubled by what he saw.The pitchers backing up Hughes were largely effective. Brian Matusz (BAL) recorded two outs, a strikeout among them. Ryan Reid (TAM), Shane Lindsay (COL), Brent Leach (LAD), and Rob Delaney (MIN) had a shutout inning apiece. Relieving Hanson, Sean West (FLA) struck out the side in his inning, mixing in two walks as well. Cory VanAllen (WSH) and Bud Norris (HOU) were scoreless for an inning each. Alex Hinshaw (SF), Eddie Kunz (NYM) and Casey Fein (DET) combined to get four outs and let up six earned runs as the National team staged a successful late game comeback.Toronto’s JP Arencibia has an eight game hitting streak in AFL play and went 2-2 with a home run. Arencibia and the Cleveland connection of Wes Hodges (1-3, 2 BB) and Beau Mills (2-3) got things going in the ninth inning before Drew Stubbs (CIN – OF) drew a bases loaded walk to end the game. Julio Borbon (TEX – OF) was the only player to have three hits, he had singles in all three at bats.Chad Huffman (SDG – OF) and Josh Reddick (BOS – OF) were the hitters that took Phil Hughes out of the park. Reddick later added a double and a steal, and scored. Josh Thole (NYM – C) reached base twice and drove in a run. Casper Wells (DET – OF) walked, doubled, and scored in four plate appearances. What’s Your deal? - Chris Davis

Oct 26th, 2008 by winabango Chris DavisLike I have stated previously, just because it is the offseason we are not going to stop writing about Fantasy Baseball.  Today I finally get a chance to site down and write about a player that I had planned to cover well over a month ago. Neil Goldman requested a “What’s Your Deal?” segment on the power hitting first baseman from Texas, Chris Davis.  So let’s take a look at him…Chris Davis plays both corners of the infield, however, he is projected to be the prototypical first baseman.  At the beginning of the 2008 season, he was the 2nd ranked prospect in the Rangers system by baseball America.  He obtained this ranking after being drafted by the Yankees in 2004 (1496th overall), the Angels in 2005 (1063rd overall), and finally by the Rangers in 2006 (148th overall).  After smashing 23 home runs between Double-A and Triple-A, Davis was called up to the Rangers on June 26th.Sporting average defensive skills and plenty of power, Davis proceeded to hit 17 home runs over the final 80 games of the season. There is no denying his power potential, as an Isolated Power of .264 clearly shows.  He also had an ISO of .285 in Double-A and an incredible .351 in Triple-A.  His mechanics promote loft in his swing, which a 39.9% Flyball rate shows.  Davis also posted a decent batting average of .285, however that was supported by a high BABIP of .353.  Considering that Davis does not have a ton of speed, his BABIP will most certainly regress over a full season in 2009, and thus drag his average down.Like any young power hitter, Davis’ strikeout rate is very disconcerting.  Never posting a strikeout rate under 23% in the minor leagues, Davis proceeded to strikout 29.8% of the time at the major league level.  Combine that rate with a very low 6.3% walk rate and the high BABIP and the .285 batting average will not be repeatable.  So obviously there is a lot to be concerned with. However, his stats are no different than those of Ryan Howard’s from 2008.  Check this out…Davis    K Rate 29.8%  17 HR in 295 AB, which translates to 35 HR in 610 ABHoward  K Rate 32.6% 48 HR in 610 ABSo… yes Chris Davis has 40 home run potential, however, if you normalize Davis’ BABIP to .295… his batting average drops to .247.  Once again, that batting average is not that different than Ryan Howard’s .251 2008 Batting Average. So should you draft Chris Davis in 2009?I certainly don’t see why not. That kind of power potential cannot be passed up.  Just make sure that you pair him up with another player that will help sustain your overall batting average.  I would not argue with drafting him after the 10th round, but I do not think he should be drafted any higher.  If you league has walks, or OBP, or strikeouts against as a stat, drop Davis further down your draft board. What round do you think he should be drafted in 2009? Another great site

Oct 25th, 2008 by winabango I received an e-mail from Eric Stashin from the rotoprofessor asking to do a link exchange.  Now… if you have been a long time reader of my site, you know that I do not recommend sites that I do not believe in.  However, this is one site that is providing plenty of content for the 2009 Fantasy Baseball season.I firmly recommend rotoprofessor.com as a great site to start your 2009 Fantasy Baseball preparation. Arizona Fall League - Week Two (10/13-10/18)

Oct 23rd, 2008 by Chuck Anderson Rhyne HughesFinishing up Monday’s action, another highly touted pitcher was on the hill, Tommy Hanson of Atlanta. He started, and threw 2.2 innings, not allowing a hit but walking three. He struck out four and was unscored upon before leaving after 52 pitches. Todd Doolittle of Florida relieved him and pitched 2.1 efficient shutout innings. Three middle infielders had outstanding offensive days. Daniel Murphy (Mets – 2B) was a perfect 4-4 with a double and 2 RBI. Ivan DeJesus (Dodgers – SS) was 4-5 with two doubles and two RBI. Jason Donald (Phillies – SS) was 2-4 with a triple and an RBI.On Tuesday Shane Lindsay (Rockies), Alex Hinshaw (Giants), and Josh Tomlin (Indians) gave strong pitching efforts. Tomlin allowed four hits and a run over his four innings, and struck out four. Lindsay pitched three innings, allowing only one hit and striking out five. Of his 35 pitches 29 were strikes. Hinshaw pitched the final two innings of his game, giving up one hit and fanning four batters. Carlos Triunfel (Mariners – SS) was on base three times. His success in the leadoff spot has secured him the league lead in runs scored. Rhyne Hughes (Rays – 1B), Drew Sutton (Astros - IF), Beau Mills (Indians – 1B), and Jason Donald all had multiple hits.On Wednesday the offensive fireworks settled down considerably. Rhyne Hughes and Ryan Patterson (Blue Jays – OF) each had their second straight two hit day. Austin Jackson (Yankees – OF) stuffed the box score at 3-5, 2 R, 2B, 3B, RBI, SB. For the starting pitchers, Jeff Manship (Twins) had the best day, going five strong innings allowing only three hits and one run (54 pitches). Justin Orenduff (Dodgers) had nearly the same line over four innings. In relief, Aaron Poreda and Eddie Kunz pitched scoreless innings. In 2 IP Beau Vaughn gave up a hit and struck out five. He also gave me a reason to see this incredible player photo.Thursday’s headliner was Clay Buccholz, and he turned in another stellar performance. He needed only 61 pitches to go five shutout innings, allowing one hit and one walk. Two grounders, four strikeouts, and seven fly outs is how the outs were distributed. Jason Vargas (Mets) and Mike Ekstrom (Padres) were perfect in their outings, 3.2 IP, 3 K, and 2 IP, 5 K respectively. Four teams scored eight or more runs, so there was no shortage of notable hitting performances. Jason Donald and Juan Miranda each had three hits. Emmanuel Burriss (Giants – SS) went 4-6 and stole two bases. He leads the league with six steals. Jeremy Slayden (Phillies – OF) went 3-5 and drove in three. He is tied for first in RBI with 11 in seven games. Rhyne Hughes had his third straight multiple hit game.Friday was a bad day for Eddie Kunz. 0.1 IP, 7 H, BB, 8 ER says it all. He could pitch unscathed from here on out and his ERA won’t recover, which is something to remember. On the positive side, Casey Fien (Tigers) and Ross Detwiler (Nationals) both worked in relief, and are both still unscored upon. Brian Matusz (Orioles) worked four innings. He let up three hits, a walk, and a run, but struck out eight. Batters with three or more hits included: Matt Young (Braves – OF, 3-6, 3 R, 3 RBI), Will Rhymes (Tigers – 2B, 4-5), Jeff Larish (Tigers – 1B, 3-5, 2B, 4 RBI), Nate Spears (Cubs – 2B, 3-6, 2 2B, 2 RBI), Cole Armstrong (White Sox – C, 4-5), Eric Young (Rockies – OF, 3-3, 2 BB, 2 SB), and Lorenzo Cain (Brewers – OF, 3-4, 2B, SB).Runs were not in short supply Saturday either. Four teams scored nine or more. Victims included Max Scherzer and Phil Hughes. Scherzer got his five innings in, letting up five hits and two walks, resulting in five runs. He struck out five. Hughes fared even worse, lasting only 2.2 innings. He gave up seven hits, walked two, struck out only one, and had seven earned runs posted against him. Tommy Hanson was extremely sharp, pitching four perfect innings with nine strikeouts. Aaron Poreda and Gilbert de la Vara (Royals) pitched scoreless innings to keep their ERAs at 0.00. Matt Young (Braves – OF) had his third straight multiple hit game and drove in his team’s only three runs with a homer. Juan Miranda (.500 AVG), and Rhyne Hughes (.390) continued to kill the ball. Chris Valaika (Reds – SS) hit two home runs. Was Hodges (Indians – 3B, .367) and Brandon Snyder (Orioles – 1B, .444) had two hits apiece and combined for five RBI. Mark Trumbo (Angels – 1B) extended his hitting streak to five games and drove in his 11th run. Drew Sutton (Astros – IF) is hitting .600 in his six games, homered off Phil Hughes, and had four RBI on the day. He earned AFL offensive player of the week honors.
