November 1st, 2008 Published Date: 31 October 2008By Kate LahiveOriginal article on the Sheffield Star websiteACE mountain bike champ Steve Peat wheeled out a £13,000 cheque when he visited Sheffield’s Weston Park Hospital.The world and British champion visited the cancer hospital to present the cash which was raised at an annual mountain biking festival.The Wharncliffe Weekender, which is fast becoming the region’s top mountain biking event, is an open weekend of mountain biking, racing, camping and live music.This year’s event raised £13,000 which has been donated to Weston Park Hospital’s Teenage Cancer Unit.Over the past three years Steve and his supporters have raised more than £28,500 for the charity.Steve, who lives near Wharncliffe Woods and does his winter training there, visited the hospital with friends Andrew Hardman, Wendy Duggan and Max Feetham to present the cheque.Catherine Newman from the Weston Park Hospital Cancer charity said: “We are very proud Steve and his team have chosen to support Weston Park Hospital for the last three years.“The Wharncliffe Weekender is going from strength-to-strength and we thank Steve for taking time out of his busy summer schedule to preside over it and for choosing to support our Teenage Cancer Unit this year.“We know his visit will brighten up the stay of many of our young patients.”Next month Steve will receive an honorary doctorate from Sheffield Hallam University for his outstanding achievement in mountain biking.Catherine added: “We wish him continued success in his sport and congratulations for his coming doctorate which will hopefully give more recognition to this popular and challenging sport.” Posted in Latest | No Comments »

SANTA CRUZ SYNDICATE: MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

September 19th, 2008 September 14, 2008Schladming, Austria.The Santa Cruz Syndicate bagged all the titles they chased this year in Schladming, Austria at the Nissan UCI World Cup Series finale. It was a tight points race and Greg Minnaar proved his dominance in this series winning three of the seven events and by placing fifth today he clinched the title, his third series overall win of his career in the elite men‚Äôs downhill. Josh Bryceland sat out the final race with a broken collarbone but still had enough points to retain his hold on the junior overall title. And a collective effort by the Syndicate members this season paid off with the top downhill team champion‚Äôs crystal trophy going home in the hands of the Syndicate‚Äôs fearless leader, Rob Roskopp thus capping off a magic year. PEATY TAKES SILVER IN ITALY

July 16th, 2008 Val Di Sole, ItalyJune 21, 2008Santa Cruz Syndicate‚Äôs Josh Bryceland brings home the gold at the UCI World Championship Junior Downhill race today at Val Di Sole. Steve Peat is the bridesmaid once again placing second in the elite men‚Äôs downhill to Gee Atherton‚Äôs first place run. Gee was the man to beat all week and this race was his to lose, and he pulled through with a run as stellar as his practice had been all week. Sam Hill was on a winning time, over 6 seconds faster at the second split time and gaining speed on the last section when he slid out and crashed in the second to last corner throwing away the win. SEEDING RESULTS

June 20th, 2008 June 19, 2008Val Di Sole, ItalySteve ‚ÄúOld Spice‚Äù Peat celebrated his birthday this week and is still giving the field a run for their money. He ran it smart in the seeding run cruising in for a 7th place finish with everything working well and according to plan.Practice has gone well all week for the lads, yet this track is brutal exacting it‚Äôs toll on the equipment. The test event here in May had the mechanics prepared for bike carnage saying this track was the hardest on equipment of all the tracks. Syndicate wrench, Doug Hatfield explains, ‚ÄúWe keep smashing stuff, it‚Äôs one thing or another, but we have back up parts now. It‚Äôs a tough track, there‚Äôs no other track quite like it.
