two of three at ACC-Big Ten Clash
CHAPEL HILL, N.C., 11/15/08 - The Michigan State wrestling team finished
the ACC-Big Ten Clash with a 2-1 record to begin dual-match play on
Saturday, Nov. 15. The Spartans (2-1) defeated North Carolina, 18-12, and
North Carolina State, 23-13, but lost the third match of the Clash to No.
21 Virginia, 23-15.
No. 3 Franklin Gomez (133 pounds) and redshirt freshman Eric Olanowski
(125) both finished the Clash with an undefeated 3-0 mark, while four
other Spartans finished the day at 2-1. Gomez improved his unblemished
record to 7-0 on the season.
Spartans to compete in the ACC/Big
Ten Clash Saturday
MSU will face North Carolina, North Carolina State, and Virginia
CHAPEL HILL, N.C., 11/13/08 - Some of the nation's top college
wrestling teams and individuals will be on display at North Carolina's
Eddie Smith Field House Saturday when the Tar Heels host the third-annual
ACC/Big Ten Clash. Action begins at noon and will continue with nine dual
matches throughout the afternoon.
Three teams ranked in this week's InterMat top 25 will be in action - No.
9 Illinois, No. 12 Wisconsin and No. 21 Virginia. Additionally, 16
wrestlers ranked in the top 20 in their respective weight classes are
listed in the probable lineups for Saturday.

EAST LANSING, Mich., 11/10/08 - The Michigan State wrestling team
made its home debut on Sunday, Nov. 9, hosting its annual MSU Open. Over
500 wrestlers from schools across the country made the trip to East
Lansing, and the Spartans didn't disappoint as hosts.

11/2/08 - Ypsilanti, Mich. - The Michigan State wrestling team kicked off
the season on Saturday at the Eastern Michigan Open, with 13 Spartans
taking sixth place or higher in their respective weight classes. Six
Spartans placed in the open division and seven wrestlers also placed in
the freshman/sophomore division.

10/23/08 - MSU Assistant Wrestling Coach Chris
Williams and his wife Nicolette have become new parents with the birth of
their baby girl Nolla Steli Williams. Nolla was born yesterday 8
lbs. 3 oz. and 21 inches. Both Nicolette and the baby are doing
well.
Season outlook bright for 2008-09
10/17/08 - The Michigan State wrestling team brings a young roster full of
raw talent and depth into the 2008-09 season. The Spartans, who lost only
three dual meet starters after the 2007-08 season, reload with a class of
11 true freshmen. The team also includes seven seniors, five juniors, six
sophomores, and seven redshirt freshmen.
The Spartans are led by junior Big Ten Champion and All-American
Franklin Gomez, who comes into the season ranked No. 3 in the country in
the 133-pound weight class.
Spartan Wrestling on the Big Ten
Network
10/3/08 - Fans of Michigan State wrestling will have a number of
opportunities to watch the Spartans on television during the 2008-09 season. The Big Ten
Network released its TV schedule for the upcoming season and MSU's dual
against Michigan will air on the Big Ten Network.
Michigan State wrestlers could appear two more times on the BTN throughout
the season. Any Spartans who make it to the semifinals or the finals of
the Midlands Classic on Tuesday, Dec. 30, will have their matches air live on the Big Ten
Network. The classic begins Dec. 29 in Evanston, Ill., and the Big Ten
Network will carry the semifinals and finals beginning at 7 p.m. on Dec.
30.
The Big Ten Network will also provide coverage of the 2009 Big Ten
Championships, beginning on Sunday, March 8. The championships begin
Saturday, March 7, in State College, Pa., and the network will be there
Sunday to showcase the second day. Times for coverage of the 2009 Big Ten
Championships are still TBA.

Roger Chandler to be inducted into
Indiana University Athletics Hall Of Fame
Chandler will be honored with six
other former IU student-athletes on Sept. 26.
EAST LANSING, Mich., 9/25/08 - Michigan State wrestling assistant coach
Roger Chandler will be one of six former Indiana University athletes to be
inducted into the IU Athletics Hall of Fame on Sept. 26.
The annual Hall of Fame dinner on Sept. 26 will mark the official
induction of Chandler and the other inductees. The class will also be
recognized at halftime of MSU's football game at Indiana on Sept. 27.
"This is the highest honor I can receive from Indiana and it has taken a
while for it to sink in," said Chandler. "I'm truly honored and thrilled
to go back to my alma mater for this ceremony."
The Indiana University Male Athlete of the Year in 1996-97, Chandler was a
three-time All-America wrestler at Indiana from 1995-97, finishing eighth
in 1995, third in 1996 and second in 1997 at the NCAA Championships. His
only loss at the 1997 NCAA tournament came against Cary Kolat of Lock
Haven, a two-time NCAA champion and 1997 World Championship runner-up. The
Big Ten Champion at 142 pounds in 1997, Chandler finished his Indiana
career with a 134-25 record. Chandler also set school records for career
wins (134) and pins (40).
"Roger had a marvelous career at Indiana," said MSU head coach Tom Minkel,
who brought Chandler on staff 11 years ago. "He was an outstanding young
man in every way and epitomizes what college athletics is all about. We
here at MSU are very fortunate to have him as a part of our coaching
staff."
Chandler will join a group of 158 former student-athletes and other
prominent figures from the university in the IU Hall of Fame.

9/23/08 - Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell staggered back, falling to the
canvas. The referee ran over. Liddell - the biggest star in mixed martial
arts - was out cold. The crowd roared. It was all over. . .

Liddell 9/8/08 - ATLANTA —
Returning from a long layoff, UFC star Chuck Liddell had the crowd. He had
the momentum, chasing Rashad Evans around the Octagon on Saturday.
With one punch, Evans changed all that, landing an overhand right that
instantly dropped Liddell. Referee Herb Dean rushed to stop the fight, and
doctors immediately jumped in the ring to tend to Liddell.
Evans, unbeaten but unheralded coming into the fight, raised his record to
17-0-1. Liddell, losing for the third time in his last four fights,
dropped to 21-6.
UFC's former light heavyweight champion and breakout celebrity star
stalked Evans through the first round but couldn't land a clean shot.
After a rare flurry of punches, Evans danced and smiled.
Evans countered and opened a small cut on Liddell's cheek in the second
round, but Liddell continued to press the action. Evans seemed intent on
luring Liddell into a defensive mistake. He got it, then capitalized with
stunning brutality. The former champion dropped with a thud, then remained
in a daze for several minutes.
"I was trying to get him to come out of his comfort zone because usually
he likes you to chase him," Evans said.
UFC's first fight card in Atlanta drew a near-capacity crowd to Philips
Arena that loudly cheered every time Liddell appeared on the big screens
throughout the evening. When the lights went out for Liddell's entrance,
hundreds of cell-phone cameras lit up the arena. Evans' introduction drew
loud boos.
UFC president Dana White announced a crowd of 14,736 and a gate of $2.6
million, expressing disappointment only that the card didn't beat Barbra

Outing on Sunday, September 7, at the Meridian Sun Golf Course in Haslett,

Beijing
Conference contingent will
represent 28 different countries in 17 sporting events
Park Ridge, Ill. – As the 2008 Olympic Games commence this week, the Big
Ten Conference will boast at least 100 participants and coaches competing
for gold medals in Beijing, China, from August 8-24. The group of Big Ten
Conference competitors, which includes 11 former Olympians and five past
medalists, will represent 28 different countries and 10 Big Ten
institutions in 17 different sports.

heavyweight, Steve Andrus, finishes second at the Junior National
Championships
FARGO, ND, 7/28/08 - Manhattan High (Manhattan, KS) wrestler Steve
Andrus was named an All-American for the second time Saturday,
finishing second at the USA Wrestling Junior National Freestyle
Championship in Fargo, N.D. at 285 lbs.
Andrus finished 9-1 in the freestyle portion of the tournament
after finishing fifth earlier in the week in the Greco-Roman
championships. His only loss of the competition came to three-time
state champion Eric Thompson of Iowa.
Andrus will be a freshman at Michigan State in the fall.
