The Dean of Shooting Hoops
If you want to be a beast at shooting hoops this is the place for you. Look for practical shooting tips, both mechanical and mental, and also tips for winning at the game of life.
The Right Way To Be Perfect
Have you noticed how people who callthemselves perfectionists really aren't?Don't they always look for what's wrong?Wouldn't that make them:IMPERFECTIONISTS?It all depends on your focus. There's nothing wrong with noticing areaswhere you can improve, as long as yourealize it is just good information. That kind of feedback helps you correctcourse and hit your targets more often. That's precisely what you want.Mistakes only hurt you when you startassigning emotional blame to them andmaking judgements about yourself. If youfeel too bad you'll lose the info that is thereto show you a better way. And yourperformance will suffer too.The best way to be at your best is to focuson what you have going for you and begrateful for that. Then notice your flaws soyou can work on them, but don't beatyourself up.What you want to shoot for is excellence, notperfection. Leave that one up to God.Shoot For The Stars,Richard Dean DelkerP.S. And one of the best ways to develop body, soul, and spirit is learning how to breathe right. I'm not talking about those reinforced stripsyou put over your nose. Most westerners don't have a clue what goodbreathing is, or what an almost unfairadvantage it can give them in the game of life. What's Your Excuse
Simple assignment today, grasshoppers.Watch this video 5 times. Then send me yourlist of reasons (if you dare) why you think youcan't be a great shooter, or fulfill any otherdream you have.Truth is you are a Superman waiting to happen.Start using your imagination to co-create thefuture you want, instead of looking at whereyou are now, or what you messed up in thepast.Despite it's name your imagination isn'timaginary. It is your own personal universewhich interfaces with the composite one weall share (the physical one). There you can always be a perfect shooter, and that won't change you overnight in thephysical world, but it will make a differenceover time. In your practice and yourperformance.Don't ever pass up the opportunity to buildthe habit of success and winning in yourmind. It will always pay off. You'll find yourself discovering corrections toyour stroke. You'll notice great shooters andfind better ways to emulate them. You'll findthe teachers and information you need. Thinkof it like a puzzle which only you can solve.Quit looking for reasons why you can't do itand start using the tools God has given you.Make Every Shot Count,Coach DeanP.S. It's An Inside Job
Working from inside-out especially usingvisualizations makes a huge difference even inthe little things you do.We recently bought a 91 Accord to replace a95 Mustang our 20 year old daughter hadtotalled. No one was hurt, and we like thereplacement better, so it's all good. But it needed a front motor mount, orvibration mount as they call it since it wasn'tload bearing. I got the part on eBay for $19,and it looked like an easy job. I don't like to work on cars, and only havebasic tools, but this was right up front. Itwas just two bolts - piece of cake.I got the top bolt out with no problems, butthen I noticed there was almost no room toget to bottom one. I could see it fine, but allI could do was get my left hand down thereand then only move it about ΒΌ" by flexingmy wrist in the direction I had the leastamount of leverage and control. It was starting to rain too so I was undereven more pressure. I must have tried 25times to get a catch on the bolt head, butevery time I'd drop my ratchet or it wouldslip off. My hand was also bruised and cutin a half-dozen places too from forcing itpast sharp metal edges. I was very near cussing time and ready togive up and pay a mechanic to do it onMonday. But then I realized I wasn'tpracticing what I preached.I stopped, closed my eyes, relaxed mybreathing a couple of times, prayed andstarted visualizing what I wanted tohappen - to get a catch on the bolt headand break it loose. Then somewhat to my surprise and to mychagrin I did just that on the first try afterrelaxing and visualizing. In ten minutes, andI had the part out and back in, tightened up,and I was walking in the house to clean up.You may think that's just a coincidence, andI can't prove any different, but I do know this. I'm glad I took the time to step back andvisualize what I wanted.See what happens when you work deliberatevisualization like that into your shootingroutine. It's not magic. It's a naturalphenomenon, probably based on the waythe universe works, but from my experienceit is ideal for training the the nervous systemand thus hand eye coordinationMake Every Shot Count,Coach DeanP.S. For over 20 years Coach Stan Kellner hasspecialized in teaching shooters how to usevisualization and other cybernetic techniquesto become almost automatic shooting the rock.He can help you take your shooting to the nextlevel too today at:http://www.deandelker.com/kellner_order.htmlP.S.S. Shots Are Shots
"I NEVER hit a shot, not even in practice, without having a very sharp, in-focus pictureof it in my head.First I see the ball where I want it to finish, nice and white and sitting up high on thebright green grass. Then the scene quicklychanges, and I see the ball going there: itspath, trajectory, and shape, even itsbehavior on landing. Then there is a sort of fade-out, and the nextscene shows me making the kind of swing thatwill turn the previous images into reality."- Jack NicklausSure it's a golfer talking and not a hoopster, but not just any golfer. One of the best ever.So I think you can learn something aboutshooting hoops from him, and about hittingany goal or target for that matter.First, notice he ALWAYS visualizes beforetaking action, even in practice. That nuggetis priceless. If you can get in the habit ofdoing that one thing your life can changeforever.Of course, you CAN take action WITHOUTvisualizing beforehand. You can also do itblindfolded if you want, but why? If theworld's most successful people visualize, why not you?Secondly he starts with visualizing his idealend result. That helps energize, focus andintensify the rest of his visuals. Then he visualizes every aspect of the flightof the ball, i.e. the process leading up to theresult. In shooting that would involve thedirection and arc of the ball, proper backspin, etc. And lastly he sees himself executing theperfect form to make the rest of hisvisualization happen.Nothing really hard about that. You justhave to take the time to do it.And I'm serious about using this withanything. Little things even. More aboutthat next time.Make Every Shot Count,Coach Dean - The Dean of Shooting HoopsP.S. In golf you have the luxury of takingyour time before every shot. You can do thaton free throws, but for game speed shotsyou'll need to develop a shorthandvisualization sequence. In his "Primetime Shooting" DVD CoachStan Kellner teaches a quick 3 countvisualization very similar to what JackNicklaus does.Get the step-by-step on that and a half-dozen other powerful visualization drillsfor shooting today at:http://www.deandelker.com/kellner_order.htmlP.S.S. Learning how to control yourbreathing is also a huge factor in generatingpowerful, charged, confident visualizations. If you're not doing this already, don't worry. Not many people teach this. The Ultimate Vitamin
For anybody in athletics, or anybody wantinghealth and fitness for that matter, nutrition isa hot topic. What would you say though is the world's mostimportant nutrient? What about . . . AirGet out your stopwatch and see how well youperform without it.In my research on concentration and focus forshooting hoops I found a classic documentexplaining an ancient breathing techniquecalled the complete breath. I'd heard of abdominal breathing before andassumed that's what the book was about. Ialready did that, so I didn't get around toreading it right away. When I did though I found something thatgoes way beyond belly breathing. And therewere dozens of different techniques to use itto affect body and soul in wonderful ways. Do you see where breathing better couldimprove almost every aspect of your life? Ibelieve most people can. So please consider this then:What else do you know that can be bothunder the control of your will or happenautomatically? And switch back and forthbetween the two effortlessly. That's because it involves both the consciousand subconscious mind or the sympatheticand autonomic nervous systems if youplease. That means it can work as a bridge betweenthe two and has a unique power to affect bothsystems. I can't explain how all that works ina short post like this, but after reading thebook and practicing the exercises I know itdoes. The writing was pretty stiff and archaicthough so I took the time to go through, edit it,modernize the language, and add some of myown thoughts. Now I'm making it available to you. It's sopowerful it's almost miraculous, and it may onlybe limited by your willingness to use yourimagination and belief. To practice the simpletechniques and incorporate them into your life.I've found it a big help in doing cyberneticvisualizations for athletics and life in general, doing affirmations, concentration and focuspractice, energy work, etc.A myriad of ways for using mind and body. And I've found many physical benefits too. Itadds another gear to exercise and helps withmetabolism and fat loss. I also used to get acouple of colds a year.Since I've started on the complete breathing Ihaven't even had congestion to speak of.So if you see how valuable it is to get morepower and energy out of your breathing youcan order'The Miracle Of The Complete Breath' today at:http://www.deandelker.com/complete_breath_order.htmlMake Every Shot Count,Coach DeanP.S. For a limited time I'm going to price thishigh powered e-report at $17.77. Get It Out Of Reverse
Have you ever put your car in reverse, backedup, and gotten interrupted with a question or acell phone call? What usually happens next? You put yourfoot on the brake and shift your attention towhatever's going on, right? Then what?If you're anything like me whenever you'refinished and ready to take off again you mighthave forgotten the car was still in reverse.Oops.Hopefully you haven't ever floored it andcrashed into something before you figuredit out, but if you have, it really helps toremember never to do that again.Have you noticed we do the same thing inour daily lives too?We stay in reverse. We live in the past. Wedwell on what happened to us, or what thepresident did or didn't do, or what somebodysaid. I don't care if you were in the right ornot, any time you're focused on somethingthat's already happened you are driving inreverse. And it's hard to make any progress whenyou're going backwards. You're always missing the present momentbecause you're rehashing what happenedminutes, hours, days,or even years before.Sure there are things to be learned from thepast, but absorb the lesson and get back toliving in the present. That's where theaction is.As a shooter you know where I'm going withthis. It's necessary to pay attention and beable to correct your shooting flaws. That'swhat feedback and learning are all about. But you can't dwell on your misses and yourfailures. If you do for too long I promiseyou'll find yourself sitting on the bench.Shoot For The Stars,Coach DeanP.S. The best teacher of the mental side ofshooting I know is Coach Stan Kellner.I confess I don't know what percentage ofshooting is mental. I've heard as much as90% and I believe it is high, but even if it'sonly 50% you probably want to find outwhat Stan can do for you today at:http://www.deandelker.com/kellner_order.htmlCopyright, Delker Enterprises, Inc. 2006,2007This blog is protected by copyright with all rightsreserved, but you do have permission to copy anduse any complete entry as long as all links are intact.Coach Dean Delker8413 SW 4th PlaceGainesville, FL 32607 USA352-333-0374 Phonehttp://www.deandelker.com/dean@deandelker.comLabels: basketball, hoops, mental, miss, shoot, shooting

It's Easier Than You Think
Have you ever played the party game,'He Who Knows, And Knows He Knows'?It's a bit of a mysterious game and has to bedone in a quiet room. The ringleader starts itoff without much explanation and announces:'He who knows, and knows he knows, pleaseleave the room!'Before long someone who is in on it gets up andleaves the room. The moderator then singlesout one person. Usually someone left in theroom but it could be the guesser too. Themissing person is expected to come back andand pick out the person who was singled out. Those in the 'know' can get it right 100% of thetime. The others sit there frustrated, trying tofigure out the trick - what signal is being sent, what the triggering event is, or what the heckis going on, period.People will think they have it figured out andvolunteer to leave the room, come back and tryout their ideas. Usually without success, tillsuddenly they figure it out, and after thatthey're in on it forever.I won't tell you the trick in case you ever getto play the game, but I will tell you once youfigure it out, it's so incredibly simple you haveto laugh.Shooting is that way too. Ed Palubinskas originally from Australia whoplayed at LSU is one of the greatest shootersand shooting coaches in the world. He missed three freethrows in shootingcompetitions over a 15 year period once, holdsseveral Guinness world records, and averagesover 99% from the line and 92% from the3-point arc still today.Ed talks about 'Mastering The ShootingMoment'. I talk a lot about concentration, andfrom the feedback I've gotten some people aremisunderstanding the concept. They think it'ssomething like being in a trance for a half hour. Or it's racheting up your willpower to crazylevels. It's not at all. Concentration is a relaxationwhich lets things that lets everything thatdoesn't matter to your current task fall away. It's the opposite of trying too hard. It's tryingeasy.Once you know the trick to shooting - Onceyou've figured it out. Once you've found thatgroove, shooting almost becomes easy. Wherethat place is there's a natural relaxation and itfeels right. Now get this. Ed told me you really only needto concentrate for about 5/100's of a second. The 5/100's of a second during the release ofthe basketball. That's how a good shooter can come down thecourt with chaos all around him and still getoff a sweet shot. He doesn't need to concentratefor 20 seconds. He just has to find that rim, bein balance, relaxed, and concentrate for the splitsecond of the release.Of course learning the best mechanics will giveyou a way to achieve that concentratedrelaxation at the right time. Put it togetherand it is well within your power to get into the90th percentile from the free throw stripe.Shoot For The Stars,Coach Dean - The Dean of Shooting HoopsP.S. Stan Kellner teaches much the same ideain his shooting cybernetics DVD when he hasyou focus on the word 'Feel'. That means boththe release feels right, and you also alreadyfeel the ball going into the hoop.Learn how to let your mind become atargeting machine today at:http://www.deandelker.com/kellner_order.htmlP.S.S. Ed has his wonderful shooting program onVHS tape which is a classic. I hope he'd re-issuesit in DVD soon and gives me permission to carry it.
