Sebastian Vettel was testing for the Red Bull 'A' team and put in a great lap of 1m19.751 after turning 70 on the day. The youngster seems to be aclimating very well in his new surroundings.
Just behind, the three-some of Takuma Sato, Sebastien Bourdais, and Sebastien Buemi were doing their best to impress with hot laps as the trio vie for two open seats at the team for 2009. Sato turned in the quickest time of the day, with Bourdais just behind by .02. The Frenchman likely won't be happy with that result considering he's driven this car all season, and Sato is putting in just his second day in the car.

The name 'Senna' inside Formula 1 is legendary. In fact, the name 'Senna' outside of Formula 1 is legendary. Yesterday - for a brief moment - the 'Senna' name returned to Formula 1. If not just to warm our hearts as the cold days of winter blow in, but possibly for seasons to come.
Bruno Senna commented on his first Formula One test saying, "The first day of my first Formula One test has been just as big a moment as I expected it to be."

Just as fires raged in the hills surround Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, so did battles on the 1/4-mile and 1000-foot dragstrip, site of the 44th annual Auto Club NHRA Finals at Pomona. It was here that the last POWERade Champions were named before the series becomes the Full Throttle Drag Racing Series in 2009.
Four race titlists were named after four rounds of competition and the two remaining champions received their golden Wally trophies. In one case, the new champ also became the race winner.
Earlier in the 2008 season, 2007 Funny Car champion Tony Pedregon said, “The championship goes through the Pedregons.” He was right about that, as brother Cruz won his first title since 1992 and used Tony’s whipping of Robert Hight to do it after Tim Wilkerson fouled out against John Force by .02 in the first round!

The Formula 1 teams and drivers were back hard at it today in Barcelona. The test teams have cobbled together their best Frankenstein configurations to best simulate the 2009 rules. Slicks, KERS, some with 2009 wings, some with simulated 2009 wings, some with winglets, some without... it was all there.
For those interested in lap times, it was the Toro tandem of Takuma Sato, and Sebastien Buemi leading the charge to the front in their Scuderia Toro Rosso prepared chassis. Sebastien Buemi is said to have the inside line on a Formula One seat for next season so that the Toro press department will be able to re-use all of their Seb-Seb press material and save significant dollars to help pay for a nice KERS system. Maybe they'll take over the Honda paint job, and become the 'greenest' car on the grid.
Speaking of Honda, the much awaited F1 debut of Bruno Senna took place today. Though he wasn't the slowest lad in the young/rookie/tester field... he was over three seconds south of long time Formula 1 veteran driver Alex Wurz.
Though not great, any resembalance of the greatness displayed by Uncle Ayrton isn't honestly expected.

The Roush Fenway Racing team gambled on their fuel mileage and Carl Edwards literally coasted the final laps of the Ford 400 for his league leading ninth victory.
Edwards was behind his teammate Matt Kenseth with under 10 laps left but Kenseth could not get the fuel mileage needed to finish and had to pit. Kenseth ended the day in 25th position. Once he took the lead Edwards barely hit the throttle around the track and in the end he needed a push to get the No.99 car over to victory lane.
Unfortunately for Edwards his nine victories were not enough for his first Sprint Cup championship. Edwards needed Jimmie Johnson to finish 38th or worse to go along with winning the race and leading the most laps.
The No. 99 car driver took care of his own business as he won and led the most laps with 157. However, Johnson did all he needed to do with his 15th place finish onward to his third straight NASCAR Sprint Cup champion for the No. 48 team. Only 69 points separated the top two drivers in the series after 36 gruelling races.
“The only way that I knew we could be satisfied is if we did what we did tonight and we could feel like we gave it our best effort,” said Edwards. Everything they could control, they did, yes they fell short, but sometimes the cards do not always fall into one’s favor.

It’s as easy as one, two, three.
At least if you’re name is Jimmie Johnson.
For the third consecutive season NASCAR Sprint Cup driver, Jimmie Johnson won the series title with yet another impressive drive during the Ford 400 at Homestead.
Needing to simply finish in the top-37 Johnson knew if he stayed out of trouble the championship would more than likely be his. He started from the 30th position, went through numerous close calls with three and sometimes four cars going side-by side to a finish.
He led once for a total of six laps, but had to head to pit lane while in the lead to make sure the NO.48 car had enough fuel to make it the historical checkered flags on lap 206 to surrender the lead to Matt Kenseth.
It is only the second time in NASCAR’s 60 years a driver was able to win three championships in a row, to top things off Chad Knaus became the first NASCAR Crew Chief to guide a driver to three straight championships. Knaus really did not know how to put this rare accomplishment into words and gave credit to his entire team for their tremendous efforts throughout the season. Read more... Before an estimated crowd of 80,000, Carl Edwards and his No. 99 Office Depot Ford won the Ford 400, his 16th victory in 157 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races. This is his ninth victory and 27th top-10 finish in 2008. This is also his first victory and fourth top-10 finish in five races at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Finishing second was the No. 29 Shell / Pennzoil Chevrolet driven by Kevin Harvick, who posted his sixth top-10 finish in eight races at Homestead-Miami Speedway. It is his 19th top-10 finish in 2008.
In third, Jamie McMurray and his No. 26 Crown Royal Ford posted his third top-10 finish in seven races at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Regan Smith (34th) was the highest finishing rookie.
Jimmie Johnson did what he had to do to take his third straight NASCAR Sprint Cup championship. He won this year's 'Chase' by 69 points over Carl Edwards. In doing so, Johnson tied Cale Yarborough (1976-78) to become only the second driver in NASCAR history to win three consecutive series championships. Read more... Today it is over. Formula 1 will thumb their nose at the North American auto market in 2009 as the self-appointed Boss Bernie Ecclestone's demands that the Canadian Grand Prix keep to their contract regardless of the economic outcome.
Ecclestone was demanding an outlandish $26 million for the 2009 season with escalation clauses sending the payments into the stratesphere by 2013 - over $31.5 million each year. In all, the Grand Prix would have been required to pay nearly $150 million over the life of the contract in which Ecclestone himself may not live to see the end of.

It took three days and four tries to set the field for Sunday’s season closing NHRA 44th annual Auto Club of Southern California NHRA Finals, but it’s done and it’s dynamic. There are championship implications in this field and there are records that can be set.
Even as everyone toiled on the track and watched from the stands, though, all that was visible was smoke. Not just the standard tire smoke either – it’s raining fire in Southern California, directly to the south of Auto Club Raceway at Pomona. Funny Car driver and championship contender Robert Hight had to evacuate his home in Yorba Linda that abuts the foothill. He took all his Wally trophies: they’re special.
