Who? Doesn't matter. This is one of the most prestigious events of the lower series, and many of its past winners, including Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna, have gone on to great careers in Formula 1.
It is a good time to talk about another little known driver, Tommy Byrne. Byrne, who made a name for himself in F3 before moving on to take part in 5 F1 races, has written - along with Mark Hughes of Autosport, one of the year's great racing books. I've written a review of the Irishman's book, called Crashed and Byrned. And as you'll see, I highly recommend it.Comments (0)PermalinkThe Allianz Alliance At WilliamsThursday November 13, 2008It has almost become bad news to talk about good news. That's the feeling I get, anyway. Who wants to hear anything about optimism when markets have nose-dived, people have lost their homes in massive numbers and banks are going bust?
Well, I think within the small world of Formula 1 motor racing that it is very interesting and good news to see that Allianz, the insurance company, announced today that it would continue is alliance with the Williams Formula 1 team. Just when people are screaming out everywhere - without doing their research - that F1 is going to lose its sponsors, one of the most important sponsors has said it will renew its deal with one of the teams. And Alliance, we must not forget, also has a lot of track signage at various Grands Prix.
"Allianz has built extremely effective international awareness campaigns about road safety and risk management around the themes Formula One provides," said Steven Althaus, head of marketing communication at Allianz. "These campaigns have directly and positively impacted our core business activities and this is why our programme with AT&T Williams endures. We are delighted to be extending our agreement with the team."Comments (0)PermalinkSingapore Wins An AwardWednesday November 12, 2008Forgive me for saying this, but in terms of the success of the year's two new Formula 1 races, the Singapore Grand Prix and the European Grand Prix in Valencia, I have to say that the difference was really like that between night and day.
Singapore, the sport's first night race, did not win over everyone just because it was at night. It was everything else too. Where people got robbed - literally - all over Valencia, Singapore is one of the safest cities in the world. Where Valencia produced certainly the season's most boring racing - there had to be one or two out of 18 - Singapore was spectacular with a surprise result. Where the backdrop of the Singapore skyline was spectacular, the backdrop of Valencia let down somewhat - despite the formula that should have worked of a harbor with boats and an interesting city. Still, I enjoyed Valencia for many other reasons - the food being one of them, the ocean being another - and I will look forward to returning, hoping they get the problems sorted out.
For all of the above reasons, it is of no surprise to me that Singapore won the award as the Motor Sport Facility of the Year at the Professional Motor Sport World annual awards ceremony held in Cologne, Germany on Tuesday 11 th November. It is the third year of the awards.
Comments (0)PermalinkMichael Schumacher InterviewFriday November 7, 2008Remember Michael Schumacher? It might be difficult, what with all the talk and celebration surrounding Lewis Hamilton's first world championship title as the youngest ever and first black driver to win the title.
But just so that we don't forget the greatest F1 driver of all time - at least in terms of records and achievements - I thought it was the perfect time to look at Schumacher, two years after he retired from racing. Like all athletes, Schumacher has a post racing career to think about. He'll turn 40 in January, and he's the kind of guy who likes to work and involve himself in things he's passionate about.
Last month in my job as Formula 1 correspondent for the International Herald Tribune, I managed to get an exclusive, one-on-one interview with Schumacher in Dubai on the occasion of the launch of a Michael Schumacher World Champion Tower apartment building, to be built in Abu Dhabi. My story about that Schumacher interview appears in tomorrow's IHT, and is already online on the IHT. But I have transcribed the full Michael Schumacher interview for presentation here on Formula1.about.com.
Oh yes, and I believe that it was with me during this talk that Schumacher said for the first time that he was indeed offered the job to replace Jean Todt at Ferrari, although there had been much speculation on that. Todt spoke about it in Monaco at some point, I believe, but I think this is the first time Schumacher discusses it.
