Gary Gait returning to action in 2009 Hall of Famer coming out of retirement to play for Knighthawks Facing a season without John Grant (infection), the Rochester Knighthawks felt they were a little short on star power. On Wednesday, the Knighthawks filled the vacancy on the marquee by trading Andrew Potter and first-round draft picks in 2009 and 2010 to the Colorado Mammoth for the playing rights to Gary Gait, a member of the NLL Hall of Fame's original class. Gait, who hasn't played since 2005 and whose post-playing career included a Champion's Cup as Colorado's head coach, is ready to pick up his stick at the age of 41. "[My] interest was sparked because the Knighthawks had an interest," Gait said. "I told my kids and they got really excited and told me I had to play and I don't like turning down my kids." 15 October: Gary Gait's playing rights traded to K'Hawks.NLL headed to Florida (for a night) Titans to 'host' Rock at Bank Atlantic Center in January The New York Titans and Toronto Rock will meet on Saturday, 3 January, in the first-ever professional lacrosse game in Florida, the National Lacrosse League announced Friday. Organized by former NLL star Kevin Finneran, part of a group looking to bring an expansion franchise to south Florida, the game will be played at Bank Atlantic Center in Sunrise, home of the NHL's Florida Panthers. "We definitely view South Florida as a place for future expansion," commissioner Jim Jennings said, "and we are bringing the game here ... to give fans a chance to experience the excitement of the NLL in person." The game is the regular-season opener for both clubs and is officially a Titans home game. 28 September: Titans, Rock to play in Florida.John Grant to miss entire 2009 season Rochester Knighthawks forward John Grant will miss the entire 2009 National Lacrosse League, and there is no guarantee that he will be ready to return in 2010. Grant underwent surgery a week ago to address an elbow infection that was beginning to spread to his knee. A second operation on Thursday continued the clean-up, but a subsequent discovery that the infection was attacking his left anterior cruciate ligament forced emergency surgery Friday. As part of the surgery, doctors removed the knee ligament, which will not be reinserted until the infection is completely gone. The tentative timetable for such a procedure is four to twelve months. 8 September: John Grant to miss entire 2009 season.Daryl Veltman chosen first-overall by Boston The Boston Blazers made Hobart College product Daryl Veltman the first-overall selection in the 2008 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft, held Sunday at TD Banknorth Garden in Boston. San Jose, holding three of the next four picks, quickly scooped up Johns Hopkins grads Paul Rabil and Kevin Huntley with the second and fifth picks, respectively, and Stony Brook alum Rhys Duch third. Prior to the draft, Toronto spearheaded a three-way trade in which it sent Aaron Wilson to Rochester, the fifth-overall pick went to San Jose, and Luke Wiles landed with the Rock. 8 September: Blazers choose Daryl Veltman with top pick.Knighthawks turn to Paul Suggate as head coach On Tuesday, the Rochester Knighthawks named 1970s-era NLL star Paul Suggate as the fourth head coach in team history, replacing Ed Comeau (who left for New York earlier this summer). A member of the Canadian and Ontario Lacrosse Halls of Fame, Suggate has an extensive lacrosse resume, from leading the original NLL in scoring in 1974 to coaching at several levels in the Ontario Lacrosse Association. Just about the only thing missing from Suggate's credentials will be addressed come December -- he has never before coached a MILL/NLL team. He'll be supported on the bench by Freeman Bucktooth, who will guide the offense, and newly-retired Mike Hasen, in charge of the Knighthawks' defense. 2 September: Knighthawks name Paul Suggate head coach.Cosmo dealt to Shamrox for Roik, picks The San Jose Stealth traded All-Pro goaltender Anthony Cosmo to the Chicago Shamrox on Friday in exchange for goaltender Matt Roik and first-round selections in the 2008 and 2009 NLL entry drafts. The first of those picks comes to fruition next weekend in Boston, where the Stealth will have the second- and third-overall selections in this year's draft. Cosmo brings along his league-best 79.53 save percentage of a year ago, when he backstopped the Stealth to the Western Division's best record.
