Fortune Cookie:
Light up the Night - On Bikes!
Does your bike have lights? If it doesn't, you'll especially be interested in this ride because the Atlanta Bicycle Campaign -- thanks to a seed donation from Free Flight Bicycles -- is providing bicycle lights for anyone who shows up for this ride on a bike without lights. Of course, if you have lights, you can still ride with us. The more the merrier. We happy to be riding with the inventor of the Speed Vest which displays your speed on your back as your ride. Visit his site to see just how cool this is, and then come ride alongside him as we head to Atlantic Station's Tree Lighting.I'll be leading this family-paced ride out of Virginia-Highland's Aurora Coffee starting at 4:15 on Saturday, November 22, arriving at Sopo Bicycle Co-operative in East Atlanta Village around 5:00PM where the lights will be distributed. We'll leave Sopo at 5:30 to distribute more lights at Atlantic Station and arrive in time for the Tree Lighting at 7:30. Bike Valet will be provided by ABC volunteers so we can stop for supper and other activities. Follow the link to Atlantic Station for the schedule of events. Around 8PM, we'll head back to Virginia-Highland for a total of about 17 miles. All are welcome to join us at any of the locations -- including Atlantic Station -- but only the departure times from Aurora Coffee and Sopo are definite at this time.Labels: family-cycling, fun advocacy, night-ride

Charter for Compassion - An Exception?
A neighborhood friend forwarded a link today. As a rule, I don't forward links, but for this one I'll make an exception.A Charter for Compassion is an ambitious effort that taps into that side of human beings we call "dreamer". Usually, "dreamer" means it can never happen in the real world, but this one might be the exception. In the words of the email message:At TED2008 in March of this year, TED Prize winner Karen Armstrong was granted a wish to change the world. This is what she asked for:"I wish that you would help with the creation, launch and propagation of a Charter for Compassion, crafted by a group of leading inspirational thinkers from the three Abrahamic traditions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam and based on the fundamental principles of universal justice and respect."Since then support for idea has built among numerous religious groups, spiritual leaders such as Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Islamic scholar Tariq Ramadan, and Britain's first female Rabbi Julia Neuberger have joined a special Council to oversee the Charter, and Kluster, a collaborative decision making platform, has built a groundbreaking site that will allow anyone to contribute to the Charter.Universal justice and respect. That would be exceptional. This is certainly much bigger than riding bicycles, but wouldn't compassion and universal respect smooth over many of the conflicts between cyclists and motorists?Labels: shine-brighter

Courteous Half-Dozen
Atlanta's November Courteous Mass did not issue Rain Checks. If you did not attend -- and you would have been in the majority -- then you missed the ride.I had signed up a good number of participants, but the rain fall at departure time chased away everyone I had invited. I rode alone to Woodruff Park.At the park, the plaza (shown above) that is usually packed with bicycles was empty. Everyone got chased indoors this evening. Instead of a Courteous Mass, we were a Courteous Half-Dozen. (Jeff's Photo)We still rode. Jeff had his nearly famous bike stereo pumping out tunes, the horns and bike bells played to the music, and many "Happy Friday's" were passed out.Ride SummaryRoute: Route Distance: 6.8Round Trip Distance: 15.6Weather: Raining before the start; no rain after the start. Spontaneous non-Combustion
It was over before I could pull out my camera. Perhaps there will come a day when this is commonplace -- it certainly felt commonplace judging from the complete lack of any reaction -- but at the corner of Peachtree and 5th ...Rewind several months: In April of 2007, one block away, three cyclists spontaneously met at the stoplight. The following Spring, five cyclists' paths converged upon the intersection. This morning, I followed a pair of cyclists approaching a third cyclist waiting at the light. Before I clipped out, another approached from the left and then another from the right. Six simultaneous, independent bicycle commuters. No internal combustion required.I like when the commute turns into a group ride.Commute SummaryRound Trip Distance: 18.8Number of Cyclists seen: 25 (9 inbound and 16 outbound)In-bound Route: Goofin' 9.6Out-bound Route: Emory via CliftonWeather: Maybe I should have worn long pants. Fingers stiff with no gloves. Must have been closer to freezing than I thought.Labels: bike-commuting, counting-cyclists, recreational-commuting

Beautiful Day at the Rock
Smooth pavement, great weather, sun bouncing off the lake, all smiles. We affectionately call Stone Mountain "The Rock", and although from many vantage points, it looks like a big rock, there are also a lot of trees. There's also a lake surrounding much of the rock and the roads either pass between the lake and the rock (inner loop) or around both the lake and the rock (outer loop). We usually ride both loops. The roads were recently re-surfaced and that always makes for a nice ride. We were out here a couple of weeks ago and I wished I had brought a camera. Today I did.Labels: rides

Shades of Stop - Part 2
A local man died the other day. He was a cyclist, riding to work when he was struck by a car and killed. The police report stated he had run a stop sign, but friends who have ridden with him question this. This cyclist chastised others for not obeying the laws and was well respected by fellow cyclists. The only witness was the driver who struck him.Whether the cyclist ran the stop sign or not, the driver's story is plausible because cyclists do run stop signs. Our actions on the road are noticed and do shape the actions of others, sometimes in unintended ways.Perhaps some good can come from bad news.

Shorts Day in November
It's warm enough in Atlanta to wear shorts in November. Just when we thought the excellent weather was over, we're treated to a few more bright days before we put the summer clothes away for good. I'm in shorts again.Instead of a picture of my bare calves, I opted for the more subtle reflection off the bike bell. My arm reaching toward the left handlebar looks like it might be holding the sun.Commute SummaryRound Trip Distance: 12.1Number of Cyclists seen: 12 including a 4th-grader on his way to school.In-bound Route: Lullwater/PATH trailOut-bound Route: Direct (chatted with Peter who lives nearby)Weather: 48 in AM, bright and sunny all day, upper 60s on way home.
