Our View Jacobs might be a risky fantasy player for this week, as the Giants have two other solid backs in Derrick Ward and Ahmad Bradshaw. Even if Jacobs plays, he could see reduced carries. Jason Witten, TE - Dallas Cowboys November 18 @ 10:58pm CT Witten feeling better - Jason Witten said his fractured rib was feeling better on Tuesday, according to the Dallas Morning News. Our View Witten's been playing through the injury but hasn't been producing much for fantasy players since getting hurt. Miles Austin, WR - Dallas Cowboys November 18 @ 10:41pm CT Austin out 2-4 weeks - Miles Austin will miss 2-4 weeks with a sprained LCL, according to the Dallas Morning News. Our View Austin hasn't had a whole lot of fantasy value this season and it is safe to drop him at this point. Jerome Harrison, RB - Cleveland Browns November 18 @ 10:36pm CT Harrison's status uncertain for Sunday - Jerome Harrison's status for Sunday is uncertain after he injured his hamstring on Monday night, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Our View Harrison has been fairly productive in his last two games, but still doesn't have a ton of fantasy value. Jason Davis, FB - Oakland Raiders November 18 @ 10:30pm CT Raiders release Davis - The Raiders have released Jason Davis, according to the Sacramento Bee. Our View Luke Lawton is the only remaining fullback on the Raiders' roster. Davis didn't have any fantasy value. Matt Schaub, QB - Houston Texans November 18 @ 7:22pm CT Schaub to begin throwing this week - Matt Schaub could begin throwing sometime this week, according to the Texans' official site. Our View Schaub probably won't have much fantasy value the rest of the year. He'll probably at most only be able to play Houston's last two games. Matt Hasselbeck, QB - Seattle Seahawks November 18 @ 7:10pm CT Hasselbeck apologizes for comments - Matt Hasselbeck apologized for saying that some of the Cardinals' defenders should be fined, according to the Associated Press. Our View Hasselbeck's comments do appear to be unwarranted so it's nice that he retracted them, by saying the Cardinals' players played within the rules and that he hoped no one on their club got fined. As of Tuesday evening, none of them have been fined. Hines Ward, WR - Pittsburgh Steelers November 18 @ 6:18pm CT Ward not worried about Bengals - Hines Ward isn't worried about the Bengals' attempting to get revenge on him for a hit in the teams' first meeting, according to the Associated Press. Our View Ward broke linebacker Keith Rivers' jaw when he threw a block in October 19th's 38-10 win. More Player News AL NL Kevin Youkilis, 1B - Boston Red Sox November 18 @ 11:47pm CT Youkilis finishes third - Boston Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis finished in third place in AL MVP voting behind winner Dustin Pedroia and Justin Morneau, according to MLB.com. Our View Youkilis had a career year in 2008 with career highs in batting average (.312), home runs (29), and RBI (115). Mike Rabelo, C - Florida Marlins November 18 @ 10:50pm CT Rabelo placed on waivers - Looking to free up space on their 40-man roster, the Marlins placed catcher Mike Rabelo on waivers Thursday, according to MLB.com. Our View Rabelo only played 34 games in the big leagues in 2008. He hit three home runs and an average of .202. A.J. Burnett, P - Toronto Blue Jays November 18 @ 10:09pm CT Burnett a Red Sox? - The Boston Red Sox have apparently thrown their hats into the ring in what could become a three-way battle between AL East rivals to land free-agent right hander A.J. Burnett, according to the Providence Journal. Our View The Yankees, Red Sox and Blue Jays are just a few of the teams that are in the running for Burnett. He went 18-10 for Toronto in 2008 and an ERA of 4.07. Cole Armstrong, C - Chicago White Sox November 18 @ 8:24pm CT Armstrong having strong AFL - Cole Armstrong was 3-for-6 on Tuesday with his seventh home run and three RBI in AFL play. Our View Some believe that Armstrong will see some time in the major leagues soon and could be the backup behind AJ Pierzynski. Jason Donald, SS - Philadelphia Phillies November 18 @ 8:16pm CT Donald homers - Phillies prospect Jason Donald went 1-for-4 with a home run in Arizona Fall League play. Our View Donald's home run was his fifth in the AFL and is hitting .414. Ichiro Suzuki, RF - Seattle Mariners November 18 @ 8:10pm CT Mariners decide on Wakamatsu for manager - The Mariners have reportedly decided on Oakland Athletics bench coach Don Wakamatsu as their new manager, according to the Sporting News. Our View Wakamatsu doesn't have any previous experience as a manager at the major league level. Lou Marson, C - Philadelphia Phillies November 18 @ 8:10pm CT Marson drives in four - Lou Marson was 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI in the Arizona Fall League. Our View Marson is hitting .310 with 10 RBI in AFL play. CC Sabathia, P - Milwaukee Brewers November 18 @ 7:29pm CT Brewers still waiting - Brewers general manager Doug Melvin is still waiting to hear back from CC Sabathia's, according to Brewers.com. "I didn't have any time today to call," said Melvin. "If I get a chance [Wednesday], maybe. I don't have any set day to do something." Our View Melvin and the Brewers would love an answer from Sabathia so they can move on if he declines their offer. If they wait to long their might not be many options for the Brewers. More Player News Kobe Bryant, G - Los Angeles Lakers November 19 @ 12:40am CT Kobe still has another strong game in win - Kobe Bryant was held under his season average of 24.8 points-per-game, with 21 by the Bulls, but the Lakers still won 116-109. Bryant also had five rebounds, six assists, three steals, and two blocks. Our View Even without going off for 30+ points, Kobe still is a strong fantasy contributor as he registered across the board on Tuesday. He's making a run at back-to-back MVPs. Pau Gasol, F - Los Angeles Lakers November 19 @ 12:34am CT Gasol has huge game for Lakers - Pau Gasol had a huge game in leading the Lakers to victory on Tuesday. He finished with 34 points, six rebounds, and three assists. Our View This was Gasol's best game of the young season as it was his season high in scoring. Ben Gordon, G - Chicago Bulls November 19 @ 12:32am CT Gordon comes up with another big game - Ben Gordon along with Derrick Rose is becoming one of the best scoring guards in the league. Gordon had 23 points, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Our View Gordon is a great fantasy option at guard right now. Keep him in your lineup. Derrick Rose, G - Chicago Bulls November 19 @ 12:27am CT Rose has another great game in Bulls' loss - Derrick Rose had another strong start on Tuesday, posting 25 points, nine assists, and three rebounds. Our View Rose continues to live up to his draft position in both reality and fantasy. He's having a fantastic rookie season and is certain to challenge Greg Oden and Michael Beasley for rookie of the year. Stephen Jackson, G - Golden State Warriors November 19 @ 12:21am CT Jackson has big game for GS - Stephen Jackson had a big game his first time out after signing a contract extension with the Warriors. He posted 20 points, eight rebounds, eight assists, a steal, and a block. Our View Jackson's earning his money as well as the respect of his fantasy owners with games like this. Anthony Morrow, G - Golden State Warriors November 19 @ 12:19am CT Morrow leads Warriors to win - Anthony Morrow had another big night on Tuesday, with 25 points, four rebounds, one assist, and one steal. Our View Morrow's scoring fairly consistently and is picking up rebounds as well. Brandon Roy, G - Portland Trailblazers November 19 @ 12:15am CT Roy strong for Blazers - Brandon Roy tied with Greg Oden for the Blazers' scoring lead with 22 points on Tuesday. He also had nine assists, four rebounds, and four steals. Our View Roy is one of the most consistent scorers in the league and continues to produce for fantasy owners. Greg Oden, C - Portland Trailblazers November 19 @ 12:11am CT Oden has huge game in loss - Greg Oden had his best game of his young career on Tuesday, scoring 22 points to go with 10 rebounds in a 109-106 loss to the Warriors in 30 minutes off of the bench. He also had two assists, two blocks, and a steal. Our View Oden's fantasy stock continues to rise and he is owned now in nearly every league. More Player News Kris Versteeg, RW - Chicago Blackhawks November 18 @ 11:30pm CT Versteeg scores again - Kris Versteeg scored his sixth goal of the year in the Blackhawks' 3-2 shootout win over the Coyotes. Our View Versteeg has come on strong lately with eight points in his last seven games. Shane Doan, RW - Phoenix Coyotes November 18 @ 11:26pm CT Doan reaches double digits in goals - Shane Doan scored the game-tying goal in the third period to send the Coyotes into shootouts against the Blackhawks. The goal was Doan's 10th of the year but Phoenix loss to the Blackhawks in shootouts. Our View Doan has been the best contributor for the Coyotes this year and continues to lead the team in goals and points. Patrick Sharp, LW - Chicago Blackhawks November 18 @ 11:23pm CT Sharp scores 10th - Patrick Sharp scored his 10th goal of the year on Tuesday night when the Blackhawks beat the Coyotes 3-2 in shootouts. Our View Sharp is continuing to rack up goals. He is leading the Blackhawks in goals and also has racked up 24 penalty minutes. Peter Budaj, G - Colorado Avalanche November 18 @ 11:15pm CT Budaj stops 47 shots - Peter Budaj took the loss on Tuesday night but he stopped 47-of-50 shots taken by the Flames. The Avalanche loss to Calgary 4-1. Our View This is the first loss for Budaj in his last four games. The Avalanche defense didn't give the net minder much help tonight. Adrian Aucoin, D - Calgary Flames November 18 @ 11:11pm CT Aucoin scores in win - Adrian Aucoin helped the Flames to a 4-1 win over the Avalanche on Tuesday night with a goal and an assist. Aucoin also was a +3 on the night. Our View Aucoin has now scored three goals and has four assists but doesn't have any fantasy value. Jarome Iginla, RW - Calgary Flames November 18 @ 11:07pm CT Iginla scores - Jarome Iginla scored an empty net goal in the Flames' 4-1 win over the Avalanche on Tuesday night. Our View Iginla now has 11 goals in 19 games this year and that number puts him third in all of the NHL. Bryan McCabe, D - Florida Panthers November 18 @ 10:19pm CT McCabe scores a pair - Bryan McCabe scored two goals in the Panthers' 4-3 win over the Lighting on Tuesday night. Our View McCabe has only played in seven games this year and has now scored three goals but doesn't have any fantasy value. Daniel Winnik, C - Phoenix Coyotes November 18 @ 10:01pm CT Winnik sits out - Coyotes forward Daniel Winnik, who suffered a bruised midsection when he was struck by a puck during Monday's practice, sat out Tuesday night's game, according to the Arizona Republic. Our View Winnik has only registered one point in 15 games and he doesn't hold any fantasy value. More Player News Menard ends with a whimper November 18 @ 3:17pm CT "It wasn't the finish we had hoped for in the last race of the season," Paul Menard said in a team press release, regarding his 30th-place finish in the Ford 400. "Fuel strategy definitely played out in the end." Our View Now it's time to refocus and set sights on 2009. Menard will join Yates Racing, where Travis Kvapil finished seventh for the same organization in the same race. Roush calls for gentlemen's ban on all tests November 18 @ 12:21pm CT Jack Roush issued a challenge to his fellow car owners, that would create a gentlemen's agreement to ban all testing—not only follow NASCAR's ban of testing on sanctioned race tracks, according to NASCAR.com. Our View We don't see this happening. Not that the other owners aren't gentlemen, but there is simply too much on the line. Ambrose looks beyond Homestead November 18 @ 11:41am CT Despite a disappointing Homestead race that landed Marcos Ambrose outside the top 35 in owner points, the team is looking forward to the 2009 season, according to a team press release. Our View There is plenty of reason to be encouraged. On several occasions this year, Ambrose produced better results than the formal Rookie of the Year (ROTY) candidates. Red Bull ends in top 35 November 17 @ 2:18pm CT For the first time in their history, Red Bull Racing will go to Daytona with guaranteed starting positions for both of their cars. Brian Vickers climbed into the N0. 84 in and drove it to a 32nd-place finish, which was just enough to allow him to pass a stricken Marcos Ambrose for 35th in the points, according to SceneDaily.com. Our View Ironically, Scott Speed did much better in the No. 83. He qualified second and finish on the lead lap in 16th. Smith wins ROTY honors November 17 @ 1:21pm CT In a ho-hum season for rookies, Regan Smith had the most points and votes in the Rookie of the Year (ROTY) balloting and took top honors, according to SceneDaily.com. Our View Let's hope that next year's class of freshmen is a little more productive. Smith wins final Rookie of the Race honors November 16 @ 9:40pm CT Regan Smith won Rookie of the Race honors for the 11th time this year with his 34th-place finish, which was much less impressive in light of the fact that he was the only rookie in the race. Our View And: for the 11th time this year, the official rookies were beaten by a first-year driver not competing for the honors. This time Scott Speed bested Smith with a 16th-place finish. Gordon, Harvick, Kenseth all winless November 16 @ 7:11pm CT To pay off last week's poll question: all four of the showcased drivers— Kevin Harvick, Jeff Gordon, Martin Truex Jr. and Matt Kenseth all posted goose eggs in the wins column. Harvick finish second; the best of the bunch. Our View He used a fuel strategy to try and steal a victory along with Gordon in fourth. Truex finished 10th and Kenseth ran out of gas late, slipped off the lead lap and finished 25th. Johnson is Cup champion November 16 @ 6:19pm CT Jimmie Johnson could not afford to gamble on fuel and he was forced into the pits with a handful of laps remaining. Needing to finish only 37th or better at that stage, he crossed the line 15th. Our View Johnson was not point racing, however: he gave up a fifth-place spot on lap 253 of 267. This matched his worst Chase performance in two years and all that matters is that he is now only the second ever racer to win three consecutive Championships. More Player News Romero, others named as candidates for Rookie of the Year November 18 @ 8:53pm CT The 16-man Players Advisory Council and four player-directors on the PGA TOUR policy board have nominated five players for the PGA's Rookie of the Year award, according to the Associated Press. That list includes Dustin Johnson, Chez Reavie, Andres Romero, Kevin Streelman and Marc Turnesa, with all but Streelman winning a TOUR event. Reavie (RBC Canadian Open) and Romero (Zurich Classic of New Orleans) won events that awarded full FedExCup points. Our View No rookie had a better season than Romero, the Argentine who made the cut in all four majors (with top 10s in two of them) and finished 36th on the money list -- the highest of the rookie nominees. He also was the only rookie at THE TOUR Championship. It will be interesting to see whether players regard him as a pure rookie. Romero, 27, has played on the European Tour and nearly won the British Open last year at Carnoustie. Love III, Mediate, Hart nominated for comeback award November 18 @ 8:50pm CT Winning the final PGA TOUR event of the year could lead to Davis Love III winning his first award on a vote of the players, according to the Associated Press. The 16-man Players Advisory Council and four player-directors on the PGA TOUR policy board have nominated Love, Rocco Mediate and Dudley Hart as candidates for comeback player of the year. Our View Love is the only winner among the candidates, at Disney World for his 20th career victory. He was recovering from ankle surgery that kept him out of golf for four months and out of contention until the final month of the season. All three of his top 10s came during the Fall Series. Limited by back injuries, Mediate lost a 19-hole playoff to Tiger Woods in the U.S. Open and had another top 10 at the Memorial to finish 74th on the money list, his best year since 2003. Hart missed most of last year during his wife's illness tending to his triplets, played this year on a family crisis extension and made it to THE TOUR Championship for the first time since 1999. He had six top 10s, including a runner-up finish at the BMW Championship, which enabled him to finish 12th in the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup. Seve released from ICU following third brain surgery November 18 @ 8:43pm CT Golf great Severiano Ballesteros was released from intensive care Tuesday following brain surgery on a malignant tumor, according to the Associated Press. The 51-year-old Spaniard will remain in the hospital to continue rehabilitation following three operations in 18 days. Madrid's La Paz hospital said the healing process is slow and there was no timetable for his release. Restricted visits are being allowed for the first time. Our View Ballesteros underwent a 6˝-hour operation Oct. 24 to remove the tumor and reduce swelling around the brain. He was admitted Oct. 6 after fainting at Madrid's international airport. Ballesteros won the British Open three times and the Masters twice. He is often praised for having transformed European golf and helped Europe beat the United States in the 1985 Ryder Cup to begin two decades of dominance. He also captained Europe to victory in 1997 at Valderrama, Spain. Ryder Cup champions visit White House November 17 @ 8:39pm CT President George W. Bush celebrated Monday with American golfers who reclaimed the Ryder Cup for the U.S, according to the Associated Press. Bush held a private picture-taking session in the Oval Office with coach Paul Azinger and seven members of the 12-member 2008 U.S. Ryder Cup team, which ended an era of frustration in September with a resounding victory over Europe. Our View Bush posed with Azinger, longtime Ryder Cup participant and assistant captain Raymond Floyd, and 2008 team members Stewart Cink, Chad Campbell, Ben Curtis, Hunter Mahan, Jim Furyk, J.B. Holmes and Boo Weekley. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, an avid golfer herself, was there as well. The team gave Bush a personalized Ryder Cup golf bag, the same Sunday red golf shirt and sweater vest worn by the team and a Ryder Cup money clip. Buick pulls courtesy cars in first sign of financial hardship for PGA November 17 @ 8:36pm CT In another sign of fragile financial conditions, some PGA Tour events are trying to figure out transportation for players after learning over the weekend that Buick will not be providing courtesy cars to most tournaments next year, according to the Associated Press. "We've already started scrambling to try to approach local dealers or national suppliers to see if they're interested," said Clair Peterson, tournament director of the John Deere Classic. "The car industry as a whole is in a tough spot. We've already had one company tell us everything has been frozen in '09." Other tournaments that Buick will no longer supply include the U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee, the AT&T National in Washington and the Transitions Championship outside Tampa, Fla. The Shell Houston Open remains hopeful of keeping its Buick courtesy car deal. The Northern Trust Open in Los Angeles had a deal with Nissan, its previous title sponsor, that expired last year. Tournament director Tom Pulchinski said he tried to arrange a deal with Buick and was turned down. "The business model has changed," Pulchinski said. "It's definitely going to be an expense. We probably would provide cars, even if it's a rental deal where we pick up the cars and foot the bill. We talked to Buick, but they could not swing it." Our View Buick is the official car of the PGA Tour and for years has provided courtesy cars to a majority of tour events. But General Motors posted a $2.5 billion quarterly loss earlier this month and has said its cash burn has reached the point where it could have the minimum amount required to operate by early next year. One tournament official, speaking on condition of anonymity because Buick has not made an announcement, said four tournaments will continue its deal with the company, including the two Buick-sponsored events (regular sponsorship stops for Tiger Woods). That leaves other tournaments in a precarious spot. They compete with each other for the best field, but having to provide courtesy cars is another expense in their shrinking budgets, which likely means less money for their local charities. Daly set to finish season Down Under November 16 @ 11:32pm CT John Daly plans to end his troublesome year in Australia, where, in his last appearance six years ago, he was disqualified from a tournament for failing to sign his scorecard after throwing his ball and putter into a lake, according to CBSSportsline.com. Australian Masters officials said Monday that Daly would appear in the Huntingdale tournament at Melbourne from Nov. 27-30. Daly, without a U.S. PGA tour card, plans to play more tournaments on the European tour in 2009. He's entered in this week's Hong Kong Open, then he'll travel to the Australian Masters, which is also co-sanctioned with the European Tour as part of its Race to Dubai championship. Our View It's seldom been smooth sailing for Daly on his trips Down Under. In February, 1997 at the Heineken Classic, Daly shot a third-round 83 and then played the final round in just 2 hours, 10 minutes, angering tournament officials who had paid him a large appearance fee. In November 2002, playing a week after his mother died, Daly threw his putter and ball into the lake on the 18th green after a 78 in the Australian PGA, where he received a $200,000 appearance fee. He was disqualified for failing to sign his card and fined $5,600 and ordered to write an apology to a tour official he verbally abused. A scuba diver retrieved the ball and putter and it has been mounted in the pro shop at the Hyatt Regency Coolum course in Queensland state. Daly has not had his PGA Tour card since his 2006, when his two-year exemption expired from his last victory, the Buick Invitational in 2004. He made only five cuts in 17 starts on the PGA Tour this year and earned $56,000. Molder to return to the Tour in '09 November 16 @ 11:28pm CT Bryce Molder, a PGA Tour regular in 2007, will return to the 2009 PGA Tour after placing 23rd on the Nationwide Tour money list, according to ESPN.com. Our View Molder, 29, had four top-10s that included a second and a third and 10 top-25s while making 19 cuts in 27 starts. PROS: Driving accuracy ranks #32, GIR #23, putts-per-GIR #14, all-around 14th. CONS: Driving distance ranks 92nd. Molder earned nearly $900,000 on TOUR through 2007. He'll make cuts, put up good stats and reach the 120-125 area of the 2009 PGA Tour money list. JM Singh takes Singapore Open over Els, Harrington, others November 16 @ 11:27pm CT India's Jeev Singh won a nail-biting Singapore Open on Sunday after Padraig Harrington and Ernie Els came agonizingly close to taking the $5 million Asian Tour event to a playoff, according to the Associated Press. Singh, who virtually sealed the Asian order of merit title with the win, started the day five shots behind leader Chapchai Nirat of Thailand but three birdies on the front nine helped him card a 2-under-par 69 and winning total of 7-under 277. Els and three-time major champion Harrington finished one stroke back. Our View Harrington looked certain to force a playoff after a stunning fairway wood gave him the chance of birdie at the final hole, but the Irishman's 5-foot putt leaked across the face of the cup. Singh won $792,500 and became the first player on the Asian Tour to win more than $1 million in a single season. His earnings soared to more than $1.4 million with the Singapore victory. Phil Mickelson faded Sunday with an ugly triple-bogey 8 and finished the five shots behind Singh. Local favorite Lam Chih Bing was not a factor, shooting 8-over 79.
