The Bearcat Blitz: Pittsburgh Pregame
by Chris Murdico
11/18/2008 11:03:00 PM
The River City Rivalry comes to Nippert Stadium Saturday night when the No. 19 Cincinnati Bearcats (8-2, 4-1) take on the No. 20 Pittsburgh Panthers (7-2, 3-1). This has been a one-sided rivalry with Pittsburgh taking all seven contests. If the Bearcats were to win it would be the first time ever that they will have in their possession the Victory Bell (from the rivalry game with Miami (OH)), the Keg of Nails (rivalry with Louisville) and the 46-inch tall, 96 pound River City Rivalry Trophy.
Both teams are coming off wins over Louisville. Pittsburgh beat the Cardinals 41-7 two weeks ago. They had a bye last week. Cincinnati beat Louisville last week, 28-20. It was their first win over the Cards in six years. The winner of the game this weekend takes control of the BIG EAST and very well could end up winning the conference which would guarantee them a BCS bowl game.
The Bearcats have had back-to-back emotional games against West Virginia and Louisville. Both games were on the road and both went the Bearcats way and could very well help them in their game against PITT.
Cincinnati has made it to where they are at this point in the season thanks in large part to having the best passing attack in the BIG EAST. They average 253.9 yards passing per game. There was a question as to whether Tony Pike would play this week after leaving the Louisville game early due to injury, but it appears he is OK and will start this weekend. The Bearcats have used five total quarterbacks this season due to injuries. Pike has the majority of the starts and is second in the BIG EAST in passing efficiency (137.5). It helps that he has great receivers to throw to in Mardy Gilyard and Dominick Goodman.
While the Bearcats have a strong passing game, the Panthers have one of the best rushing attacks in the BIG EAST. They're led their sophomore running back, LeSean McCoy who has 1,043 yards on 210 carries. That's an average of 5.0 yards per attempt. He also has 16 touchdowns this season. The Bearcats have done well against the run for most of the season. They will have to keep McCoy in check and force junior quarterback Bill Stull to beat them. Stull has only thrown for 1,778 yards and five scores this season. He doesn't have a multi touchdown game this year. If the Bearcats can force the game onto his shoulders either by shutting down McCoy or by getting out ahead by a good margin on the scoreboard, their first win in this rivalry may finally come to pass.
The game kicks off at 7:15 pm and will air on ESPN2. Its the fourth game in a row to be broadcast on one of the ESPN networks. Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly delcared this game as the Ring of Red game. The Bearcats will sport their all red uniforms for the first time since 2003. Coach Kelly is asking for fans to participate by wearing red to the game as well. So remember to come early, be loud, wear RED!

Pujols, Pedroia Win MVP Honors
by Chris Murdico
11/18/2008 11:01:00 PM
Over the last two days the last two awards in baseball were given out. The Most Valuable Player honor is considered the greatest award in the game and this year it went to St. Louis Cardinals' first baseman, Albert Pujols, and Boston Red Sox second baseman, Dustin Pedroia.
This is Pujols' second MVP award as he won it back in 2006 also. He came up just short in 2006 when the Philadelphia Phillies' Ryan Howard was voted as the MVP. That was the same season the Cardinals won the World Series thanks in large part to Pujols. When Howard was given the award Pujols said that he didn't think any player whose team did not make the playoffs, which the Phillies did not in 2006, should win the award. Well, the Cardinals didn't make the playoffs this year, but of course that just mean that Pujols would retract what he said about Howard a couple years ago. And he did just that.
Pujols beat out Howard this time around receiving 18 of the possible 30 votes. Ryan Braun of the Milwaukee Brewers came in third in voting with Los Angeles Dodgers' newcomer Manny Ramirez finishing fourth. Pujols finished the 2008 season batting .357 with 37 homers and 116 RBIs playing with an elbow injury that required surgery. Howard his 48 homeruns and had 146 RBIs.
Pedroia became the first second baseman to win the AL MVP award in almost half a century (Nellie Fox of the Chicago White Sox, 1959). Last season he won the AL Rookie of the year in addition to a World Series championship ring. Earlier this month he also received his first Gold Glove award.
Batting .326 with 17 homeruns and 83 RBIs to go with 20 stolen bases, Pedroia beat out Minnesota Twins' first baseman Justin Morneau and teammate Kevin Youkilis. He received 16 of the 28 possible first place votes. Pedroia lead the AL in hits, runs and doubles and helped get the Red Sox to a wild-card berth. With this award, Pedroia becomes the 20th player to win both the Rookie of the Year award and an MVP honor in their career.

Recent News (11/17/2008 9:19:00 AM)
With
Antonio Chatman sidelined, WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh returned punts for
the Bengals Sunday against the Eagles.Housh took his first return 15
yards and had another 22-yard scamper, but it was called back by a
penalty. He had four other chances, but never got a hand on the ball as
Eagles P Sav Rocca was badly misfiring. Housh had not returned a punt
since 2004 and did a great job, but it's not clear if he'll be used
again in that role in Week 12.

Fantasy: Quick Hits
by Dan Clasgens
11/17/2008 5:44:00 PM
There were some interesting stroylines from Sunday in the world of fantasy football...
DYNAMIC DUO
Kurt Warner is getting all kinds of hype as a MVP canidate, and rightfully so, but it doesn't hurt that he throws it to two of the best receivers in football. Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald domintated the Seahawks on Sunday. The two combined for 23 catches on 30 targets and amassed 323 receiving yards. Both wideouts have made a home inside the top in our weekly rankings at receiver and that isn't going to change anytime soon.
WILLIE'S BACK
Steelers' running back Willie Parker played for the just the second time in six games and didn't appear to be limited by the shoulder harness he must finish the season wearing. Parker carried the ball 25 times for 115 yards and added a 4-yard reception. He ran well and even had a nice TD run, but it was called back due to penalty. With the Bengals on the slate in Week 12 Parker appears poised to be a stellar RB2 option moving forward.
ADDAI GOES OFF
Joseph Addai rewarded patient owners with a monster effort on Sunday vs. the Texans. The Colts' running back finished with 22 carries for 105 yards and a RuTD while catching 7 balls for 44 yards and a ReTD. The Colts' offense is coming on and Addai appears to be 100%. That couldn't be better news for owners that getting into the grind of a playoff stretch. The Texans' D has struggled lately, but the Browns, Bengals, and Lions still loom.
THE FALL OF DANIELS
Nobody has seen their fantasy vaule affected harded by the absence of Matt Schaub than Texans' tight end Owen Daniles. Prior to losing his quarterabck Daniels was on a tear and producing as good as any tight end in the league. In two games since Daniels has been a dud, catching just 2 balls for 27 yards and 0 TD's. Schaub is likely to miss at least two more games so you may want to look for other options until then.
DELHOMME A DUD
For the past two weeks I have endorsed Panthers' quarterback Jake Delhomme as viable starting fantasy option. However, following his second straight dismal display, this time against the Lions, I have lost faith in the Ragin' Cajun. He managed to complete just 10 of 19 passes for 98 yards and 1 TD against the Lions. That was on the heels of a disaster in Oakland. Keep in mind both of the opponents gave up huge rushing yardage, but with bye weeks over Delhomme should find a spot on your bench.

Graham Likely Out For Season
by Dan Clasgens
11/17/2008 4:58:00 PM
The Bucs won their game on Sunday, but they likely lost starting running back Earnest Graham for the season.
Graham sustained an ankle injury against Minnesota on Sunday when a defender fell on his ankle. Gruden said he does not expect Graham to play again this season.
“Earnest Graham’s ankle looks to be a serious injury and his status for the rest of the season is very much in question,” Gruden told the Tampa Tribune. “Geno Hayes [linebacker] hurt his knee and we’re obviously real concerned about that as well. Both of those guy’s season could be in jeopardy right now.”
Tampa Bay will be forced to play with Warrick Dunn, Cadillac Williams and Clifton Smith, plus Gruden said there is a possibility FB B.J. Askew will receive work at running back.
****
FANTASY TAKE: Dunn is likely the man to have here. The veteran rushed 20 times for 53 yards and caught four passes for 65 yards in Week 11's win and is quietly on pace for 1,000 yards. Cadillac Williams may take some carries eventually, but until further notice Dunn appears to be a legitimate RB2 option. Matchups ahead with the Lions and Saints should spell success!

The Controversy: Steelers' TD
by Dan Clasgens
11/17/2008 11:12:00 AM
from NowPublic.com
The ending of Sunday's Pittsburgh Steelers-San Diego Chargers game ended with a controversial call that reversed a Steelers touchdown. The negated touchdown didn't affect who won the outcome since the Steelers still won by a score of 11-10. But it did affect the point spread and essentially cost those who bet on the Steelers a total of $32 million.
In the dying seconds of the game, Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu intercepted a Chargers pass and ran it in for a touchdown, making the score 17-10. The referees, however, called a penalty on the play and took the touchdown off the scoreboard. Afterwards, officials admitted that they made a mistake at the end of the game.
What it did affect was something that the NFL rarely discusses: betting on NFL games. The Steelers were a five-point favorite over the Chargers. If the touchdown had been allowed to stand, the Steelers would have covered the point spread and anyone who bet on the Steelers would have won. Instead, the Steelers failed to cover the spread, so those who bet on the Steelers lost.
Since most bettors put their money on the Steelers to win, sports bookies ended up saving about $32 million that they would have had to pay out if Polamalu's touchdown was allowed.
--An estimated 100 million dollars was wagered worldwide on the Pittsburgh/San Diego game, according to RJ Bell of Pregame.com. Approximately 66% of that money was on the Steelers; with only 34% on the Chargers.
"If the touchdown was properly upheld, Steelers bettors would have won about 32 million dollars instead of losing big. This admittedly incorrect call resulted in a 64 million dollar swing in favor of the bookies," said RJ Bell of Pregame.com.
While millions of dollars were at stake, the issue was not brought up during the broadcast of the game nor in any post-game analysis, largely because of an unwritten rule that sports broadcasts avoid any mention of gambling.
During the game on CBS with Jim Nantz and Phil Simms, Nantz only alluded to the interest that the final play would draw for some. He certainly never mentioned the 4.5 point spread (with the home-standing Steelers as favorites) as the confusing ending was made even clunkier by the unspoken intrigue caused by the millions of dollars that were at stake for gamblers across America.
Although many gamblers were upset with the final score, it did make history. The Steelers-Chargers score marked the first time in history that an NFL game ended in a score of 11-10.

Pujols Picked Most Valuable
by Dan Clasgens
11/17/2008 10:31:00 AM
Albert Pujols claimed 18 of the 32 first placed votes and was named the National League's Most Valuable Player on Monday. The Cardinals' first baseman had a year worthy of recogintion - .357 BA, .462 OBP, .653 SLG, 37 HR, 116 RBI, and 100 runs scored in 148 games. Still, can the player be that valuable when their team doesn't even make the playoffs? In fact, the Cardinals finished in fourth place in their own division.
Pujos was still the RIGHT choice and the MVP to be named that did not make the playoffs since Andre Dawson did so as a Cub in 1987.
Ryan Howard finished second with 12 first-place votes, but when you consider that Pujols is a better fielder and runner and get down the core statistics it's not even close...
AVG OBP SLG
Pujols .357 .462 .653
Howard .251 .339 .543
Where Pujols' ranked:
• 1st in NL in SLG (.653)
• 1st in NL in OPS (1.114)
• 2nd in NL in AVG (.357)
• 2nd in NL in OBP (.462)
• 2nd in NL in BB (104)
• 4th in NL in RBI (116)
• 4th in NL in HR (37)
Where Howard ranked:
• 1st in NL in HR (48)
• 1st in NL in RBI (146)
• 6th in NL in SLG (.543)
• 9th in NL in R (105)
--Pujols was clearly a better all-around player. Howard was huge in leading his team to the playoffs, but where was he at in April and May?

Sabathia: Doing The Math
by Dan Clasgens
11/17/2008 10:05:00 AM
The New York Yankees have decided they want C.C. Sabathia and made a ridiculous silly bid to try to get them. Even if Sabathia wanted to take less money to stay in Milwaukee, the Players' Union is going to put pressure on him to not leave the money on the table. The Yankees have offered the big lefty $140 million over 6 years. Let's take a look at how those dollars and cents breakdown:
$140 million over 6 years
--$23.3 million per year
Has averaged 32 games per over last three seasons that equals...
--$718,750 per start
--125 pitches per start (rough estimate)
--$5750 per pitch
I am huge C.C. fan, but this money is unbelievable.

Duh-onovan McNabb And More
by Bret Sims
11/17/2008 8:46:00 AM
Donovan McNabb sounded more like DUH-onovan McNabb when he didn't know that regular season NFL games ended in a tie after one overtime. He commented what would the NFL do if a playoff game or Super Bowl ended in a time after the first OT. Someone needs to inform the genius that in the playoffs and Super Bowl the teams play until someone scores first.
Hey Donovan, here are some more rules that you might not know. A receiver has to have two feet in bounds, not one for the catch to count. When you fall down and no-one touches you, you can get up and run. A kickoff is a live ball and if the receiving team doesn't pick it up and the other team does it belongs to them.
It seems pretty clear to me that Vegas called the NFL and said "That TD better not count" at the end of the Steelers game and thus a $63 million swing back to the bookies and away from the betters happened. Don't tell me something fishy isn't going on there.

Bengals Kiss Their Sister
by Jimmy Dinsmore
11/16/2008 7:28:00 PM
Well for three weeks now, the Bengals have not lost a game. Which, for the Bengals is an accomplishment. However, in those three weeks, they've only won one game after tying with the Eagles today. It's the first tie in the NFL since 2002. Can we finally all agree that the NFL overtime procedure is broken and should be fixed. There should never be a tie in a professional game. Find a way to determine a winner. Five quarters with no team winning is bad for the game and bad for the fans.
Now, for the game. The play calling for the Bengals was atrocious in overtime. It was 3rd and 6 and they run a play up the middle. No way was Benson was going to get that against the Eagles defense. Then they put the fragile (and worthless) Chris Perry in for a small little dump pass with time running out. The Bengals only had one timeout and of course Perry got hurt which meant the Bengals had to burn that last timeout. This cost the team another play or two and there was no reason for Perry to be out there at that time or for his number to have been called at that point.

Week 12: Gators Continue to Bite Competition
by Chris Murdico
11/16/2008 1:55:00 PM
There weren't many changes in the polls this week as all but three ranked teams won their games. One difference of note from last week to this week is that the number of first place votes are now spread out between three teams, not just two. The votes are now split between Alabama (42), Texas Tech (21) and Florida (2). The reason for that is due to the Florida Gators domination of South Carolina this weekend.
The Gators have been rolling over the past couple months, going 6-0 now after their surprising loss to Mississippi. To think, had they not lost that game, the Gators would likely be the number one team in the country. With the 56-6 smackdown they laid on the Gamecocks this weekend, the Gators have put themselves in prime position to make the BCS championship game should they beat Alabama in the final game of the season and then go on to win the SEC championship game. If Texas Tech should falter against Oklahoma next weekend or in the Big 12 championship game should they make it there, that would help the Gators' chances as well.
Other than Florida stealing a couple of the first place votes in this week's AP Top 25, there weren't many moves up or down in the rankings. South Carolina fell back out of the Top 25 after losing to Florida. Florida State fell out as well after losing to Boston College Saturday night. With those two teams falling out of the Top 25, two teams must replace them. Those two teams would be Miami (FL) and Oregon. North Carolina fell from No. 20 to No. 25 after being beat by now No. 22 Maryland. The only other significant movement was Cincinnati and Pittsburgh moving up to No. 19 and No. 20 respectively.
The complete list of the AP Top 25 looks like this:
Alabama 11-0
Texas Tech 10-0
Florida 9-1
Texas 10-1
Oklahoma 9-1
USC 9-1
Penn State 10-1
Utah 11-0
Boise State 10-0
Ohio State 9-2
Oklahoma State 9-2
Missouri 9-2
Georgia 9-2
Ball State 10-0
TCU 9-2
BYU 10-1
Michigan State 9-2
LSU 7-3
Cincinnati 8-2
Pittsburgh 7-2
Oregon State 7-3
Maryland 7-3
Miami (FL) 7-3
Oregon 8-3
North Carolina 7-3
