Weekly Events & Riding Beginning Monday April 7th, you have the opportunity to join in the fun three nights a week starting at 6:00pm. As well, we have a handy-dandy printable 2008 Track Racing Schedule. (229kb PDF) Mondays are Timed Events Nights - Come out and compete against the clock in time trial events like the 200m, 500m, Kilo, Pursuit and Match Sprints. (More Info on Events.) Thursdays are Club Racing Nights - Join other cyclists in criterium-type group races like the points and scratch races, or the miss'n'out. There will usually be separate A, B & C class races. (More Info on Events.) Fridays are Open Track/Family Nights - Everyone is welcome to come out and give the track a try when there are no races scheduled. Experienced track cyclists will be on hand to introduce you and your family to the bike, the track and this exciting sport. Victoria Cycling League Race Series - the track is back for 2008! With six Points Races and two Pursuit nights to collect league series points. The bunch races are every 2nd Thursday, and the Pursuit nights will be May 5th and June 30th. Track bikes must be ridden for the Points races, but any bike (track, road or TT) can be used for the Pursuits. A's do 4km, B's do 3km and C's do 2km. Sundays we offer Learn to Race Sessions - Every 1st & 3rd Sunday afternoon, Apr thru Aug, from 12 noon to 3pm. All are welcome to come out to the track to learn to race! Track-savvy instructors will be on-hand to set you up on the bike (rental or bring your own fixed-gear bike), and get you aquainted with spinning circles! Stay-together practice races follow the introduction, and each session will finish with open races for each Category. Our Categories are A, B or C - A is Experienced, B is Intermediate and C is Beginner or New to Racing. Something for everyone! $5 per session, includes bike rental. Bring your helmet, shoes and pedals (if you have), as well as food and water, and the desire to ride fast! All are welcomed and encouraged, from the cycling novice to elite racers! Fees and Rentals We want everyone to try riding on the track, so we have a fleet of rental bikes and 4 ways for you to get started. (1) Licenced Drop-in: $5 to ride and $5 to rent a bike (with a valid Cycling BC racing licence) plus one-time $10 Cycling BC Club Affiliation Licence for non-UCI/Citizen racers. (2) Unlicenced Drop-in: $5 to ride and $5 to rent a bike + a $30 one-time fee which we pay to Cycling BC to licence and insurance for the year. (3) The Track Pack: $40 gets you on the track 5 times with a rental bike and covers your licence and insurance. An insanely good deal! (4) Annual Membership: $100 ($50 for under 18s) gets you unlimited riding for the entire year. Read on! (See our Track Etiquette file below as well.) Do I need to be an experienced cyclist to ride on the track? Absolutely not. We welcome people of all ages and riding experience to the velodrome. You do not need to be a competitive cyclist to enjoy riding on the track. Although track racing is all about speed, the track is also a great place to work out, improve your cycling abilities or just try your hand at a new sport. Isn't riding a track bike difficult and scary? Not at all. Like all new experiences track riding takes a little practice. But we find that new riders are comfortable on the bike after an easy half-hour introduction. Our track is outdoors and does not have steep banking, which makes it a great first-time track. Where is the Juan de Fuca Velodrome? We are located on the grounds of the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre on the Island Highway in Colwood. Once at the Recreation Centre, follow the signs for the Bear Mountain Arena and park in the arena parking lot. The clubhouse and track are up the short paved hill at the far end of the parking lot. What should I wear/bring to the track on my first visit? When you come to the track for the first time wear whatever you usually wear to ride your bike. Bring your helmet, cycling shoes and pedals (we have some pedals, but you will be more comfortable with your own). Look for the person with the sign-in clipboard. Be ready to enjoy yourself! I'm not interested in racing, why would I want to ride on the track? Riding on the track is fun whether or not you are racing. We encourage everyone from recreational cyclists to hardcore racers to try the track. Riding a fixed gear bike on the track is also an excellent way to improve both your cycling abilities and your fitness. No traffic, no potholes, no hills. I currently ride road/MTB/BMX, why would I want to ride track too? The track is an excellent environment in which to hone your cycling techniques and sport-specific fitness. The fixed gear can improve your pedaling efficiency and leg strength, the tight frame improves your handling, the uninterrupted circuit is great for lactate repeats and TT simulation. Also, a number of track races are similar to road/MTB/BMX races, but tend to be faster and more intense. Best of all: No traffic, no potholes, no stopsigns.
