“It has been an incredible month for us,” said Bellamy. “We closed a significant capital raise. If we close all the ad deals on the table – we will hit our first years number before we launch, we have added a ton of incredible programming, we will be announcing more distribution shortly and we are launching on Christmas Day!"
In the run up to the premier date, The Ski Channel has corralled an all-star lineup of corporate partners including Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications, Brighthouse Networks, Panasonic, Marquis Jets, Fender Guitars, Mirage Resorts, Rage Films, Ride Guide, World Heli Championships, Teva Mountain Games, Level One Productions, Skiers World, and Olympic Gold Medalist Jonny Moseley.
Bellamy also announced today that the network has additionally signed multi-year distribution agreements with two more major broadcast carriers -DIRECTV and Verizon FiOSTV. Verizon FiOSTV is currently available to more than 8.2 million homes in 14 states and DIRECTV, the nation's leading satellite television service provider, presents wireless television experience to more than 17.1 million customers.
The Ski Channel will be the only national television network devoted to the wide variety of year-round mountain activities such as skiing, snowboarding, hiking, biking, backpacking, climbing, etc., along with many off-slope activities. If you love skiing it's pretty much a given that you also love a lot more about the outdoors. The fact that The Ski Channel has extended its programming beyond its name, to cover what we all find great about the great outdoors, will guarantee it will be on the preset buttons of millions of remotes.
Oh! To sweeten the Christmas pie a little more, Steve Bellamy also announced a deal with Mountain Sports Media to broadcast on The Ski Channel some of the most famous films in skiing, from the Warren Miller Entertainment library, as well as Mountain Sports Media television series Thrills and Spills.
I'm not saying I won't be skiing on Christmas, but you can bet I'll be watching a little TV during the day.

However, with the huge increase of interest in Alpine Touring (AT) or Randonee skiing the sight of free heel skiers climbing up ski trails is not all that unusual anymore. Then again, when you wrap this obviously strenuous activity into a timed competition you've got yourself a race that pushes the contestants into the veritable realm of ironmen.
On December 27th, Sugarloaf, in Carrabassett Valley, ME, will be hosting the first ever Holiday Hill Climb. Hill Climb, you say? I know Randonee skiers speak lightly about their vertical accomplishments, but there's no way you can make this sound like a walk in the park. Think about this - competitors begin at the bottom of the SuperQuad chairlift and race more than a mile up the mountain to Bullwinkles Restaurant, climbing nearly 1,200 vertical feet and guess what - the race starts at 4:30pm almost in the dark!
Seriously, this race is open to all and according to Nina Silitch, Holiday Hill Climb organizer and member of the US Ski Mountaineering Team, "Night rando [Randonee] races are fun events that bring folks together on the slopes and then after at the post race meal." After the race, Sugarloaf is puting on a pasta dinner at the Sugarloaf Inn, an awards ceremony, and a slide show of randonee skiing and racing in the Alps.
For anyone wishing to participate in the race, but is new to the sport, Silitch and US Ski Mountaineering coach Pete Swenson will host a randonee clinic on the day of the race, from 10am to 12pm. Demo equipment will be available to those who preregister.
"In this race, we hope to help spread the word about this up and coming sport and encourage all levels, especially newcomers, to come and give it a try." Silitch said. "The clinic will give them a chance to learn about what equipment is needed and how to use it."
The Holiday Hill Climb is the first sanctioned race on the United States Ski Mountaineering Association (USSMA) 2009 provisional race calendar. Sugarloaf is alo scheduled to host the spring Sugarloaf Reggae Rando on April 11th.

If you are a hard core mogul masher, I don't have to explain a lot about the Dynastar Twisters. I've been reading some of the dedicated mogul skiing blogs and forums and one of the most mentioned ski is the Dynastar Twister. The secret to the Twister's long lasting competition fame is fiberglass sheets that are stacked in horizontal piles inside the core in a "leaf spring" formation to keep the ski twist-resistant while maintaining longitudinal flex. This ski was born so frisky Dynastar had to actually calm some of the mojo.
Always one of the most sought after pure mogul skis, even the older models are still a big seller on e-Bay - if you can find a pair that isn't gone before you can bid on it! Well, here's some good news for those bumpers still pining for the skinny Twister - a new Dynastar Twister Mogul Ski - Limited Edition is now available.
This Limited Edition comes 98-66-85mm in lengths 168, 175, and 182cm. As you can see, the Limited Edition is finished with some great Dynastar retro graphics that just might start some old hotdogger's knees aching from just looking at these bad boys. However, I'm told that the Limited Edition is being sold at only one shop in North America this year - Aspen East Ski Shop in Killington, VT. The skis are sold flat - i.e. no bindings - but you are going to love the price! One caveat when you buy a binding be sure to ask for a narrow (80mm) brake.
Before you gas up the VW sleeper van and head out climbing Rt 100, be aware that you can buy them online at the Aspen East online store.
