Equipment

Seek professional instructionWhy? Because incorrectly assembled equipment may malfunction and place the user in a critical situation. Get training in the correct methods of equipment use, and assembly, and selection. Don't launch an underinflatedor leaking kiteWhy? Because an underinflated kiteis much more difficult to control.Make sure your quick release isworkingWhy do I need a quick release, can'tI just let go?Sure you can let go but Kites havekept going for very long distances and you risk losing your kite and hurtingsome one else who may be hit by the bar or become entangled in or hurt bythe lines.Check your bridle linesWhy? Not only can your lines be tangledin obvious ways they can be "inside out" which is not obvious but whichnonetheless makes the kite at best semi-controllableDon't fly a kite that seems sluggishor difficult to controlWhy? Because the kite is probablyunderinflated or has twisted bridle lines see aboveUse short lines for learningWhy? Because longer lines are morelikely to fall in someone else's path and injure them and because the longerthe lines the faster the kite can go thus generating more apparent windspeed and more power and making it harder to control.Use relatively thick linesWhy? Because thicker lines are lesslikely to hurt you or someone else and are easier to untangle if you get"all wrapped up"Always use a thick leader lineto connect to the barWhy? Because people have been seriouslyhurt by the line when they ran the line directly to the bar BE TOTALLY FAMILIAR WITH YOUR OWN PARTICULAR SAFETY SYSTEM, AND PRACTICE USING IT IN NON-CRITICAL SITUATIONS.

Launching

Seek professional instructionWhy? Get training in the correct launching methods before launching any kite. Stay away from crowded beachesWhy? Kites need a lot of room to move, and to be operated safely. Stay away from crowded beaches and other water users. Stay clear of fishermenWhy? Because fisherman and especiallyspear fisherman who not only don't like getting run over but are also muchbetter armed than you areObserve kitesurfing zonesWhy? Because even if you’re the bestyou still freak our the windsurfers and there are lots more of them thantheir are of us… at least this year.Do not ask or allow someone whois not familiar with kites to help you launch or landWhy? Because they have no idea ofthe power of the kite, the risk of entanglement or the ability of the linesto hurt themCorollary; learn how to self launchby weighting kite with sand and how to safely land by releasing the quickrelease near shoreWhy because even if you usually flywith someone knowledgeable who can help you launch someday the weatherwill be perfect and you will want to self launch (same with landing)Tell tourist kitesurfers aboutthe launch/no launch zonesWhy? Because we all want to keep ouraccessAsk some one knowledgeable to assistyou if possibleWhy? Because even if you want to selflaunch it's good to have someone else keep an eye out for children etc. When launching assume you WILLbe hit by a gust of swirling windwhich WILL suddenly pull you in an unexpected direction and make sure that when that happens neitheryou nor anyone else will be hurtWhy? Because gusts happen and many of the accidentsthus far were caused when people didn't expect the unexpected and weredragged into rocks etc. before they could reactAlways use a quick releaseSee aboveDo not leave unattended kites attachedto lines even if you have properly weighted the kite with sandWhy? Because either some little kidor a dog or a curious tourist or a giant gust will launch your kite andsomeone will get hurt

While Sailing

Maintain a safety buffer zonebetween yourself and othersWhy? Because every once in awhileyou're bound to be a little off200 foot zone around divers and theirbuoysLook before making a turn or jumpingWhy? Because you may put yourself in the path of another rider. Check that all directions (including straight up) are clear, before attempting any maneuver.

Obvious

Always assume that a crashedkite will relaunch unexpectedlyWhy? Because an amazing number ofpeople have been absolutely amazed when their kite suddenly took off despitebeing tangled, inside out, partially inflated what have you.If the kite appears hopelessly tangledor deflated never swim toward itWhy? Because if the kite takes offand you get tangled in the lines it could put you in a life threateningsituationIf you need to swim in:1. depower the kite by releasing the bar (not the leash)2. pull yourself to the kite whilewinding the uneven lines onto the bar, or climbing one line only3. Hold the kite and self-rescue to shore. Why? Because if the kite has two linesattached it can generate power. Even if it is so tangled it can't takeof with two line attached you can get tangled and it can generate power,a very good way to get hurtCarry a safety knife that willcut lines but not youHow come? Because even if you aregood enough or lucky enough to never need it maybe some day you will rescuesomeone else.Outgoing kitesurfer has right ofway over incoming kitesurferWhy? Someone has got to. (from the wavesailing rule).Wear as much flotation as you canstandWhy? You will float better, and it acts like padding.Never sail further out than youcan swimAssume that today will be the dayyou get to swim in from the farthest point out you goWhy? Because you may have to let go of your kite at any time.Don't tease the sharksBecause you look like a yummy youngseal to themAlways consult your equipment's user manualSafety systems are many and varied. There are specific recommendations for the use of different systems.
