2008 Men's NCAA Division One Regional Cross-Country Previews
LetsRun.com coaching guru John Kellogg used all of his OCD powers to break down all 9 NCAA regions and amazingly comes up with top 25 individual predictions for each and every one of them. We know there are bound to be mistakes (namely, completely overlooking an obvious stud or two, or including a D2 athlete by mistake), but we'd love to see you do a better job yourself.
D-I Championships Ready To Race
INDIANAPOLIS---The NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee announced today the team and individual qualifiers for the 2008 Division I Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships.
In order to be eligible to participate in the championships, teams and individuals qualified in their respective NCAA regions.
Thirty-one teams were selected to participate in each championship. The top two, seven-person teams automatically qualified from each of the nine regions, for a total of 18 teams. Thirteen additional teams were selected at-large.
Thirty-eight individuals were selected to participate in each championship through an automatic qualifier and at-large selection process. All individual qualifiers finished in the top 25 in their region.
Indiana State University will host the Championships, November 24, at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course located at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center in Terre Haute, Indiana. The women's race will begin at approximately 12:08 p.m. Eastern time, followed by the men's race at 12:48 p.m. Both championship races will be broadcast live on CBS College Sports Network and streamed online via NCAA.com.
San Antonio Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Profile: Brian Sell
The inaugural Rock 'n' Roll San Antonio Marathon is scheduled for Nov. 16. The event will draw the largest field of any marathon in the city's history and will include elite runners from around the world. This is part of a series profiling runners to watch.
At Haverford, Tossing It All in Name of Teaching
Holding his award in his hands, Tom Donnelly, Haverford College's longtime men's cross-country and track coach, walked to the banks of the Mississippi River and tossed the trophy in the water. This was 2001, but it could have been any of several years that Donnelly has won an N.C.A.A. Division III Coach of the Year award.
Longtime USATF contributor Dr. C. Harmon Brown dies
Known worldwide as a pioneer in sports science and medicine, Dr. C. Harmon Brown died from cancer on Tuesday, November 11. He was 78.
A well-respected author, coach, professor, speaker, endocrinologist, team administrator and track meet official, Dr. Brown, a resident of San Mateo, Calif., served the sport of track and field in countless ways.
Agency for Cycling Ethics (ACE) goes under

But today there is news from the anti-doping front. The Agency for Cycling Ethics, or ACE, has closed. Folded. Gone out of business, apparently due to financial problems. They were a company set up to take independent samples from athletes and report the results back to the coaches and teams. Their website has been shut down, so we do not know all the teams they were providing services for, but ACE had such big clients as Team Columbia, Garmin-Chipotle, and BMC racing, to name a few.
Two world records fall at World Cup swimming meet in Stockholm
STOCKHOLM, Sweden - South African swimmer Cameron van der Burgh set his third world short-course record in four days at a World Cup swimming meet Tuesday.
Also, Peter Marshall regained the 100-metre backstroke record in 49.94 seconds, breaking American countryman Ryan Lochte's time of 49.99 from the 2006 world championships. Lochte took the record from Marshall. Another American, Randall Bal, came second in 50.30 seconds.
Unbelievable Mayhem At D2 West Regionals As Leaders Are Directed In Wr
The 2008 West Regional will be one that is remembered for ages as it was a classic. Course officials directed the leading men runners in the wrong direction and when they realized it, the runners were forced to scramble through woods and try to pass the rest of the field in a path that was only wide enough for two or three people to catch back up. Amazingly, the main pack slowed down Tour De France style to let the big dogs get back in the position that they should be in. 
Olympic great Larry James dies
A double medalist at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, Larry James also set world records and won NCAA titles during his track career. James won the silver medal in the 400 meters with his time of 43.97 seconds at the 1968 Olympics, bettering the existing world record but placing him second behind teammate and fellow Hall of Famer Lee Evans (43.86). James added a gold medal at the Mexico City Games by running the third leg on the U.S. 4x400m relay team, which set a world record of 2:56.16 seconds, which lasted until 1992.
Goucher named Athlete of the Week
INDIANAPOLIS - Kara Goucher has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after running the fastest marathon debut ever by an American woman at the ING New York City Marathon Sunday in New York City.

Emotional return to New York for Olympian Kara Goucher
Kara Goucher fought back tears at a news conference this week when she talked about her connection with her native New York City.
"It's just as a little girl, you want your family to be together," said Goucher, 30. "And this is where my family was together.
Days before her 4th birthday, Goucher's family was torn apart when her father, Mirko Grgas of Queens, was killed in a car accident by a drunken driver. Shortly after, Goucher's family moved to Duluth, Minn., where she grew up.

Tempe Runner Tim Keller Defends Title At Twilight Zone Tower of Terror
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla.- (Oct 26, 2008) - Tim Keller (Tempe, Ariz.) wins the 2008 Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 13K at Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Fla. Keller, 27, defended his title as he finished the 8.1 mile course in 46:56. Keller defeated the nearest competitor by 11 seconds although he was over three minutes off last year's pace (43:31). Michael Creason, from Charlotte, N.C., who won his age group (35-39) last year and finished fifth overall, crossed the line in second with a time of 47:07. The 37-year-old improved on his time from the 2007 race by over a minute and a half (48:43). Nathan Buttrick, 28 of Boston, Mass., finished third with a time of 47:28.

Now that the Olympics have ended, athletes must reevaluate their goals. For Kara Goucher, that means moving up to the marathon distance. Goucher, 30, announced last month that she planned to make her debut November 2 at the New York City Marathon. 
Performance panel's report could produce changes for USA Track & Field

USA Triathlon Age Group and Elite National Championships Headed to Tus
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (October 23, 2008) -- USA Triathlon (USAT) is proud to announce that Tuscaloosa, Ala., will host the 2009 and 2010 Age Group and Elite National Championships.
The 2009 event is scheduled for August 22.
Tuscaloosa seems to have become the hotbed for triathlon racing in recent years, at least as far as USAT events are concerned. USAT held the 2007 and 2008 Collegiate National Championships there, and also brought the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials to the city this past April.

Course Records Fall At The 2008 Cross Country Pre-Nationals
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The eyes of cross country enthusiasts around the country were fixed on the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind., on Saturday as the best collegiate men's and women's teams in the country participated in the annual Pre-Nationals Meet. Two course records were broken in impressive fashion and some of the best teams in the country lived up to their billing on what proved to be on a perfect day for racing.
Contador confirms he'll ride with Astana in 2009
MADRID, Spain (AP)-Alberto Contador confirmed Saturday he will ride for Astana in 2009 after the Spaniard's future was put in doubt when Lance Armstrong joined the Kazahk team.
Contador, the 2007 Tour de France champion, met with Astana boss Johan Bruyneel following weeks of uncertainty over his future since the arrival of Armstrong, a seven-time Tour winner.
