CRANKSKINS.com BEACON CYCLOCROSS – FAMILIAR FACES IN FRONTSaturday, November 8th, 2008November 8, 2008; Conshohocken, PA, USA: The MAC Powered by SRAM Cyclocross Series visited New Jersey today for the Beacon Cyclocross and it’s iconic “Amphitheater of Pain”. In a switch from past years, the event was run under domestic sanctioning instead of its traditional UCI sanction. But the lack of international stature didn’t seem to hurt, as the event drew record entries and the largest Elite fields in years, which were won by the C3-Sollay.com duo of Wes Schempf and Laura Van Gilder. One change from past years that was not planned for, nor expected, was rain. Weather forecasts were unanimous in their prediction of a dry, unseasonably warm day. But by mid morning, as the rain fell ever harder, it became obvious that the precipitation was not just a passing shower. The ground in Bridgeton, where the race is held, is typical South Jersey sandy soil, with an emphasis on “sandy”. By the end of their races, most riders looked like Shake ‘n Bake chicken, with a heavy coating of granulated grey sand. For many riders, the effect was not merely the result of road spray. For the first time, organizers dug up the beach run with a roto-tiller to soften the sand and make it un-rideable. The result was a variety of crashes, pile-ups and near misses, including a stylish barrel roll by Wade Hess in the category 2/3/4 Men’s race. Hess, of all people, should have been better prepared for the softer sand since, as the promoter of the event, he was the person responsible for making the call to bring in the roto-tiller in the first place. [View Full Story]GARDEN STATE MACMonday, November 3rd, 2008November 3, 2008; Conshohocken, PA, USA: The MAC Powered by SRAM Cyclocross Series makes its annual swing through the state of New Jersey this weekend, November 8 and 9. The two races will encompass two distinct areas of “the Garden State”. The weekend starts with one of the iconic course features of American cyclocross racing -- the “Amphitheater of Pain” at the Beacon Cyclocross in the South Jersey town of Bridgeton. Then the series moves north along New Jersey’s famed turnpike to Jamesburg for the 10th annual HPCX. The course for Saturday’s Beacon Cyclocross is unique and is a personal favorite of many racers. The fast, hard, sand-packed roads though the forest are very different from the typical east-coast grass. But even though the course is considered one of the fastest cyclocross courses in the country, it also boasts two of the biggest and slowest obstacles. The beach run, which would be the biggest obstacle at almost any cyclocross race, is 79 meters long and has two right-angle corners. But at the Beacon Cyclocross, it is overshadowed (literally) by the “Amphitheater of Pain”, a three-story outdoor theater. It would be a formidable obstacle even if the racers used the access stairs, but the organizers instead route the course through the terraced seating area where each step is at least two feet high. Compounding the difficulty is that the finish is a mere 45 seconds from the top of the amphitheater, making it important tactically was well as physically. [View Full Story]KELLY BENEFITS STRATEGIES CYCLOCROSS AT ROCKBURNSunday, November 2nd, 2008November 2, 2008; Elkridge, Maryland, USA: Clear skies and a revised course layout greeted a large field of racers to the second edition of the Kelly Benefits Strategies Cyclocross at Rockburn. And while the weather was an improvement from last year’s inaugural edition, it was the revised 3.3 km course that drew rave reviews, with many elite riders commenting that it was their favorite course of the year. With a long climb and sections of wooded trail interspersed with typical east-coast technical sections, the course favored no particular kind of rider and lent itself to tactical racing. In the Women’s race, a three-woman break developed almost from the gun. Defending race champion Betsy Shogren (SoBe/Cannondale), Melanie Swartz (Velo Bella / Kona) and perpetual contender Arley Kemmer (Hub Racing) pulled away decisively and left no doubt that the winner would come from that group. Melanie Swartz, who had won the previous day’s MAC Powered by SRAM race by patiently riding third wheel, was the early animator. All three riders swapped the lead, but Shogren clearly had a preference to stay out front and run her own lines and both Kemmer and Swartz were content to let her. Kemmer attacked out of the sand pit, but the move was quickly covered and the three rode as one toward the finish. Just before the bell, Kemmer crashed when she slid out her front wheel. She recovered quickly, but the 30 meter gap with one lap to go made it a match sprint between Swartz and Shogren. One lap later, Shogren led-out the sprint and won from the front, but the race had probably been won a kilometer earlier and out of sight. “I wanted to attack on the long downhill,” explained Swartz afterward, “but there was a lapped rider there and it was too sketchy to try to pass her like that.” Swartz was actually making ground on race-winner Shogren, “but I ran out of gear.” [View Full Story]NEW WINNERS AT FAIR HILSaturday, November 1st, 2008November 1, 2008; Conshohocken, PA, USA: On a warm day under clear skies, Melanie Swartz and Ryan Dewald stormed to victory at the Wayne Scott Xross in Fair Hill Maryland on Saturday. The long and relatively flat course through the Cecil County Fairgrounds was fast and technical with few opportunities to recover. In the Elite Men’s race, Greg Wittwer (ALAN North America) took a lead on the first lap and made the rest of the field, and himself, suffer. “I was going real hard,” he said after the race. “I saw from the earlier races that the races were staying together in the front and I wanted to spread it out. Wittwer stayed away for two laps, before Ryan Dewald (Battley Harley Davidson, Stephan Kincaid (Fuji) and Andy Wulfkuhle (C3-Sollay.com) joined him to form the lead group. Behind them, a battle of the road pros saw Jonny Sundt (KBS/Medifast) and Bobby Lea (T.EA.M. Fuji) engaged in their own turf that would eventually be won by Sundt. Meanwhile, C3-Sollay’s Michael Gallagher was on a mad chase through the field after flatting on the first lap that eventually netted him eighth place. Following a month of UCI racing in Ohio and Kentucky, the Zipp OVCX Tour returns to the Cincinnati area for the second half of its 2008 season on November 2 with the Gun Club Cyclocross. Held at the Sycamore Pheasant Gun Club in Miamiville Ohio, it’s not hard for spectators around the course to determine when the action has begun. The event traditionally starts each race with a blast from a 16 gauge over-under shotgun. Presumably, the shotgun start eliminates jump starts as well. “When we say hole-shot, we mean hole-SHOT!” laughs race promoter John Gatch, “the Voice of the Zipp OVCX Tour.” “But the shotgun start isn’t the only special thing about having a cross race at a gun club. The Gun Club Race sets the standard for hospitality with amenities such as bike wash, showers, and a huge lodge with a fireplace and a projection screen showing cyclocross videos. And then there’s our famous concessions, where one can gorge on grilled meats, sweets, fruit and coffee with all the proceeds going to support the St. Thomas Episcopal Church's youth group Journey to hood. The course ain't too bad either from a racing and spectating standpoint.” [View Full Story] Results Pictures BCE offers something for every rider.
