After the Second World War, the national football team was subsumed into the team of |Czechoslovakia, and for over fifty years Slovakia played no matches as an independent country. During this period they contributed several key players to the Czechoslovak team, including the majority of the team that won the |1976 European Championships. After the division of Czechoslovakia, the Slovak Football Association (Slovenský futbalovy zväz) was founded in 1993, and has been affiliated to both FIFA and UEFA since the same year. In this time Slovakia have never qualified for the Finals stages of any international football competition.Slovakia's first official international after regaining independence was a 1-0 victory in Dubai over the United Arab Emirates on 2 February 1994. Their match back on Slovakian soil was the 4-1 defeat against Croatia in Bratislava on 20 April 1994. Slovakia suffered their biggest defeat since independence (6-0) on 22 June 1995, in Mendoza, against Argentina. Their biggest wins (7-0) have come against Liechtenstein in 2004 and San Marino in 2007.Slovakia played in a major championship as an independent team for the first time in Euro '96 qualifying, but finished in third place in their qualifying group, behind Romania and France, having recorded wins against Poland, Israel and Azerbaijan, twice. In the 1998 World Cup qualifiers, Slovakia finished fourth in their six-team group with five wins, one draw and four defeats.[edit] European Championship record1960 to 1992 - see Czechoslovakia1996 to 2008 - Did not qualify[edit] World Cup record1930 to 1994 - See Czechoslovakia1998 to 2006 - Did not qualify[edit] Results in 2008DateHome TeamScoreAway Team6 February 2008 Hungary1-1Slovakia 26 March 2008 Slovakia1-2Iceland 20 May 2008 Turkey1-0Slovakia 24 May 2008 Switzerland2-0Slovakia 20 August 2008 Slovakia0-2Greece 6 September 2008 Slovakia2-1Northern Ireland 10 September 2008 Slovenia2-1Slovakia 11 October 2008 San Marino1-3Slovakia 15 October 2008 Slovakia2-1Poland [edit] FIFA World Cup qualification This article or section contains information about a future sporting event or team.It is likely to contain information of a speculative nature and the content may change as the event approaches and more information becomes available.Main article: 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification - UEFA Group 3TeamPldWDLGFGAGDPts Slovakia430185+39 Poland421164+27 Slovenia421153+27 Northern Ireland411254+14 Czech Republic31112204 San Marino300319−80 –14 Oct '0910 Oct '099 Sep '091 Apr '091 – 0 0 – 0–28 Mar '094 – 09 Sep '091 Apr '09 2 – 15 Sep '09–1 Apr '0914 Oct '091 – 1 19 Nov '0811 Feb '090 – 2–1 – 314 Oct '09 5 Sep '092 – 12 – 16 Jun '09–10 Oct '09 28 Mar '092 – 09 Sep '0912 Aug '092 – 1–[edit] Current squadDate: November 19, 2008Venue: Pod Dubňom, ŽilinaOpponent: LiechtensteinNo.Pos.PlayerDoB (Age)CapsGoalsClubGKJán MuchaDecember 5, 1982 (1982-12-05) (age 25)30 Legia Warszawa1GKŠtefan SeneckýJanuary 6, 1980 (1980-01-06) (age 28)100 Ankaraspor4DFMarek ČechJanuary 26, 1983 (1983-01-26) (age 25)303 West Bromwich AlbionDFMarián ČišovskýNovember 2, 1979 (1979-11-02) (age 29)70 FC TimişoaraDFPeter DoležajApril 5, 1981 (1981-04-05) (age 27)20 Spartak Trnava3DFPeter PekaríkOctober 30, 1986 (1986-10-30) (age 22)50 MŠK Žilina10DFRadoslav ZabavníkSeptember 16, 1980 (1980-09-16) (age 28)321 Terek Grozny5MFBalázs BorbélyOctober 2, 1979 (1979-10-02) (age 29)110 FC Timişoara17MFMarek HamšíkJuly 27, 1987 (1987-07-27) (age 21)173 S.S.C.
