8.300 athletes from 103 countries worldwide made the 4th Busan TAFISA World Sport for All Games the largest international Sport for All event ever. For six days delegations invited by the Busan Organizing Committee and TAFISA met in Busan, Korea presenting more than 150 different traditional sports and games from across the world. Never before such a wide variety of sports cultures had been displayed at one place making Busan truly the global capital of Sport for All between September 26 and October 2. The unique program included at the same time competitions and presentations of traditional games and sports.The list of disciplines ranged from various martial arts and folks dances over archery and gateball to kite flying and yoga. Moreover, the introduction of x-sports and e-sports into the program made the event even more attractive for the young generation. IOC, UNESCO and ICSSPE were the major patrons of the event. For TAFISA president Dr. Shang-Hi Rhee “the event was a wonderful opportunity to enhance mutual understanding through the language of sports, overcoming the barriers of religion, nationality and ethnicity.” Special highlight of the Games was the Opening Ceremony on September 26 which presented a unique mixture of traditional games from all continents. 12.000 spectators incl. guests of honor from TAFISA, IOC, UNESCO, Korean government etc. witnessed an outstanding spectacle of different music, movement cultures, national costumes and Korean history. click to enlarge

Launch of TAFISA World Walking Day 2008 The Busan Games also provided an excellent platform for the launch of the WWD 2008. On September 28 more than 20.000 participants joined this unique event and walked across the famous Gwangan Grand Bridge in Busan. With each participant raising one US $ for UNICEF the WWD for the first time served a special funding benefit. At the same time walking tours took place in around 70 TAFISA member countries making this year’s WWD on the occasion of the Busan Games the largest walking event that has ever taken place in the world.

A historic moment of the Busan Games took place at the Beomeo temples: UNESCO, TAFISA and Busan city jointly signed the Busan Appeal on the “Preservation and Development of Traditional Games and Sports”. The document clearly states the organizations understanding that only with the knowledge of our past and history we will be able to understand the present status and the future development of the global Sport for all movement. click to enlarge

ASFAA Congress The academic aspect of the Busan Games was documented by the Congress of the Asiania Sport for All Association (ASFAA) that serves as the regional TAFISA body for Asia and Oceania. Chinese ASFAA president Feng opened the Congress by pointing out that his organization above all will fight obesity and inactivity amongst people as the major contemporary challenge for Sport for All and physical activity. Host City 2012During the Closing Ceremony the host country for the next TAFISA World Sport for All Games in 2012 was announced: Lithuania, the European country on the Baltic Sea, with the city of Siauliai will be the venue for 2012. The city received the TAFISA flag from Busan to fly it for the next four years in Lithuania. click to enlarge

This year more than 60 countries worldwide will participate at the WWD at least with one national walking event. The list of countries ranges from France and Poland via Togo and Kuwait up to China and Australia. All in all more than one million people are expected to actively participate at this year’s WWD. As part of the longstanding cooperation between TAFISA and the Lithuanian Association “Sport for All” a meeting of both organizations took place in Vilnius on July 25. President Algis Vasiliauskas welcomed Wolfgang Baumann, TAFISA secretary general, and Margit Budde, manager of the TAFISA office, for an exchange of experiences and projects in Sport for All.
