It has never advanced to the finals of any major international competition. For the Euro 2004, Iceland were led by Asgeir Sigurvinsson topping the group table for a while, with 4 wins and even held Germany to a 0–0 draw in Reykjavík, however both Germany and Scotland had a game in hand to them and both used them to their maximum potential, with Scotland beating Lithuania and Germany beat Scotland in Germany's penultimate game. Iceland failed to grind a result in their final game against Germany, and Scotland pipped them to a play-off place. Iceland have failed to match this since, finishing on just 4 points for the 2006 World Cup qualifiers and 8 points from their Euro 2008 qualifying campaign.Iceland were knocked out in the quarter finals of the 2001 Millennium Super Cup to a Chilean Football League XI, this was following a 3-0 victory over hosts India.Perhaps its most notable match was a friendly against Estonia on 24 April 1996 in Tallinn. During the second half of this match, Eiður Guðjohnsen entered as a substitute for his father Arnór. This marked the first time that a father and son played in the same international match. Another landmark for Icelandic football was the 2–0 upset victory over Italy in a friendly at Laugardalsvöllur, 18 August 2004[1] with 20,204 fans in attendance, an Icelandic record.[2]Contents1 World Cup record2 European Championship record3 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification4 Current Squad5 Notable results6 Famous players6.1 Most capped Icelandic players6.2 Top Icelandic goalscorers6.3 National coaches7 References8 External links//[edit] World Cup record1930 to 1950 – Did not enter1954 – Entry not accepted by FIFA1958 – Did not qualify1962 to 1970 – Did not enter1974 to 2006 – Did not qualify[edit] European Championship record1960 – Did not enter1964 – Did not qualify1968 – Did not enter1972 – Did not enter1976 to 2008 – Did not qualify[edit] 2010 FIFA World Cup qualificationTeamPldWDLGFGAGDPts Netherlands330051+49 Scotland31112204 Iceland411246−24 FYR Macedonia310223−13 Norway302123−12 –1 – 06 Jun '095 Sep '091 – 2 10 Jun '09–1 – 26 Jun '091 – 0 2 – 01 Apr '09–10 Jun '0928 Mar '09 2 – 29 Sep '090 – 1–12 Aug '09 1 Apr '095 Sep '099 Sep '090 – 0–6 September 200817:00Norway 2 – 2 IcelandUllevaal Stadion, OsloAttendance: 17,254Referee: Alon Yefet (ISR)Steffen Iversen 36', 50'Heidar Helguson 39'Eidur Gudjohnsen 69'10 September 200818:30Iceland 1 – 2 ScotlandLaugardalsvollur, ReykjavikAttendance: 10,000Referee: Serge Gumienny (BEL)Eidur Gudjohnsen 77' (pen.)Kirk Broadfoot 18'Barry Robson 59'11 October 200818:45Netherlands 2 – 0 IcelandDe Kuip, RotterdamAttendance: 37,500Referee: Trefoloni Matteo (ITA)Joris Mathijsen 15'Klaas-Jan Huntelaar 64'15 October 200818:00Iceland 1 – 0 FYR MacedoniaLaugardalsvollur, ReykjavikAttendance: 5,527Referee: Dereli Selçuk (TUR)Veigar Páll Gunnarsson 16'1 April 2009TBAScotland – IcelandHampden Park, Glasgow6 June 2009TBAIceland – NetherlandsLaugardalsvollur, Reykjavik10 June 2009TBAFYR Macedonia – IcelandSkopje City Stadium, Skopje5 September 2009TBAIceland – NorwayLaugardalsvollur, Reykjavik[edit] Current SquadCalled up for the 2010 World Cup qualifiers against Macedonia and Holland on October 2, 2008.No.Pos.PlayerDoB (Age)CapsGoalsClubGKÁrni Gautur Arason7 May 1975640 Odd GrenlandGKGunnleifur Gunnleifsson14 July 197550 HKDFHermann Hreiðarsson11 July 1974815 PortsmouthDFIndriði Sigurðsson12 October 1981401 LynDFKristján Örn Sigurðsson7 October 1980342 BrannDFGrétar Rafn Steinsson9 January 1982284 BoltonDFRagnar Sigurðsson19 June 1984100 IFK GöteborgDFBirkir Már Sævarsson11 November 1984120 BrannDFBjarni Ólafur Eiríksson28 March 198290 ValurMFBrynjar Björn Gunnarsson16 October 1975674 ReadingMFStefán Gíslason15 March 1980270 BrøndbyMFEmil Hallfreðsson29 June 1984201 RegginaMFHelgi Valur Daníelsson13 July 198170 ElfsborgMFTheódór Elmar Bjarnason4 March 198790 LynMFPálmi Rafn Pálmason9 November 198480 StabækMFDavíð Þór Viðarsson24 April 198450 FHMFAron Gunnarsson22 April 198980 Coventry CityMFArnór Smárason7 September 198820 HeerenveenFWEiður Guðjohnsen15 September 19785522 BarcelonaFWHeiðar Helguson22 August 1977427 BoltonFWGuðmundur Steinarsson20 September 197920 KeflavíkFWVeigar Páll Gunnarsson21 March 1980233 Stabæk[edit] Notable resultsDateHomeResultAway11 June 1977Iceland1–0Northern Ireland24 September 1980Turkey1–3Iceland9 September 1987Iceland2–1Norway17 July 1991Iceland5–1Turkey25 September 1991Iceland2–0Spain19 August 1998Iceland4–1Latvia5 September 1998Iceland1–1France14 October 1998Iceland1–0Russia1 September 2001Iceland3–1Czech Republic19 October 2003Iceland0–0Mexico18 August 2004Iceland2–0Italy17 August 2005Iceland4–1South Africa2 September 2006Northern Ireland0–3Iceland8 September 2007Iceland1–1Spain12 September 2007Iceland2–1Northern Ireland[edit] Famous players This is a list of famous or notable sports persons with no clear inclusion or exclusion criteria.
