First off, putting sugar water (coke, or pepsi) will work but it is a bad way to go, as it is very short term, and it builds up and you have to take off your pads to clean them and the rims quickly. Plus it will ruin the finish on your rims.
Here is a Pro rundown on 990 style brakes.
First off, teflon lined cables. Use Tri-Flow inside the cables, and MAKE SURE they don't bind. If they bind, all your work is worthless.
Get good levers that don't flex. Tech 77's are good.
Look at the calipers, do they flex? Or are they tight? They should not move up and down, they should be very smooth opening and closing.
If that is not the case then, take off your brakes, (making sure you don't mix up the springs, there is a left and a right spring, or loose the washers). Clean them till they are spotless, and put some light grease on the top of the brake mount, and on the shaft of the brake mount, and any washers.
Slide the arm back on, and put on the spring and dust cap. Now put some more grease on the bolt and start to tighten it. When you have it on don't tighten it up just yet, and do the other side. When both sides are done they should move easily with little effort.
Now, this is the hardest part, You have to set the tension of the springs so that they are the same. I Turn the bolt until the pads touch the rim and then I turn them about 1/4 more. They key to this part is that they are the exact same, otherwise one side will hit first and that will make them not work as well. You have to have a allen wrench and a wrench on the set bolt at the same time to set them correctly.
Then tighten everything down. Making sure your cable bolt is super tight, you don't want that to slip and ruin all your work.
If they are new cables, then in a few hours you will have to reset everything because the cables will stretch.
Set your brake pads so that they are parallel to the rim. NOT TOED in or out. They should hit flat on the rim. The best way to do this is to pull the lever (with your foot and the bike upside down) while you tighten the nut, Holding on to the pad so it doesn't move.
Softer the pads, the better they will work.
Chrome rims work best for braking.
If you want to spray something on your rims, get some simple green. It is amazing spray a little on your pad and rim, and ride with your finger barely holding the pad against the rim until they start to squeal.
When they squeal they are perfect.
Learning to dial in your brakes is an artform. And all good riders must learn this process some time, why not today? So anyway, here it is! Cassette guide VERSION 2. Made better and hopefully more helpful.
First off, some terms may be new to people, so I’d like to define a few things first:
-Axle: the part that bolts on to the bike and the hub rotates around
-Axle nuts: Hold the hub on to the bike.
-Bearing: the part that has 2 circular pieces that rotate, it presses into the hub shell and the axle goes through it, which allows the axle to spin
-Driver bearing: allows the driver to spin around the axle
-Cone nut: holds the bearings tight which the hub spins around.
-Driver: the part that has teeth and pawls on it, that can be replaced with different teeth amounts to accommodate larger/smaller drive trains (more on these later)
-Flange: the part that extends from the hub shell, and holds the spokes, and keeps the hub centered in the rim.
-Hub: the complete piece that can be installed on a bike, that can be laced to a rim and rotates
-Hub Shell/Shell: The part of the hub that has flanges, and contains all the other parts. This metal piece ONLY
-Pawls: ... read More Submit News, Reviews or Articles 05 Nov 2008 9:37 pm, [How-To] ballsy nankai freecoaster mod This mod will make your nankai freecoaster smoother and stronger. you will need a nankai wrench, a big adjustable wrench for lock nuts, some thick grease and some extra ball bearings. the bearings inside the driver on my 11t are bigger than the bearings inside the shell, so make sure you get the right sizes.
The bearings that come in a Nankai hub look something like this:
we are basically going to eliminate those cages to make room for more bearings to make the hub smoother and stronger.... read More Submit News, Reviews or Articles 21 Oct 2008 6:10 pm, [HowTo] Non-pivotal wedge mod! OK, well the pivotal wedge mod is pretty popular, so I decided this might be too if people knew how to do it.
So...
What you need
Parts
Railed seat
Seatpost (must be the type that comes with most complete bikes where the guts are separable from the post)
1 1/8" headset wedge and bolt
Some form of washer which will fit the bolt or can be adapted to fit it. (I used an old top cap from a headset)
Tools
Hacksaw
File
14mm wrench (open ended)
6mm allen key
Step one
Right, lets start by flipping the seat post guts. When running this sort of seat post normally, the guts are sticking out below the seat and the rails are clamped at the top of the guts. This is ugly! So... Take the post out but leave the guts on the rails. Flip the guts so they are tucked into the seat. They will be a bit harder to access but the seat will be more slammed and the ugly guts will be hidden.
It should look like this:

the problem I had was that the lower headset bearing was left uncovered open to the elements. I know sealed bearings are quite though and grit resistant but with the front wheel flicking up all kinds of stuff I thought id cover it to be safe.
What you will need: go to you local hardware store (I used B&Q) and get a tap washer and assorted rubber o-rings this should only be about £2
this is how my lower headset bearing looked like originally
... read More Submit News, Reviews or Articles 17 Sep 2008 1:55 pm, [Guide] How to replace a sprocket This is for a 2 piece crank but the same concept applies to most other types.
Step 1: Get an allen wrench (or in my case a 9/16 socket) and take out the bolt in the opposite side the crank is on.
Step 2: Pull off the crank
Step 3: Get a big wrench or large vise-grips and take off the nut, it will have a cicular one that just slides off behind it as well.
Step 4: Use a flat-head screw-driver and a hammer while looking down the bike while it is on the seat and bars (AKA, upside down) and put the tip of the driver in the slit on the right side of the circular nut and hold the other crank in between your legs and hammer down and un-screw that bolt.
Step 5: You now have you bearing seal in one hand and the bearings probably in the frame, take them out and pull the other side of the crank out and take the bearings out of that side too so they don't get dirt in em and put em aside.(note the large amounts of grease, if you can clean off all parts the bearings touch including the bearings themselves and apply fresh grease when you reasselmble)
Step 6: Unbolt the nuts and bearing seal and slide off the sprocket.
Step 7: Take the new sprocket and slide it on, making sure that when you tighten the nuts back on that the little knob that sticks out on the crank goes in the little whole on the sprcoket.(make sure that you put nuts and seal back on in the same exact order as when they came off. I usually lay them out in order af assembly on a table to help)
Step 8: Bolt back on the nuts in order on the crankless side and slide on the crank bolting that back on as well making sure that the crank es parallel to the other side.
Step 9( if needed): Most of the time when you change your sprocket size you'll need to shorten/lengthen your chain. To do so get a chain breaker(and a masterlink if one isn't already on) and some spare chain. Put the chain that is already on the bike on like your getting ready to put it back together. If you can't get it back on thatn you need to lengthen the chain, if its too loose than you need to shorten it.
Lengthening: Put the chain-breaker on a link wher the small cylinder is and keep tightenig untill it pops out. Measure the length you need and take the spare chain and put it on. Slide the masterlink parts through and connect the chain together. If it isn't the right length then you may need to repeat measure and put on some more spare chain or take som off.
Shortening: Put the chain on the front and rear sprocket and pull the tire back till it fits where it should with the rear brakes. Take the chain an pull the slack up onto the sprocket until it is tight. The chain part that is hanging over is the stuff you need to remove. Do so and put the masterlink there if there isn't already one. Than pull back the tire till the slack in the chain is zero and see if thats where the tire fits nicely in between the brakes. If not add on/take off some links and repeat.
I noticed there wasn't a section for doing this when I desparately needed it today so after work I decided that the rest of the BMXing community might need it too. Feel free to add anything that I missed out on. Sorry though for not gettin gpictures though, I will next time I either clean the bike again or put another srpocket on.... read More Submit News, Reviews or Articles 09 Sep 2008 10:51 pm, [How-To] Toboggan This trick is a medium level trick. The hardest part of this trick is to really commit to the trick and just throw your hand and ass backApproach a flyout type jump. (best to learn it on flyouts first so you don't completely destroy yourself)As you approach your desired obstacle learn back during the takeoff. As soon as you leave the coping, throw your hand towards your seat and tuck your ass up.Make sure to get the bars as straight as possible otherwise it will just be a seatgrab.Hold the trick for a little so you get used to the balance needed during the trick.Once you perfect the trick on a flyout move towards a hip or a spine.Make sure to be on your game because this trick really hurts if you fall. Also, during the trick make sure to tuck the bike up so you get maximum steez. Now you know toboggans.*Disclaimer:Make sure to know ow to do one handers and seatgrabs before learning this trick. If you get hurt trying this trick, the author ZDN, is in no way responsible.Result:If you follow these steps and perform them right you will look like this. or this thank you come again.... read More more News New Photos Nov-16-2008 Nov-16-2008 Nov-16-2008 More new Photos Recent Forum-Topics Nov-18-2008 Cheap new nike jordan shoes!!!
