Tredz are an established cycle retailer dating back to 1989. Shop with us online, or visit our bicycle shops in Penarth, Cardiff (south Wales) and in Swansea. Everything from Tredz Online is available in the stores. Xterra World Championships Uh, no one else is smiling Ryan! Since he started shopping with us, we've seen Ryan Evans develop from an entry level road rider to someone who's able to compete in the Xterra World Champs in Maui, Hawaii. Incredible stuff. Even better he's more than happy to chat about it. The last time he came in (already thinking about the next challenge), Gus asked him how it went. Ryan took it a step further and provided us with a great write up with photos. Without any more ado... Our Cardiff bike store - hardly a slouch in the stock, staff or size department has been given a face lift. Several weeks of working in a mini-building site and it's emerged looking, well, we'd like to think it's now one of the best looking, best stocked bike shops, period. With massive thanks to Giant, who've helped out every step of the way our store is looking better than ever. Best of all though, our ultra modern open workshop. We're so proud of the job our mechanics do that we wanted to share it with everyone. It's open now and we're desperate to show it off, so come check us out. And don't forget to say hello our grease monkeys! Christmas presents for cyclists There's no two ways about it, buying Christmas presents for Cyclists is a pain. Buy a pair of socks for us and we'll grumble that they aren't waterproof...There. Now we've admitted to it we can point our family and friends towards the direction of our Christmas cycling gift page. Loads of price separated ideas for what to buy the cyclist in your life for Christmas. Chris 'Wow' Hughes, one of our resident bike geeks and out and out Epic fan (he gets some serious miles in on his 2007 model), has pointed me in the direction of the Specialized website and their 'Epic' front page.Aside from the cool flashy visuals - it gives a great idea of how Specialized has moved forward with this bike. Sauser won the worlds on this thing (and Wow never shuts up about it) so it's a great place to start finding out more about it. And to play with the cool flashy visuals... Technical Mountain Bike GloveSealskinz are a perennial favourite here in the office, so when we got the chance to pick up a broader range of their cycling accessories we jumped at the chance. It’s not hyperbole to say that the majority of our mountain biker staff members will be pulling on a pair of Sealskinz mid thermal socks this winter. No doubt the reasonable pricing helps, but their toughness and suitability for the unique (fussy?) requirements of cycling is what does it for us.From Kevlar gloves to Merino liners, below we pick out some of the highlights from the new Sealskinz range… Continue reading "New Sealskinz stuff!" » Tuesday, November 11, 2008 in Cycle accessory reviews | Permalink | Comments (0) | TrackBack (0) Technorati Tags: cycling gloves, sealskinz accessories, sealskinz gloves Test your awareness TfL's new awareness test is easily as good as their moonwalking bear. Specialized Neoprene gloves review 19910_1_Zoom A wetsuit like feel as soon as you slip them on and you should already know what you're getting with the Specialized Neoprene gloves. If you've worn a wetsuit you'll know that this doesn't mean that these foul weather specialist gloves are waterproof. Surprisingly, considering the vast majority of winter cycling gloves are fully waterproof. The Neoprene's acknowledge that you're hands are going to get soaking wet but work at being completely windproof and keeping your hands warm.It really works as well. On long soaking rides, your hands will get wet but they'll never feel uncomfortable or cold - crucially you'll always feel as if you've got complete control. In my bike riding infancy unsuitable gloves have left my hands in agony, before completely numbing them. That just won't happen with these. The only slight downside, is that the wetsuit feel inside is hard to get used to if you're used to traditional cycling gloves. It doesn't take long to get used to the rubbery wetsuity feel though. If my seal of recommendation isn't good enough (and with my pathetic circulation and constantly cold hands, it should be), checkout the peloton next time it hammers down.Recognise those gloves? Beer and cycling! Yup, the Real Ale Wobble is fast approaching. It provides a fantastic opportunity to indulge in two of Wales' greatest leisure pursuits. Even better you get to do in a typically wild and beautiful Welsh landscape as the event takes you into the heart of the Cambrian mountains. The Wobble sees cyclists riding 15, 25 or 35 miles and receiving half pints of real ale at checkpoints. This years event is apparently more closely marked and monitored by event stewards than in previous years. Can't think why. And why not?A great wedge of traffic every morning is ferrying kids backwards and forth from school, in the misguided belief that it's safer.Cycling regularly would pretty much guarantee your child wouldn't become one of the unfortunate generation who are in the grip of an obesity epidemic. The government recommends that young people get an hour of exercise a day. Cycling to school seems like a pretty obvious way to get this. The health of our kids and the environment they grow up in are pretty persuasive factors. For those needing a push, Sustrans, the leading sustainable transport charity have been running the 'bike it' scheme. As well as pushing the obvious benefits its offering cycling advice and sweetners. Like providing free breakfasts for every child that cycles in.If this wasn't enough to get our kids riding, a new cycling superhero is emerging to help kids out when they're in need of bikes and cycling knowledge. Turn to pages 9-10 of the latest edition of Sustrans magazine: The Hub. They call him Gus. Already very well respected in the ultra critical world of full suspension MTBing, the 2009 range has also been turning heads thanks to bike designing legend Dave Weagle joining Turner. In particular he's bringing his DW-link (that'll be WC winning frame technology to you and me) to the fold. Pinkbike.com has got a recent interview with him here. The bikes are due for early November, in the meantime here's where you can go to salivate over Turner bike frames.  Monday, November 03, 2008 | Permalink | Comments (0) | TrackBack (0) Technorati Tags: turner bikes Tredz on Facebook Search for Tredz <b>bikes</b>! One of the many small light sets now on the market designed at keeping the user visible. There isn’t, in all honesty much to choose between most of them. Some are a little bit smaller, brighter, more durable, longer charge life… But they are all pretty similar. Not the innovative Flea. Whilst it is light, bright and smaller than most, it’s real selling point is how it can be charged from any battery. That’s right, if you’ve run out of charge and haven’t got you’re charger with you then you can just bust open your mates TV remote and steal some battery juice.Cool no? Wednesday, October 29, 2008 in Cycle accessory reviews | Permalink | Comments (0) | TrackBack (0) Technorati Tags: blackburn flea, cycling accessory The perfect bicycle Win me! The blog Bicycle Design is running a very cool competition. Design your idea of a perfect commuter bike and you could win one of the best ones around: A Cannondale Bad Boy 700. The design brief:Do you have an idea for a bicycle that might persuade the average person, with no prior interest in cycling, to park the car and pedal to work? That is the main idea behind this competition. The scope is up to you- choose to come up with a whole new form factor for a pedal powered machine, or focus on specific details that you consider key to accomplishing the goal of getting the average non-cyclist to consider riding a bike for transportation. Don’t be constrained by products that are currently on the market, but do make sure that your concepts are based in reality (don’t break the laws of physics, etc) and that they are manufacturable using existing technology. All concepts submitted will be considered, so be creative and have fun. There's already some pretty good commuters out there, the Bad Boy can count itself as one of the best - whilst the Specialized Globe range we touched upon recently might help inspire you.Either way you'll face stiff competition from my glow in the dark drop handlebared, disc braked, 700c tyred, air horn toting, cow catcher running monster. Walking past the workshop earlier on I noticed our head mechanic Steve was working on this...It's the Specialized Stumpjumper Elite 2009, in the Test bike livery. I only got to ride it over to our grassy knoll for a photo op so I am not in a position to say how it compares to the '08 Stumpy, all I can do is wipe away the dribble. It's beautiful. It's very light. I can't wait to ride it properly (if I'm allowed). Steve was literally snarling at me at me as I placed it carefully against the rock, so whoever gets to take it out first better look after it! Couple of things worth mentioning. First, the team time trial is back - obviously this'll give an advantage to the more powerful teams (unlucky Cadel!). Second we finish with a trip to Ventoux. With the removal of time bonuses and no time trial at the end the organisers are obviously hoping that the tour will be kept wide open till the end. Will Armstrong even race, will Sastre defend or will Contador reclaim what he must think is his? Can't wait to find out! Friday, October 24, 2008 in Cycling events | Permalink | Comments (0) | TrackBack (0) Technorati Tags: tour de france 2009 The right clothing... I'm trying to convince a female friend of mine to wear more appropriate cycling clothing. Almost every day she cycles in a normal jacket, jeans, no helmet etc. Every day of bad weather she complains about being cold and damp. She resolutely refuses to wear any of the accessories that I don’t just take for granted but I couldn’t live without. A jacket that isn’t highly visible and waterproof and breathable? Getoutahear! It’s a pretty hot topic at the moment. Should cyclists just be left to their own devices, making it ‘less intimidating’? Or would better, safer clothing make it more likely to keep the new cyclist cycling?Being a liberal sort of bike shop we don’t presume to tell any of our customers how to ride their bikes. Since I’m a fully paid orange jacketed, padded short wearing man, I might not be the most convincing voice anyway. I recently found this article by Zoe Williams revealing some important arguments for kitting yourself out appropriately. Being a woman who cycles I'm hoping she'll have more impact than me just repeating myself. I’ve picked out my favourite quotes below: Continue reading "The right clothing..." » Thursday, October 23, 2008 in Beginners' guides | Permalink | Comments (2) | TrackBack (0) Technorati Tags: beginners guides, cycling clothing, cycling guides DuFFs shoes! DuFFs The alternative world is becoming ever more difficult to tell apart, with mountain bikers dressing like surfers wearing snowboarding hats riding BMXs it's enough to give anyone brain freeze. Check out our new range of DuFFs shoes and the awesome range of colours, then go read the DuFFs blog to see what the cooler end of the cycling fraternity are up to (hint: not triathlons). Their 2009 models are taking a big step forward. We've had details of what's changed for a while, but since Spesh reiterated it at the London Bike Show recently we though it worth pointing out the changes. Here's the blurb:With environmental and wellness concerns and soaring fuel prices, there most certainly are clear problems. And, as we know, bikes are the solution! Following on their success with the Innovate-or- Die contest, Specialized have innovated with a totally redesigned GLOBE offering, focused at getting people out of cars and onto bikes. Its category-leading, light weight, ergonomic touch points, dialled in geometry and flat resistant tyres perfect are perfect for utilitarian riding. The Globe is an exclusive line available only to Specialized dealers. That's Specialized dealers like us! They also sent us more info explaining the differences between the Globe's of last year and the 2009 Globe models...
