Joe Nygra has Passed
Good morning.Just heard from the family that
JOE NYGRA
passed away yesterday, May16, in Portage, Indiana. He was 97. Joe was one of the original rollers at the first race in Chicago onAugust 13, 1935, partnered with Clara Scholl. Within a year, Joe waspartnered with Gene Vizena, who he would marry on December 14, 1937 inSt. Louis. Known as the 'Italian Stallion' and 'Jumping Jack onWheels,' Joe was born in Potenza, Italy on February 25, 1910 andarrived in America when he was four. Joe and Gene Vizena were theoriginal 'red shirts' stars of the Transcontinental Roller Derby. They were both inducted into the National Roller Derby Hall of Fame atceremonies in Chicago on August 13, 2005 commemorating the 70thanniversary of the first race. Joe is survived by a large, lovingfamily and will always be remembered and loved by those who loveRoller Derby. His hometown was Portage, Indiana, on the tip of Lake Michigan (about 35 miles outside of Chicago). His parents were the original villains in the Roller Derby and had many adoring fans. They had traveled the world. They had a mountain of articles written about them, now safely tucked away in the loft above the garage. Joel craved this kind of attention and fame for himself.
